Subject: Any Lord of the Rings experts out there?

Written By: Hair on 11/27/02 at 09:12 p.m.

Question:  In “The Fellowship of the Ring”, Gandolf looses his staff and is banished to the top of the tower.  Then later, he has his staff again.  Will the next movie explain this?  Maybe the book explains it.  Can anyone shed some light on this.

That's an excellent question! I was wondering that myself.

Hopefully someone else will fill us in.

Well, he escaped on the eagle-warrior's back...maybe it was a newly-fashioned staff, or perhaps, as Gandalf the White in the later books, he no longer needed it and it was just for show so was just a generic staff.

I'm sure Philbo could shed some light on this ;)

Ever notice that sometimes they have a packhorse, and sometimes they don't? When they're hiding from the birds under the rocks, no horse. Then, at the gates of Moria, a horse!

And Gandalf can get staves from anywhere.

That's pretty much how I see it: a wizard's staff has no special connotation in Tolkein (even if it does have a knob on the end... no, that's Pratchett ;-)), so Gandalf could quite easily make himself another.

Phil

PS I think the horse (Ned, or something like that) is always there: when they're hiding, he's led out of shot...

The horse's name was Bill. And they don't have time to lead him out of shot. From memory, he's not even there when Merry and Pippin are wrestling with Boromir, or when Frodo stumbles and loses the ring on the mountain ridge (there's an aerial shot of them immediately before that - no horse).

I imagine the film makers weren't paying close attention to the horse.. I know in the book, they buy the horse from a somewhat shady character in Bree, and they have him until they get to Moria, where they have to set him free.. Tolkien spends more time discussing the story around the horse, than some of the scenes that last ten minutes in the movie..

I agree, but that's my point, because the rest of the film is so precise, and Jackson has such an eye for detail. It's just a glaring continuity error.
