No, that makes 3 of us, and it's my favorite holiday (and the most important IMO).  Too many people get too caught up in shopping and other crap to remember what it's really about.  :(

Of course I love Christmas, and there's also Easter.  Unfortunately, Easter has no fixed date, but it falls on the Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox, which means that it can fall anywhere from March 22 to April 25.  If anyone here lives to the year 2018, then Easter will fall on April 25.  However, no one here remembers the last time it fell on March 22, and no one here will be around the next time it does.  The last Easter on March 22 was in 1818 and the next one won't be until 2285.

Oh yes.  Easter commemorates Christ's rising from the dead.

Christmas is my favorite too.

It's a wonderful time for families.  :)

i have to agree with lebeiw15 when she was talking about comercialism , i cant say that christmas is my favorite holiday but i do feel closest with God around that time, i feel that through my spells of depression each year, i  seem to get closer to God as well.

I celebrate Christmas and Easter properly. Okay, how's this for strange. My birthday falls on 21/3, and Easter's earliest date is 22/3 (albeit in 283 years time). My brother's birthday falls on 26/4, which is the day after the latest Easter date, 25/4 (occuring in 1943).

An interesting upshot of the Easter algorithm, is that the Easter dates cycle repeats every 5.7 million years.

The distribution of dates in this period

It's Christmas for me. It's so much fun to have kids at Christmas time.
Bobo, that's a neat chart. The trips birthday is March 31st. Last year their birthday fell on Easter.

So in 2018, Easter Sunday will also be ANZAC Day (Australian and New Zealand national holiday commemorating the arrival of ANZAC troops on the beaches of Gallipoli in WWI where they were promptly slaughtered). I can see there will be considerable conflict of interest on that day.

Dude all that chart stuff is confusing but its cool, and i see now we have someone with a jewish holiday which is cool now we have some variety in this topic

Subject: Re: what is your Religious Holidays

Ya wanted variety, you got it.

We do the "Santa Clause" thing for the kids on Dec. 25, but only because Santa is mostly secular.  There was no Santa in the Bible, and his elves have a Pagan history.

We celebrate the Yule holiday which falls on the Winter Solstice, December 21st.  It commemorates the Great Mother Goddess giving birth to the Sun God.  As he grows older, the days become longer.  (The Solstice is the 'shortest day' or the day that has the least amount of actual daylight.  Each day has incrementally more light to it.)

If we have a fireplace we burn a Yule log that is decorated and consecrated to the forces of good.  It should never go out on it's own, but instead deliberately quenched.  What is left of the log is saved until next year, and used to light next year's Yule log, thereby bringing good luck throughout the year.

People who don't have a fireplace can light a Yule candle instead.  It can be red, green or blue and should be large, since like the log, it is a bad omen if it goes out on its own.  Never blow out a Yule candle, snuff it out with tongs.

Another ritual is going out after the family's feast, and making offerings of bread, cakes and/or wine to the spirits of nature and the trees.  At the end of the ritual we blow horns, yell, or otherwise make a lot of noise to scare away evil influences and wake up the trees to bring Spring faster.

That's actually a Wiccan celebration.  Most people would understand Wiccan as "good" witches, or "white" witches.  There are as many different groups as there are Christian groups.

For example, Christianity has Catholic, Baptist, Episcopalian, Lutheran, Unitarian and other Protestant groups.

Wiccans have the Alexandrian, Gardnerian, Stregherian, Druidic, Eclectic and more.

Instead of Ten Commandments, Wiccans only have one:

"An' It Harm None, Do As Ye Will"

or in plain English: Do NO Harm To Anyone!!!! At All. Ever.  Don't Even Think About It.

Why? Because of the Rule of Three.  Everything you do (Everything, Really!!) will come back to you threefold.

Do a nice thing to someone, and three nice things will happen to you. Do a bad thing, and three bad things will happen to you.

So always do nice things... ;)

Hey Zena, my wife follows Wiccan religion too.  She was a bit uncomfortable when she told me of this early in our relationship but who am I to argue what religion is right or wrong?  What I like is that it is earth based and has a strong matriarcachal history, something the mainstreams have buried. To each there own.
Me, I like the non-commital agnostic stance.  I value christian ethics and morals and think they do a good job of keeping peace and progress when followed, I don't need to put faith or fear a higher god to live within the code.  No offence to those that do. :)

I don't celebrate "religious" holidays, because I'm not religious. I do dress up and get candy on Halloween, and exchange gifts around Christmas/Yule/Hannukah/What-have-you though. It's not a religious experience for me though.

Yule (the equivalent of christmas)
Imbolc (welcoming spring)
The spring equinox
Beltane (welcoming summer)
Midsummer
Lughnasadh (welcoming autumn)
The autumn equinox
and Samhain (the equivalent of Hallowe'en)

It is so nice to see fellow Pagans and Wiccans here. Blessed be. It is interesting to see so many... I was Wiccan back in my early 20s (oh yeah, I did that bonfire dancing), now I'm agnostic, and I go to a Unitarian church (when asked what Unitarians believe, I can only say everything, anything and nothing... you can find Jewish Unitarians, Christian Unitarians, Pagan Unitarians, Humanists, Atheists, Agnostics, Hindu...) because my other is Unitarian (one of the Humanist/Atheist Unitarians).

I don't celebrate any holidays religiously, though I do observe them all.  To me, when I am celebrating Christmas, I am celebrating my family and how much they mean to me.

I know exactly what Unitarians are. My sister is a Unitarian and I have a cousin who is a Unitarian minister. I agree with you about celebrating Christmas. That is basically why I celebrate it too. I was (by the way) baptised and confirmed in the Episcopal Church in my youth but I am a "Born Again, Pagan." lol  One thing I do try to live by "Do what you will, harm none."
