Subject: Your avatar and you..a discussion
Hey, all! I tried changing my avatar today, and it only lasted a few minutes..I just had to bring back my Mr. Cool.
Thus generates a question:
Why do we become so attached to our avatars, and feel disloyal if we change them? Not everyone feels this way, I am sure, but for those of us who do this begs answering.
Please feel free to post an explanation, and perhaps we can all earn a PhD in Avatar Attachment.
:) Shazzaah

I usually change mine every few weeks, unless I find one I really like, then there's no need to change it. There are some people here I have never seen change their avatar!! :o (goldie, FBVP, etc)
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
Well, here's my avatar plan until January 1:
Until December 18: Marshall football helmet. The Thundering Herd will be playing in the GMAC Bowl on that date.
December 19-25: The Christmas tree currently residing in my sig line.
December 26-28: West Virginia University football helmet. The Mountaineers will be playing in the Continental Tire Bowl on December 28.
December 29-January 1: A New Year's avatar.
After January 1, who knows?
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
My avatar and the stuff I write under it change with my mood. In other words, I change it every day or so.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I usually try to have an avatar that both invokes my personality, and reflects my mood.
I started out with "Cutter John" from Bloom County. What it meant to me was that even though I cannot do some things, there's a whole lot else I *can* do.
Then I switched to "Grrr" the stupid robot helper from the Invader Zim cartoon. Pure silliness, hiding real, useful knowledge. That went away only because the host site folded.
For a short time I used "Icky Vicky the babysitter from h**l" from the cartoon Fairly Oddparents. But I found I cannot be that mean all the time.
For a few days just before Halloween, I used images from the comic version of Death. Neil Gaiman made her seem really cool and not scary at all. Then just as you were fully relaxed, BAM!! Spooky stuff, and I got scared good and proper.
Now, in keeping with the penguin theme of the 'boards, I'm using a dancing penguin, and using penguin related quotes under my avatar and in my sig line. Just until I find something that really sings to me.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
Well, since I been on the board, I've developed this little fixation for cones and jarts. And crowbars and axes in the head.... ;) Personally I am fondest of my jart, but I brought back my cone upon request. :)

Guess. ;)
Kat knows for sure :)
Syncronos probably knows too 8)
Jessica has an inkling ::)
And I know Shazzaah knows too :D
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
Had any of you seen me pre-crash (which was only about one or two weeks) you would have seen the generic Fred Flintstone avatar.....
My daughter drew the Lucy avatar from sight and obviously it matches the username.
A number of boardies have specifically requested I don't change it, so....there it is.
At one stage I had her lined up to create a number of different peanuts characters, so I could change them every day, but teenager-hood struck early, with it's associated hormonal mood-swings and dark moods and laziness, and therefore the drawings went out the window..... :(
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I've gone with Pearl Jam album covers since they're my favorite band, its kinda easier to stay with a theme.
Truth is while I appreciate there music and ethics there isn't much else that identifies them with me, other than the Seattle roots.
I could post a lot of different ones up to help represent me, just don't want to work that hard at it.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I am a die-hard Cubs fan. Lester was kind enough to find the avatar for me so here it is. I started out with John Taylor. Then I found a cute froggie that went away when the site got rid of it. Then I found another froggie but the Cubbies won out.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I guess my avatars are pretty self evident. Not morbid, but celebratory.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
Avatar? What's that? :D Oh, you mean like from Ultima IV-IX? Hmmm, I pretty much used the same character name throughout the series (same class too when available).
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
This is the third return of the cat spinning on a turntable. I've gotten quite a few compliments on it. I change my avatar when the mood strikes me.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
My avatar & sig lines are usually graced with Duran Duran, Coca-Cola and (more recently) Harry Potter. These are some of my favorite things. :D
I do change them temporarily for Holidays. :)
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
My avatar has never changed and it's the same one I use on the robotics forum I belong to and was created due to a challange on a photography forum where we were supposed to post a picture of our true "selves". It was my first attempt using the cloning tool in PaintShop Pro, I've been considering redoing it now that I have learned how to do layers.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
Other than holiday avatars, mine is always a picture from Hawai'i. The placed I'd always rather be.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I may shock everyone one day and get one. ;)

LOL Cat! Maybe it is best not to get one...you become so attached, and I named mine, that is the clincher. I just don't see me losing the blue cool one anytime soon. He has grown on me and I would feel guilty leaving him behind....silly I know. :)
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
All I know is when I joined back in late January, I was hesitant to change my avatar because I figured everyone stayed the same. I started a topic and "Announced" my intention to change maybe once a week. Well, since then everyone seems to have jumped on the bandwagon! I think it's a great way to express ourselves... after all, variety is the spice of life.

