Subject: Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass?

Written By: CeramicsFanatic on 11/12/02 at 02:42 p.m.

Which one are you?

I thought about this after I responded to Zella's post regarding what member's voices sound like.  Even if you don't like to sing, please tell us which voice category you would fit into.

I am more comfortable as an alto, although I can sing soprano, too.  My chorus instructor always liked having me in class because he could place me wherever needed...with the altos or with the sopranos! ;D

Karen, you left out the one choice that applies to me....

Tone deaf! ;D

Funny you should ask. I was a Wilson-esque falsetto for months. Still do that stuff regularly.

I honestly have no idea what class I'd be, as I don't know what each is, and I don't sing.  Can't sing.  Won't sing.  Except when I'm alone, and the music's loud enough that I can't hear myself.

There are classes in between these; I just gave the basic list.

Soprano - high female singing voice
Alto - low female singing voice
Tenor - high male singing voice
Bass - low male singing voice

*falsetto is not singing in your natural voice, such as the Bee Gees, The Beach Boys or The Four Seasons...to name a few. :)

I think I can get most of the ranges you have listed (on both sides  :( :o) but as Thundervamp said, that

(a) wouldn't mean I was any good

and

(b) doesn't mean I would want anyone else to hear it.... ;)

It is amazing how much easier it is when you have something to sing along with...

But try it without the music and look out !   :(

As a boy, I was a treble (soprano-equivalent).

Then I graduated to tenor (could reach a top B-flat on a good day).

Haven't sung seriously for about 15 years, though...

Baritone, although I can go bass in a pinch.  The only time I'm able to sing on key is when I'm trying to imitate someone who can sing.  I don't really know why that is.

I've been told that I sound like a midwestern Howard Stern.

I always thought I was an alto but I took voice lessons some years ago and she told me that I was a mezzo-soprano and taught me to sing higher than I thought I could.

Subject: Re: Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Bass?

My old chorus teacher told me I was soprano until during one of the songs she had us singing, everyone became (painfully) aware that I couldn't hit the highest notes.  I was then downgraded to high-alto/low-soprano.

I can do reasonably ok when I'm singing along with the radio or cd, as I tend to avoid trying for notes I know I can't hit.  Instead I'll hum.

Singing acapella, I resemble Lucy Ricardo or Edith Bunker :P :-

Hmmm... my mother was not awake for my birth... but I look too much like my parents for it to have been me taken away.  Maybe the voice just comes with our name....

I guess I shouldn't complain... I've never had my voice mistaken for a boy's before, and once I was offered a job with a 1-900 "adult" number.  But that just doesn't make up for all the people who say "Poor thing, you have a cold."  I've finally stopped trying to convince them differently, I just agree with them now.

I tend to be alto, but I think because I love singing along (and just plain singing) w/male recordings, I've become more tenor!  And soprano has become harder for me, I swear.

I have always had trouble going from chest to head tones (soprano).  Some lower soprano I can handle well but having to switch from alto to soprano notes mid-lyric can mess me up and I sound like I'm cracking!  For me, unfortunately, that's around the A.   :-X

My talking voice is just a tad on the low side - maybe better called "medium"?  As a result, I had voice-cracking when I was an early teen.  Not as much as the avg boy would, but it did happen.

Any other girls w/that trouble?  We NEVER hear about girls cracking voices!  But I bet it does happen - or am I just mutant?    ::)

I actually have two voice categories: Tenor, and Falsetto :P. I don't sing too many falsettos, but I am always caught singing tenor when I'm alone and have a catchy song stuck in my head. I sometimes sing falsettos when I'm listening to Heart or Zeppelin. :P

Definitely soprano! Well, since I can read music and know how to harmonize I could sing alto if I wanted, but my voice is stronger in a higher range.  That's why when I'm in a kinda big choir I like to be a 2nd soprano.  But when I'm doing solos, naturally I like to show off on hitting the high notes.   ;D  You know Mozart's "Queen of the Night" aria from "Magic Flute"?  I can sing that...if I feel like it.   :o   lol

I always wanted to be a first soprano. I hid out in the second soprano section until I was found out-then they put me in the second alto section. Hey, it worked for a while. (I know, I know-going from second soprano to second alto.) I probably could do bass because my voice is so low but I will stay an alto. I learned that altos had more fun.  ;D

Baritone.

Bobo & PF4Eva:  If you like singing falsetto, give barbershop harmony a try.  It's arranged in four parts and the high harmony is sung in falsetto.  For more information, check out www.spebsqsa.org .

A quartet, singing perfectly on key and using correct pronunciation, can generate an overtone an octave above the melody and the odd undertone.  Expanded sound!
