Subject: Height
Are you happy with your height?
I can understand men being height conscious because of sports and just the idea of big being better, but are woman as height conscious? It seems that women under 5'3" or so think they're too short, which I guess I don't understand.

I'm somewhere between 5'2" and 5'3" and it used to bother me a lot because I wanted to be taller. But somewhere along the line I decided that being short has advantages (no one asks you to pass them things from a high shelf, more places to hide from deranged psychopaths, etc.)

Absolutely NOT! I'm only 5'1 and I have a heck of a time buying pants , jeans, dresses, everything. I'm of average build but I can never seem to find anything that is the right length for me. Usually things that are the right length are often too tight in the waist so I have to go a size up where everything is too long..but seeing I prefer flared pants, hemming them isn't an option so I find myself buying ridiculously high shoes!

I'm 6'2" and happy.
The woman here, just like in real life, seem to be more discontented with their height than the males. Nobody's said they're too tall, though. I've always thought a woman over 6' and a man over 6'5" is too tall. Even at my height, I had to curl up like a fetus in compact cars...
Subject: Re: Height
I'm exactly five feet tall in sock feet if I stand up really straight and think tall thoughts.
I'm happy with my height, but I'm not happy with the way some others perceive height. As someone else mentioned, it makes clothes buying a bit of an annoyance, but for me that annoyance only lasts about three to five minutes per year.
When I was in my early twenties, it would drive me crazy when men taller than 5'11" would not give me the time of day because I was too short for them.
Now, if a guy is that shallow to judge me on my height alone, without getting to know me, he can go jump in a bottomless pit. He don't know what he's missing!!!

I wonder if you could accompany this jumping into a bottomless pit with that sound effect from Super Mario when Mario dies :) That would be fun.
My friends and I sort of had a debate about height once. I personally do not place too much attention on height...I'm 5'8" and have dated girls from 5' to 6'2" and I never thought there was a problem. I think short girls are cute, and tall girls are elegant (because they're so "long" I guess). My friend believes that the "perfect" height for a girl, however, is such that her chin can rest comfortably on his chest when both are standing upright. I guess he follows the so-called hockey-stick rule :) To each their own!

With the possible exceptions of horseracing jockeys and basketball players, I don't believe a person's height is a help or hinderance to employment the way it was years ago.
My dad wanted very badly to be a police officer. He passed all the civil service tests, psychological exams, everything that was thrown at him. When it came time for the physical exam, he was deemed to be in "good overall health", but was rejected anyway. The reason? Back in those days you had to be a minimum of 5'6" to get on the force. Dad was 5' 5 3/4".
This was long before civil rights and political correctness. It may help to explain why there were so few female officers back in the day.

I think that height restriction was a safety measure more than blatant discrimination. It's very easy to disrespect a smaller police officer than someone, say, 5'10"...case in point: Randy Moss and the meter maid. I think in this case, unless your dad was Supercop, a height restriction is justified. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

I remember when you had to be a certain height to be a flight attendant. I forget what the height was, but I think it was changed not too long ago because a friend of mine became a stewardess and she wasn't very tall!
Subject: Re: Height
For the SuperCop theory, it is possible the officer's safety was the main reason. Nowadays, though, at least in my area, it doesn't seem that shorter officers are at any more or less risk than the taller ones.
Sometimes a shorter or female officer (or one who is both short and female), can be less intimidating to a victim of a violent crime.
When my now-ex attacked me and our daughter, the first officer on the scene was a big, burly football player type over six foot tall. I was so frightened at the time I could not make much sense. After not getting much sense out of me, he sent the other officer over to talk to me. He was a much shorter man, and though I was still frightened and upset, I could tell this man exactly what happened partly because I could look him in the eye, instead of having to look up at him.
As for the height requirement for stewardesses, wasn't that part of an artificial beauty ideal?

Someone posted about having a hard time buying small. Well, try buying big!
I am just about "too tall" for most stores, apparently. Consider 1st of all, that there isn't any dept store that has an "Amazon" section (insert whatever PC name you want to use). There is always a "Petite" section. 2nd, there are few places that, mingled in w/"regular" stuff, sell clothes made extra long. (Used to go to Macy's for that, but I think they stopped bothering recently.) Meanwhile, there are "big and/or tall men" places you can go to as a man. But I guess we women aren't supposed to be big. See what I mean? It even makes 1 feel like an alien. ::)
I have the opposite problem of the other poster, but basically the same. I am tall and thin (well, pretty much). Manufacturers seem to assume that the taller you are, the wider you are. Reverse for the shorter - they get skinnier. So, I prefer a 14 length, but like a 10 or 12 on width. Unless I get 1 of those precious few places that sells "Tall" versions of their regular.
So, I frequently end up walking around in designer High Waters and Capri Shirts! :-[
Subject: Re: Height
Perhaps you can start a petition to clothing designers to make clothes for taller women? Or my gay/transgender friends always seem to find a dress in their sizes, and they're not exactly "small" :) You might be able to get advice from them :)

For guys, it is extremely hard to find 29 length pants with a 31 waist (there are 29 lenght and 40 waist though :o ), so inadvertently, I wore baggy/skater/raver pants for a while until I found The Gap :) They have perfect fits.