Me too. I also always use a picture of a band or a single/album cover with lyrics underneath it. Only beacuse my music is very, no, quite, nooo, 'extremely' important to me :]
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I think my first one was an album cover, but I don't remember which one. Before long I switched to Bill the Cat of Bloom County fame, and I used that one until a couple of months ago. I have changed a few times since then, and probably will again before long. Just as the mood strikes!

I've had two avatars since I joined the board last January. The one I use now was picked out for me by a very special person and I don't intend to change it! Besides that, it's looks an awful lot like I do!! ;D

I have a fondness for the Tigger personality which is uncomplicated, transparent and ever hopeful. A die hard optimist.
SteveH found me this animated version. Doing his thing in a confined space makes him look a little odd but it seems somehow appropriate for me anyway! ;D
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
The only time I changed my avatar was for the 9/11 remembrance.....that day only.....other than that it's always been what it is.....which is what was to have been the album cover for "Sex Sells" by Bon Jovi......which became "Crush"....it's a symbol that is near and dear to the Jovi faithful and I have it tattooed on my arm as well..
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I just liked the little grey dog, simple as that and I'm too lazy to change him !
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
My avatar has been pretty constant, it obviously goes with my username and it has a nice hypnotic effect. (It looks better in the correct resolution)
I have occasionally changed my avatar to reflect world events but I usually can't be bothered ;)

I originally had a Debbie Gibson '88 avator then a Sally Field (circa "Gidget") avator.
Then on a thread I posted, Race Bannon posted me an avator that I decided to keep. :D
I actually like this avator.
It's pretty groovy. 8)
I also have another avator of Debbie Gibson that goes with my sig.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
mine came about on the day I first found this site and was filling out the registration.
"EGAD I need a name" I thought. Hmmmmm lets be the Girl attached to the boy I liked most in the 80's. Then I had to pull out my HUGE box of Uncanny Xmen junk (oops stuff) and found the corniest pic of Brian that I could.
I spose if I was inclined I could scan a whole bunch of seriously corny Brian pics and change them regularly !!
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
Well, once again....I am pushing the envelope. I guess my mood swings might have something to do with it ;)
Modified to add: If you are curious & want to see where I got that avatar from....it's not for the kiddies on the board! (hmmm...imagine that) ::)
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
Well, Homer Simpson is my idol.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I first started out with Garfield, then I switch to those "alluring eyes." There were a few people who also used those "alluring eyes" and I really have to be unique. Once I learned how to create something that was different, it had to go with my name. Who better than Julie Newmar-the orginal Catwoman. Since putting her up there, I find that I have been identifing with her. I have had a few people tell me that I look like her (which is a great complement). She is now my lastest inspiration. Thanks, Julie-wherever you are.

Like Bobo, I'm a Homer fan: I started off with the Homer avatar; had a brief fling with Dilbert (as it's kind of apposite given my job)... but once I'd got the punch-line of my all-time favourite cartoon scanned in, I'm afraid it had to change :-)
Whether it'll change again, who knows?

Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
Well, I've had a lot of avatars…
My current theme is using scantily-clad women in swimwear and calling it "Babe of the Day." I've had other avatars…
When the rankings were based on "Calvin & Hobbes," I found a picture of Calvin being flushed down the toilet and used that. (I wanted a box of "Sugar Covered Chocolate Bombs" to be the avatar, but couldn't find one.) When Chuck switched to penguins, I wanted to use a picture of Burgess Meredith as Batman's nemesis "The Penguin" but couldn't find one, so I went with Tennessee Tuxedo. I've also used WVU and Marshall emblems. I'm thinking of getting rid of the "Babe of the Day" feature. (During the Iraq situation, I found a picture of a woman in a star-spangled swimsuit holding a flag on a site that has links to adult content.) I've used album covers as avatars, especially during last May. I don't know what I'm going to do next once I run out of babes, and that won't be long…
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
Mine reflect my username. I am fanatical about ceramics, and in recent months have been displaying pics of my work in my avatar. As you can probably tell, I am crazy about making mugs. The one that's up now (cream-colored mug) will probably stay for a while, as it's a favorite piece. :D
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I have an album cover as mine, which I change every Sunday evening. I use a bit of a song from that album as part of my signature line. But I don't think I'm going to change my avatar for awhile. Maybe this summer again I'll do some sort of theme (like last summer I did an album of the day) but right now I'm sticking to album covers.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
i change mine whenever the mood strikes. it's been an album cover two or three times, a fish i drew once, and now it's greg camp of smash mouth. i'm considering doing a series of random guys from bands i listen to, mainly because i can. the quote under it changes as often as my mood...right now, it's "whoa there, fritz!!" which is a really long inside joke i won't explain. ;) :D
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
My avatar is pretty simple.I love the jammin oldies.I'll keep this one.

Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
First I had Bart Simpson, Then I had a Yugo, Then I had Hobbes from Calvin and Hobbes, Then a weird, red creature, and then back to Bart.
BART SIMPSON ROCKS!!!!!

Oh, yeah! I forgot about the Apple Macintosh.
I'm thinking of getting a new avatar. I think i'm going to get one right now.

I was considering changing mine to the Canucks logo until they were either knocked out of the playoffs or won the Stanley Cup but have decided against it. This is who I am. People see this and think "that's a post from Jonman" so I'm not gonna change it just for a hockey team...
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I've always tried to live by the KISS credo (Keep It Simple Stupid) so, except for the first couple of weeks with Homer Simpson, this has been mine..........and I'm a musician who "cut my teeth" on southern rock and a trucker whose CB handle is "Free Bird" so what better "bird" to use in this forum than little Linux?
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I think mine speaks for itself. Che was a true revolutionary, always questioning authority, always willing to look for new ways. And my latest addition, Emiliano Zapata (did you get it POP?), also had a great vision for a better world. I was born a revolutionary, and will die that way. Viva la revolucion ;D
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I've got Sum 41. Very deep. I have it because they are my alltime favorite band, and I would feel lonley without them beside all my posts :-/. (ShellyGal knows what I mean ;D)

Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I've gone through sooo many! I began with Van Gogh's "Starry Night," then went on to use Wassily Kandisky's "Contrast Of Sounds," and then I found a Duchamp one which totally ruled. I also used a gargoyle a la Brassai as well as Brassai's famous photograph of Pont Neuf at night. I also used David Sylvian and Blaine Reininger (but more often, David Sylvian 'cause he rulz!). I've also used a still of little Doinell from The 400 Blows quite a few times; I really liked that one. I used Front 242's Tyranny ===>For You<=== cover as well as Death In June's hand-with-whip logo.
I liked the Madonna one I had, but I like the cover for Naked Eyes the best. I love "Promises, Promises" a lot too, so that helps :)
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
My avatar (Mr. Horsepower) is the company logo for Clay Smith Engineering, Inc. known for high performance cam shafts.
In an effort to individualize my gear, the odd little "angry thrush" icon has graced the side of head gear (navy flight deck cranial, bump-cap at General Mills, hard hat at Valero Refining) I've worn at different jobs since the early-90s (usually handpainted, but now a decal). Continuity from one place/job to another has always been this simple logo. I've been described by those who know me as high-strung, hyperactive, angry, opinionated, mean and an a**hole (gotta love candor! ;D) I tend to think that's the reason this icon caught my eye.
This is actually my second avatar, my first being an animated California state flag. I borrowed the idea of a state flag avatar from member "TX" after seeing his animated Lone Star avatar. I have no plans of changing my current one, although recently I'd tossed around the idea of changing it to a heraldric "lion rampant' icon to reflect my interest in ancient European history.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
I'm really loyal to my avatar, Deryck from Sum41... I just can't stand to change it, because I'm so used to having his rocking-out silhouette by my posts. I'm so deep. Yeehaw.
Subject: Re: Your avatar and you..a discussion
Well, I joined this site just a few minutes ago. :) I don't see myself changing my avatar in a while, though. I love the album in my avatar (Strange Times by the Chameleons) and I like the cover design a lot too. Delightfully bizarre and unusual, just like my posts will hopefully be. ;)
