Subject: Why are women...

Written By: Steve_H_2002 on 11/11/02 at 03:28 p.m.

Why are women named after months (April, May, June, July), and sometimes even days of the week (Tuesday Weld, Wednesday Addams), but men never are?

Grumble grumble grumble... okay, let me amend it..

Why are women named after months (April, May, June, July), and sometimes even days of the week (Tuesday Weld, Wednesday Addams), but men seldom are, and in the rare instance when they are so named, it turns out they're either  French or they change their name to Groucho?

What's that got to do with the topic of this thread?

Subject: Re: Why are women...

Back on topic:  methinks the way the months and days of the week are pronounced pre-disposes them towards female-soundingness, if that makes any sense.

On another note, I have to start studying vocabulary, that part of my brain seems to have atrophied.

How about June Jones III, the current Hawaii head football coach? And golfer Don January?

I don't think anyone could change their name to June Jones III, unless his father was named Melissa Ceiderwicz. ;D

Yes, Indy Gent, you are absolutely right about June Jones.  That also reminds me of a classmate I had in junior high school whose first name was June...and yes, he was a guy.  I guess it's not as umcommon as some might think! :D

here is my answer.....WHY does it matter!! ::)

women are named after jewels....Jade, Ruby, Pearl, Crystal...

I think it just has to do with what means beauty to a person.....nothing more than that!

Technically, aren't the days named for, if not men exactly, then male gods? I know friday's not, and wednesday and thursday are, but what about the rest?

Kay, here's months and there's days:

January: named after Janus, the god of doors and gates
February: named after Februalia, a time period when sacrifices were made to atone for sins
March: named after Mars, the god of war
April: from aperire, Latin for “to open” (buds)
May: named after Maia, the goddess of growth of plants
June: from junius, Latin for the goddess Juno
July: named after Julius Caesar in 44 B.C.
August: named after Augustus Caesar in 8 B.C.
September: from septem, Latin for “seven”
October: from octo, Latin for “eight”
November: from novem, Latin for “nine”
December: from decem, Latin for “ten”

Monday- Moon's day
Tuesday- Tiu's day (English/Germanic god of war and the sky)
Wednesday- Woden's day (Chief Anglo-Saxon/Teutonic god)
Thursday- Thor's day (Norse god of thunder)
Friday- Freya's day (Freya (Fria) is the Teutonic goddess of love, beauty, and fecundity (prolific procreation)).
Saturday- Saturn's day (Saturn is the Roman and Italic god of agriculture and the consort of Ops. He is believed to have ruled the earth during an age of happiness and virtue.)
Sunday- Sun's day (duh!)

Here's the version of the weekdays according to those in my 5th and 6th grade classes.
Monday-Marriage Day. Pretending that a boy classmate is married to a girl classmate.
Tuesday-Toes Day. Students stepped on people's toes.
Wednesday-Wedding Day. Where classmates attend a fake wedding.
Thursday-Opposite Day. Where students are free to say the direct opposite of a kind comment.
Friday-Flip-up Day. Where boys flip-up, you know. It was also Flat Tire Day, where boys who wear low top sneakers get their heels stepped on, causing the shoe to dislodge.

How about this, seasonal wife Autumn (OK, year round) has a sister named Shasta (It's a mountain, not a soda!) and Cheyanne.  Shasta has a son named Houston and daugter named Savanna.  Autumn and I have talked about naming our boy (if we have one... and it will be only one) Kenai Mckinley. Kenai is an area in Alaksa, town and Penisula that is an amazing place, great people and beauty. And of course Mckinley is the largest mountain in N America located in Alaska.
My thoughts are that name is about as testoterone laden as possible, I figure facial hair at 10 and Captain of the football team Freshman year, and running the country by 36. ;)
