Subject: originals and covers - which do you prefer?

Written By: the_OlLine_Rebel on 11/08/02 at 02:37 p.m.

Sometimes I think about this, esp. how some have mentioned '90s/recent covers of '80s songs, etc.

I could think of more, but e.g., I like Phil Collins' "Groovy Kind of Love" better than the original '60s version.  Much better so that I'll turn off the station w/the original, while glued to the '80s 1.

Another example - "Unchained Melody" - this is something done several times w/in the time Righteous Brothers did it.  I haven't gotten to hear the earlier versions enough, but I admit I think I like RB's best.

Usually, though, I like the older versions better.  Covers seemed to happen alot through the years when rock was very young.

I have a Bobby Vinton record w/his big hits as well as some covers.  That's another example.  I don't like his as much as the 1s from the '50s that I know.  Like "Special Angel" or "Over the Mountain".

Do you have some songs that you can compare?  Even if you like them (hate them) equally?

Generally I like the original (think American Pie).  But sometimes the cover is better.  I agree with you, Rebel, Groovy Kind Of Love is better with Phil Collins.

I like mostly originals, especially 60, 70's and 80's music originals.

Except -

One re-make/cover that comes to mind is "Red, Red Wine" by UB40. I liked that one, whereas I disliked the original by Neil Diamond.

I think out of all the songs in the world, the two songs I prefer the remakes over the originals are "You Better Run," of which I like Pat Benatar's version over the original by the Young Rascals; and "When Will I Be Loved," of which I like Linda Ronstadt's version over the Everly Brothers (OK, Bobo, the Everly's version isn't really all that bad!).  But the worst remake of all, in my opinion, has to be Reba McEntire's mangling of the Everly Brothers' "Cathy's Clown"!

Well, I usually prefer originals. Roger Daltry destroyed Andy Pratt's "Avenging Annie" (changed it from 1st person to 2nd person, which ruined the charm of it), and Duran Duran (sorry Hairspray) slowed down Cockney Rebel's "Make Me Smile" to turntable dragging speed... :P

However, the Psychedelic Furs' version of Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife" altho' quite different, was excellent.

I find I tend to focus on the version I heard first.....

A couple of notable exceptions for me are two Beatles songs (bear in mind I am a big Beatles fan).....

Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds - I quite like Elton John's version

Eleanor Rigby - by the Zoot - if you have never heard it give it a go !

It's "a bit different".....

LOL - you know what?  Since I brought this up I'm having more trouble thinking of older versions I like better than newer!

Here's a somewhat neutral 1 - that "Mony Mony" song.  Given I like Billy Idol's style, I think his version gets a slight edge over the original, more ponderous, in the '60s.  But, I don't like it that much - it's my least favorite Idol hit.

Another rather stark difference - "Lean on Me".  The original '60s to me is very ponderous and slow, basically depressing on a subject we'd hope isn't so depressing.  I LOVE the '80s hip-hop version, but sadly I haven't heard it in ages.  It's much more fun and I think more appropriate to the subject.

The 80's version of "Lean On Me" by Club Nuveau is excellent!

That's another I like better than the original.

Me, too.  Usually I end up liking the first one I hear better, because it's the one I'm most familiar with by the time I hear the other version.

In most cases, I hear the original first, but a notable exception is Aerosmith's cover of "Cry Me A River".  I love that version, but I've never cared for the original.

Depends on the artist and the song. Sometimes it can turn out great (ie Stevie Ray Vaughn doing Hendrix' "Voodoo Child), and sometimes its laughable (ie Madonna butchering "American Pie")

And that song/artist just HAS to win the prize for being complained about in the most amount of differing threads on this board at one time or another.... :D

Songs I like Equally -
I think that for Tainted Love - I like Gloria Jones and Soft Cell's versions equally, whereas Marylin Manson, well just got even get me started!

Supremes/Kim Wilde - Keep Me Hanging on (maybe I prefer 'slightly' Kim's version)

Duran Duran/Aurora - Ordinary World (Natalie Colman has such a 'sweet' voice, maybe thats why)

Covers I like Better -
I like Alien Ant Farms version of 'Smooth Criminal' better than MJ'S original. Same goes for Wheatus - A Little respect, never got into the Erasure one (although think the video is interesting :)).

I also like the Club Nouveau verion of 'Lean On Me' more, and the Boys Town Gang version of 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You'.

Letters To Cleo remakes of 'I Want You To Want Me' (Cheap Trick) and 'Cruel To Be Kind' (Nick Lowe) I like more than the originals.

I Don't Want to Talk About it (Everything but the Girl) and Handbags and Gladrags (Stereophonics) are much much much better than the Rod Stewart originals - cause I just don't like his voice!

Hazy Shade Of Winter - The Bangles ( big improvement I think, even though Simon and Garfunkel are fanatstic)

And the last one that I can think of is: Save Ferris - Come on Eileen - 99% improvment on DMR's!! Sorry everyone!

And I seriously wont even go into the amount of covers I hate. Lets just say *coughs* Atomic Kitten. :)

The best and worst cover...IMO, is of the same song. I like the Nilsson version of "Without you" best (Originally written & recorded by Badfinger) and the worst version is the pariah carey version :P

As for "Groovy Kind Of Love" I always liked the Mindbenders version...since I grew up with it...so many memories!

For the most part I would have to say I always like the original better....with very few exeptions

criz: I believe the original "Hazy Shade Of Winter" was done by the Hollies....not Simon & Garfunkel??  but just so you know, I like the Bangles version better ;)

Actually, it was originally done by Simon & Garfunkel and can be found on their "Bookends" album.  It was written by Paul Simon, who, of course, wrote all their songs.
