Subject: E-Mails
Anyone else notice a big drop in junk e-mails? I was tossing out about 60 e-mails a day on my hotmail account; now it's about ten. Same with Yahoo. Did something happen, or is it just happening to me?
Subject: Re: E-Mails
Not just you. I've not been able to access my account for a few weeks. When I did access my account, there were so few more e-mails in my inbox it wasn't worth shouting about. Mind you, people are selling your e-mail address to more companies than ever before right now.
Subject: Re: E-Mails
Dunno about Hotmail, but Yahoo has recently updated and upgraded their mail services. Almost all bulk-mailed messages are re-routed into a new folder called naturally "bulk-mail".
For any junk mail that ends up in your inbox inadvertantly, there is a link called "this is spam" for you to click on to report it. I do every time, and whatever it is they are doing about it, it seems to be working. I'm only getting 1 piece of spam in my inbox per week, down from 20-30.
There is also a "This is NOT spam" link in the bulk-mail folder for newsletters and stuff you subscribe to on purpose.
Subject: Re: E-Mails
Hotmail has the same thing, Xena. I've never used it on hotmail or yahoo, but the spam volume has plummeted anyway. Mind you, I'm not complaining. It's a dramatic decrease in junk mail, and a little perplexing....
Subject: Re: E-Mails
I thought I was the only one. My hotmail account has gone from about 50 junk mail a day to hardly any at all - but I'm not complaining.

I think I am getting all your extra junk mail. I went from about 60 to over 100 a day. It drives me up a wall. >:(
Subject: Re: E-Mails
Hotmail a few weeks ago sent me about 50 or 60 junk mails a day, and it was annoying as heck. Now I get like 10. It's still annoying, because even though they go to the junk mail filter, it still clogs upi your space. And I'm NOT going to buy extra space just for junk mail.
Subject: Re: E-Mails
Hotmail was sending me tons of junk...I'd delete it and then find 5 messages in my inbox...all the same from member services, suggesting I needed more space. I have Never had that problem with Yahoo so that is my primary e-mail address. There are also lots of others you can use. I found one at beer.com and used to have a link to hundreds more.
Subject: Re: E-Mails
That deal where Yahoo pputs your "bulk mail" in a seperate folder was the best idea in a while. I love not having to weed out the junk from the "real" messages.Just go to the bulk mail folder, check the boxes on about 20 of 'em, hit delete, and voila! ;)
Subject: Re: E-Mails
I've been routing all my e-mail to Yahoo lately, I have not received ONE junk mail in the 3 months I've had it. I have noticed the drop in junk mail in Hotmail too, but in recent days the average # of spams has been rising gradually...I think they're trying to lull patrons into a false sense of security.
Subject: Re: E-Mails
Yeah the drop happened to my Hotmail account as well.
I think what happened was they watched what spam was coming in over a period of time, then eventually figured out a way to block most of them (hopefully) without being too over-zealous.
I notice lots of spam recently originated from the yahoo and msn domains. Hotmail probably decided to really go through those with a fine-tooth comb...
Subject: Re: E-Mails
In my Go account,I get about close to 80 things from porno to credit cards to free money and just junk. There's really nothing I can do about it.I just let it pile. -howard- :)
Subject: Re: E-Mails
My only problem with my Hotmail address is that it is 99% porn. I have no idea why and especially why there. I have a yahoo address that I use to register on websites, so it isn't from a list...I have an AT&T address that I give out to close friends and relatives. I check my hotmail once a month or so and it is all porn. It drives me up a wall >:(
Subject: Re: E-Mails
I have a Hotmail account that I use primarily for my fantasy football sim league. In the past week alone I have gotten ninety-five pieces of junk email. ::) My yahoo account doesn't get hit that hard in an entire month.
Subject: Re: E-Mails
I started yahoo and hotmail accounts at about the same time, the hotmail has always gotten way more junk and smam. Yahoo is the way to go.
Subject: Re: E-Mails
I have a hotmail account and it's always worked efficiently in the filtering of junk mail.
I don't get much junk mail anyway.
The reason many people get a lot of junk mail is because they give out their e-mail address in way too many places.
People register in too many sites not reading the fine print, subscribe to newsletters making the same mistake - not reading the fine print and not using the opt-out options in any of those sites (even if they have that option available).
The best way to avoid junk mail is to give out your e-mail address only when absolutely necessary and keep your extracurricular activity website memberships and newsletters to a minimum. ;)
*I must note that this site is truly awesome in every respect and people don't get bothered by the annoyances too easily found in other websites/forums - namely junkmail. :)

That's why I keep two e-mail accounts. My Yahoo one is the one I use for anyplace I need to provide an e-mail address, including shopping.
My other address (through my ISP) is a closely-guarded secret. Only very close friends and family get that one. I never get any spam at home this way. ;D
(crosses fingers, and hopes the gods of fate don't suddenly decide to smiteth me.)
Subject: Re: E-Mails
All well and good, folks.... but I'm still getting many fewer junk and regular e-mails. It's like somebody put a fine mesh thread over hotmail three weeks ago. Something happened... ???

...and make the cardinal error of replying to junk mail saying "remove me" - I did that just the once, and have had an immense load of junk mail ever since.
My anti-spam now is based around multiple email addresses: my main email address (the one that gets all the spam) is of the form myaddress@domain.co.uk - but anything addressed to x@myaddress.domain.co.uk gets through, i.e. I have a virtually infinite number of email addresses, any one of which can be shut off if overspammed.
I'm intending to follow what an acquaintance as done in using VPOP (a virtual POP3 server), which can return 'valid' "email address doesn't exist" messages to anyone I tell it to, and even better can autorespond with megabyte-sized emails to anyone who doesn't get the message.

I was on the MSN Home site yesterday. Clicked "Take the Pet Compatibility Quiz" button. Surfed a little. Immediately received an unsolicited e-mail from "Pet Prizes". I didn't leave any information while on the site.
Anyone out there chat or IM? I've noticed that if you chat about something out of the ordinary, say mountain biking, chances are you'll get an on-subject unsolicited e-mail about mountain bikes. I don't know why or how that happens.

I could see the possibility of an unsolicited e-mail coming to you after surfing a particular site, even if you don't leave any info. Some places use software that will "capture" your e-mail address. Personally, I think that is immorral, and unscrupulous. I think it might also be illegal, but if it's not, it should be.
Which still doesn't explain why over half of the spam I get is to refinance my mortage (I don't own property, never have, and at this rate probably never will). The majority of the rest is x-rated come-ons to buy herbs or devices that will enlarge and enhance a body part I do not, and never will have. >:(
Explain that?

You too, Xena? Me too, except I get about 10% pre-approved credit cards as well.

Having come back from a couple of days away, ten of the fourteen messages in my inbox were email viruses (bugbear and klez). Am I glad I don't use Outlook.

That's a new one to me, Howard. Are they bulk junk mailings, or are you getting them from individuals?

That's what's termed the 418 Advanced Fee fraud, named after the Nigerian police code, as Nigeria's where the idea originated. Basically they try and get a few thousands (or tens of thousands) up front in return for potential millions. Of course it's a scam, but police reckoned on a 3% return (i.e. 3 people in every hundred were venal and stupid enough to reply to these things) when it was post only; I guess the percentage return would be much lower with bulk emails, but they can send them out in the millions now.
This company advertises in "Computers in Africa", and has sold quite a lot over there, so we get maybe a dozen emails a week.

I get these all the time too, Howard. :(
Philbo's right, it's a total scam. Once they get your bank account numbers, they take all your money out and disappear. The police in several countries are trying to catch them.
Just delete it next time you get one. :)
