Subject: Musicals

Written By: CatwomanofV on 12/15/02 at 07:57 p.m.

Who likes musicals (that is willing to admit it) and what are some of your favorites?  I admit that I love them. Some of my favorites are:
Anything by Andrew Lloyd Webber (Phantom, Evita, Cats, Joseph and the Amazing Techocolor Dreamcoat)
Hair
The Fantastics
Man of LaMancha
Les Mis
I also like Stephen Sondhiem (Company, A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum, A Little Night Music)

That is the short list. I'm sure I can think of some more.

I love musicals. Pretty much anything. The old clasics are my favorites though.  "Clang, clang, clang went the trolley. Ring, ring, ring went the bell...." Stop me 'cuz I'll just keep going. ;D

Glad I am not the only one.

Oklahoma
7 Brides for 7 Brothers
Guys N Dolls
Cats
Les Mis

just to name a few. I would really like to see Mamma Mia, the Abba inspired one that is pretty new.

I have seen Cats, Rent and The King and I.  I thought they were great.  My only problem was with The King and I.  Haley Mills was supposed to star in it, but she was sick and we had to have the understudy. :-/

I used to go all the time beacuse my mom is kinda obsessed with them! My favs would have to be 'Grease' (seen twice) 'Blood Brother's (seen twice) and 'Fame' which I saw in the West End. I've also seen:

Buddy Holly Story (seen twice - beacuse his music was drummed into me when I was little!)
Forbidden Planet
Les Miserables
Aspects Of Love
Miss Saigon
Cats
Guys And Dolls
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat (seen twice - just beacuse Jason Donovan was in it!)
Evita

I'm sure I've seen more, but my brain has gone!

I'm scared of musicals! I think the only one I actually like is "Little Shop of Horrors"

Many times my big sis has forced me to watch stuff like My Fair Lady, Sweet Charity, and worst of all, West Side Story.  I swear I good feel my brain sizzlin'

In the movie, Steve Martin did that great! In fact, that is the only part of the movie that I really liked.

I will agree.  It hasn't endured for decades and won 10 Academy Awards for its film adaptation if it was the worst :P

OMG I'm an actor.......I freakin' LOVE musicals!! I swear I was born to play Danny Zuko!!  I have seen 3 on Broadway:

How to succeed in business (without even trying) with Matthew Broderick and Megan Mullaly

Damn Yankees with Jerry Lewis

and Beauty and the Beast....

My all-time fave is Paint Your Wagon and I was SO astonished to see it mentioned on this thread twice already!!!

I loved Little Shop as well...the movie is different than that stage play (as most are)....and the song was called (according to my soundtrack CD) "Downtown (down on Skid Row)"....

Ahhh! Queen A.  That's an interesting reaction.  My husband says musicals scare him and I thought he was just being dramatic.  He says people singing dialogue to each other is downright frightening.  I normally sing all my conversations to him for a week after seeing a musical.  I should stop that. :-X

Now, there's nothing wrong with singing.  But I just HATE the way musicals are just like "Oh! I'm cleaning my socks! Lets sing a song about it!"  Ok sure, it may be cute&funny in cartoons, but for real people-especially when they're supposed to be tough gangsters-to just break out into song...thats just gay.

I like classic musicals only.

Phantom of the Opera is excellent but I consider that more operetta.  I hear Les Mis is excellent but I'd call that the same thing.

R&H tops the list of musicals.  My fave story:  King and I.  My fave music:  Carousel.

I love Sound of Music alot too - best combo of story and music in R&H

Others:
My Fair Lady
Show Boat
SINGIN' IN THE RAIN - the supreme musical movie!  (Supreme movie, IMO)
Easter Parade
Meet Me in St Louis
In the Good Old Summertime
(OK, just about anything Judy)
Good News

Geeez I'm having trouble remembering all.....

The local college put on the Rocky Horror Show last year. It was GREAT!!!!!  Even though I don't get to see too many Broadway shows these days, I do try to see the local theatre. Some of it is pretty good. A few months ago, I saw a local production of Joseph and the Amazing Technical Dreamcoat. It was EXCELLENT!!!!!