Ah, I'm sure that's the problem w/most of these mfr's. They seem to assume if you're 1" tall, you're .5" wide, and it goes linearly from there.
Don't we have alot of tall slim people in this country? You'd think for all the tall people there are, they'd provide more Tall clothes off the shelf.
I wonder if the Gap is any good for women. But my sister never mentions them when talking about this. She wants me to catalog-buy from Eddie B. But I don't like to buy stuff w/o trying it 1st - and seeing if it's defective.

This is as shattering to me as that "Describe our posters" thread - I would never have viewed Whitney as shorter than (protege) Mariah.

From the same place that defined Mariah, (A SIZE FOUR!), as "chubby". Reality just can't compete.

I guess I'm happy with my height-5' 6''. I wouldn't mind a couple more inches in the leg department. And for the clothes buying issue-it bites! I may be average in height but I have the waist of a 12 year old. Nothing fits. >:(

I was at a Physio once and she said to me :
"You have a nice long back"
and just as I was thinking to myself...
"I'll come back here again, then"
she added
"And short legs"
There you have it :(
Subject: Re: Height
I'm a simple 5'10. Nothing too tall, nothing too short. Now, if I could just do something about this damn ski slope nose...

Me neither! Clothes makers think just because I'm short that I should maintain a 23 inch waist all my life. I'm only a size 6 in US size, which is a 10 in the UK (i think) yet I still feel like I'm 'supposed' to be smaller.
Subject: Re: Height
I've heard that the average womans' size in the US is a 10. I can affirmatively say that a 6 is not bad by any means. Honestly, I don't even like Mariah but she she shouldn't be called a chubb.

I would have to say that having the waist of a 12-year-old girl really looks great on a woman who has borne triplets!

I KNEW I forgot an important one!
Terry Farrell (6')...really hot Trill girl from Star Trek DS9 and Becker :)
Jeri Ryan (5'8")...really hot Borg girl from Star Trek Voyager and Boston Public :)
see? you can be tall and be beautiful too...and these women have aged exceptionally well, in my humble opinion :)
later I think I'll post a "short women I think are beautiful" summary :)
Subject: Re: Height
Personally, I like the short women. I'l 6 foot 6, and it'd be kinda akward if the woman is the same height as you...can you imagine me sweeping a 6 foot tall woman off her feet? We'd be knocking stuff over all day long. My wife is 5 foot 2...and I love it. We fit just right
And, pardon my post. There's nothing wrong with chubby...be who you are. But...come on, y'all...Mariah did kinda hit the Hostess aisle a little hard...

I personally don't mind the girl's height at all :) unless, of course, she's 8 feet tall...in which case I'd be slightly intimidated.

Mariah's pretty much gone to hell since Derek Jeter dumped her. "Glitter" didn't help much either.
I could suggest a few Asian girls that I think are beautiful...like Lucy Liu and Lauren Tom, both of whom are around 5'3" :)

I am 5'2" soaking wet. I think I am the right hieght. I am very happy with it. I always say that the best gifts come in small packages. (lol) My honey, on the other hand is 6 ft. I know, what a difference but he gets stuff for me on the top shelf.

I'm 5' 3" tall, and although it used to bother me it really doesn't anymore. My husband is 5'6", and I like him just the way he is. My sister is 5'7" and she says she likes the shorter guys. Shorter the better....but she is really mysterious as to why..... ;) :) :) ;) Also, I think it would be wonderful to be a tall woman, to look elegant....one of my very dear friends is 5' 11" and she never looks awkward, I think it is all in the way she carries herself, like a Queen. She always look lovely and commands attention when she walks into the room, and she is not short of dates. Thank goodness we're all different. It would be a boring world if we weren't.
Subject: Re: Height
i think for women it's not really how tall or short we are...it's how we're proportioned. i'm 5'5" which is fine with me but i'm ALL legs and short torso. it's very frustrating trying to buy clothes...lol.

I guess this would be a fun time to bring back the thread :)
I was reading about the Golden State Warriors' 5'5" reserve point guard, Earl Boykins. He is like Muggsy Bogues on meth, this kid plays incredible defense and has an offensive attitude (in that he scores points, not that he's a butt). So it doesn't matter what size you are, it matters what you've got inside you ;)
Thought I'd share.
