Subject: Artists Who "Sample" Often
By "Sample" I mean borrow/copy and slightly alter music and/or lyrics from other artists/past hits (I hope that's still the right terminology, anyway ;) ).
I have noticed that many of Will Smith's hits have familiar music and beats of older hits. The first two that spring to mind are:
"Getting Jiggy With It" - Music Sample from "He's The Greatest Dancer"
"Men In Black" - Music Sample from "Forget Me Nots"
I'm curious to know if other artists have sampled as much.
Input much appreciated! :)

There are a TON of artists who sample these days....it's everywhere.......
But the real reason I wanted to post on here was to say....
Welcome back HAIRSPRAY!!
OMG you've been missed!!!

Subject: Re: Artists Who "Sample" Often
Welcome back, Hairspray! We missed you!
Janet Jackson has sampled Diana Ross & the Supremes' "Someday We'll Be Together" and Sly & the Family Stone's "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" in her songs.

IMHO "Sampling" is just pain Stealing but I would also like to say WELCOME BACK, HAIRSPRAY ;)

Sampling is only stealing in the way that cover songs are stealing.
The ones Tarzanboy didn't know: 2Pac sampled Bruce Hornsby's "The Way It Is" and "True" was sampled by PM Dawn.
Others:
Arrested Development - Everyday People
Jessica Simpson - Jack and Diane
Run-DMC - My Sharona
The Beastie Boys - Superfly, Back in Black
Jay-Z - Hard Knock Life (from the Broadway musical Annie)
Tone Loc - Jamie's Cryin' by Van Halen
Bloodhound Gang - Relax
A Tribe Called Quest - Walk on the Wild Side

This is lies and vile propaganda. Don't listen to him.

And now it's time to play "Guess which one of Tarzan's favorite artists used samples on their last album."
Subject: Re: Artists Who "Sample" Often
Crap, I completely missed the "usually" part. Now I feel stupid.
/mod But Eminem still makes a billion times better music than Radiohead.

If that's so true, then WHY do people feel the need to Steal...oh, excuse me....Sample ::) Guess they aren't secure enough with thier own talent standing on it's own? ;)

*sigh*
I won't deny that sampling, at itsworst, can be just about the laziest practice in the history of music. You can also get interesting and dense collages of music, such as the kind you get from The Bomb Squad, Beck and Moby (I'm pretending that I like Moby for this argument). But even in the cases where a song blatantly bears the mark of some different song, you can still have some good work come from it. Rap is judged differently from other music; the emphasis is on the lyrics and flow first and production second. I liked the Tupac song.

First of all, let me say Thank You! to everyone who's welcomed me back and for being so thoughtful. I missed this place and missed you guys and gals. It's sure nice to be back.
Definitely looking forward to a great Fall season folks! ;D
Back on topic-
I've continually noticed "sampling" to great degrees on the radio these days and there are no signs of it slowing down.
I wonder when the day will come when many artists return to the basics of being original, writing their own music and/or lyrics (or hire someone to do it for them). True talent and truly new and original music would be quite refreshing in this new millennium.
Thanks for your input! :)

Thought of another one:
Pras - Islands in the Stream
Eminem writes intensely crafted lyrics and occasionally puts his hand into the production. Radiohead makes intensely orchestrated album statements about alienation. I believe that Eminem is much better at what he does than Radiohead is at theirs. It's an apple/orange comparison to be sure, but that's my opinion. (And really, my animosity toward Radiohead is only directed towards their last two albums, I like their other work.) And for the record, Eminem has made a real attempt at singing; by all accounts, Eminem's included, it sucked and sucked hard.
