Subject: Does Anyone Know When VH1 First Aired, Exactly?

Written By: Hairspray on 12/04/02 at 10:12 p.m.

And to whom we owe the honor of the original hosting duties?

This totally rings a bell...the Rosie part, anyway.

I know Rosie hosted part of it in her early days as a stand-up comic. That was around 1988.

I believe VH1 began earlier than that, though. I just can't seem to remember.

There seems to be no info. on the web about this either.

I did some googleing too and couldn't find when it started, I even went to the corporate pages to see if there was any record there.   I remember it was mid-eighties and it was to start as more of an "adult" music video station kind of a counter to MTV appealing to the kids. Things certainly have changed.

I'm still pretty sure it's 1985, because I remember reading it in the World Almanac a few years back.  If anyone finds any more info, please correct me if I'm wrong though.

Does anyone know when it first turned to crap?

I think it was 1997, thats when shows like "Behind the Music" started, and shows such as "The Big 80's" stopped.

There is not a single thing wrong with "Behind the Music," and a pox on anyone who says otherwise.  My sole ambition in life is to be on "Behind the Music."

There is nothing wrong it, and if you like it great. I just find it repetitive and boring. Everyband has the same story:

1. A troubled youth
2. The hardships they endured before they were famous
3. Their discovery
4. booze, drugs, girls
5. Defining moment
6. Their popularity fades
7. What there doing now

Other things about VH1 that sucks:
1. The ten-minute comercial breaks
2. The video countdown shows that don't play the whole video
3. The lack of videos
4. The one hit wonders countdown where most the artists had more than one hit
5. The "made for VH1" Movies
Face it, VH1 is no longer the music network that "picks up the slack" for MTV. Instead it has become just as bad.

I happen to own a book on the birth of M-tv.. and it covers all the other channels..

CMC, Ted Turner's Music Channel went live on October 26, 1984. By the end of November, they announced it was being shut down (Mtv had conspired to keep the popular videos from being shown on their channel). Mtv agreed to buy the assets of the station.

VH-1 then started operation on January 1st, 1985 playing a clip of "The Star Spangled Banner" by Marvin Gaye. VH-1 veejays were Don Imus, Scott Shannon, Frankie Crocker, and Jon "Bowzer" Bauman of Sha Na Na..

actually.. they stopped showing the awful standup comedy bits around that time, so that's when it improved.. For some reason VH-1 used to show a lot of non-music stuff.. kinda like Mtv.. Rosie O'Donnel used to host the stand up comedy show, which is what everyone is getting confused over. I think that started around 1990 or so.
