Subject: Dumb Question
Does anyone know, or know how to find out:
What is the most recorded song written in the twentieth century? Not the most copies sold, but the song recorded by the greatest number of artists.
Subject: Re: Dumb Question
I can tell you the "Most Charted" song is "Unchained Melody" with 9 charted versions.
Subject: Re: Dumb Question
I only know that the Beatles song "Yesterday" is the most played...sorry :-/
Subject: Re: Dumb Question
Don't quote me on this, but I believe it's "Wild Thing."
Subject: Re: Dumb Question
I am not sure how accurate this site is, but it claims that the most recorded song is Yesterday by John Lennon and Paul McCartney

That's what I have heard/read a number of times but have no way of confirming it's accuracy...

Anyone know the count on Stairway To Heaven. (How can you beat Rolf Harris' version ;D)
Subject: Re: Dumb Question
I do believe it is Yesterday. A quick check in the Guinness Book of Records tonight will confirm it for me, at least...

Another vote for "Yesterday". At least thats what I remember hearing, reading, etc. I gotta be honest though, like R&RF said, maybe it was the most played.
Subject: Re: Dumb Question
I would have figured it was some Christmas song. Consider how many Christmas cds there are out there that play the same songs only performed by different people (either vocally or instrumentally).
Of course, it's possible all the popular Christmas songs were written before the 20th century.

127 CD Tracks, that is... including the recent album The Definitive Rolf Harris.

I know the website cited stated that "Yesterday" is most recorded, but it didn't cite any examples.
I guess I'm wondering if the question should be "recorded AND AVAILABLE TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC - or PLAYED ON RADIO" or some such. I mean, truthfully, there are many recording studios around and any 2-bit Joe Schmo can get it done for himself if he wants. Heck, even at some amusement parks! I have a feeling they're counting these types of things - come on, 1600?
True about the Christmas question. There are plenty written this century that are huge staples.

"Chestnuts roasting..."
Rudolph
"White Christmas"
"Let it snow"
"Winter Wonderland"
"I'll be home for Christmas"
"Blue Christmas"
"Jingle Bell Rock"
"Silver Bells"
"It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas"
And others. There are plenty of them. Just about any of them could stomp "Yesterday"s rump in the most-recorded department.

Sammy... all those songs were written in the 20th century... ;D
Subject: Re: Dumb Question
After thinking it over, I think I know what you are meaning here. When you said "this century", I think you mean the 2000's instead of the 1900's, right?. No, I don't guess there have been many Christmas songs written in the last 2 years that have been very popular. I don't guess "Santa's got a Hot-Rod Sleigh" will be etched in too many minds.
The original question at the top was about the 20th century, though, and I still think those Christmas songs had to be recorded more than "Yesterday".
Subject: Re: Dumb Question
I agree with you on that. If I had to bet, I'd put money on White Christmas being more recognizable than almost any other song.
Has anyone written more than one Christmas classic? I know Irving Berlin has pocketed two holiday classics... White Christmas and Easter Parade.
Subject: Re: Dumb Question
I think Island Girl got it right with Lennon & McCartney's "Yesterday" -- google says it's been recorded 1600 time.
Google also says the second most recorded song is John Hartford's "Gentle On My Mind".
Before 1955, "Silent Night" was the most recorded, and "St Louis Blues" was second.
"White Christmas" has been recorded by over 500 artists.
