Subject: symbolism:

I just thought I'd bring this topic up.Did you ever want something because somebody else has one or owns one and you wanted to feel like the"in crowd"? Well for me,the reason I wanted a cell phone was because I felt before was"lost"without something. Now,it's like cell phones, walkmans and CD players are somewhat now of a"craze starter".One person has one,the other person wants to go out and get one to be like the others in the crowd. That's how I felt before I got a cell phone. Now,phones, walkmans and CD players are everywhere you look.just imagine the crazes years ago when you wanted to be like Madonna or Michael Jackson, wore an afro, wear baggy pants like Kriss Kross,etc.....How do you feel about symbolism? -howard- ;D

Sorry Howard

My original reply got off your subject a bit...

How do I feel about symbolism ?

I get annoyed with it - especially when for example people jump on a cause because it is popular - and they don't know the first thing about it - but they know all the 'right words' to say....

I used to work in the high-end clothing industry.  One thing that stuck out was how much the Japanese people have to have the latest designer clothing (you know the ones with their name plastered all over it...i.e. Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, etc.).  They were just so "status-conscious" (I think more so than other countries)!  I could never understand why that seemed so important to them!

If I get something, it's not because all of my neighbors have it but rather because it's something that I personally want.  I don't feel like I have to keep up with all the current trends.

I used to intentionally avoid all trendy things, but that's almost as bad as jumping on the bandwagon.  Now it's a matter of if I like it, I don't care if it's popular or not.

I am confident in the fact that following fashion trends would only make me look worse.

I've been burned before, wasting money on trendy things, that were just about out of style by the time I've saved enough to get one.

For example, back in the very early 80's knickers were all  the rage in my town.  For those that have never seen them, they were close-fitting trousers that ended at the knee.  One week after I finally got a pair, nobody in their right minds would be caught dead wearing them.

These days, I tend to buy a cheap copy of designer clothes.  That way something that is out of style in a few months has not cost me half a year's clothing budget.

For electronic "toys", I wait until they become almost a necessity.  I have a computer now, but I don't have a cell phone.  As long as I can still find a pay phone out in the street, I figure I don't need one.

I wanted games, but not because other people had them, just because I wanted to play them. To that point, once I got my commodore, I didn't care if I had a nintendo or not.

Cell Phones to me,seem like a "need" because everyone has it now. It's like a monkey see, monkey do type of craze. When I'm on my cell phone,I would always see another person on the block checking their phone or just wanting to use it.You know why? Cause they have nothing else to fiddle around with. It's simple. They just want to keep busy like me.either I can listen to my walkman or just use my cell phone to call someone. -howard- :)

Considering the hectic pace of life today and the fact that cell phones come with free long distance, it's a wonder more people don't carry them...in fact, as soon as I receive my paycheck I'm going to invest in a snazzy phone...I want a flippy phone, like a Star Trek communicator :)

you need one of those phones where you can say "Mom" and it calls your mother...and if it flips, you can do the dramatic opening motion Captain Kirk used and say "Kirk to Enterprise!" and it'll call, uh...your veterinarian?
