Subject: Any law scholars out there?
Written By: Natalie on 08/22/02 at 09:23 p.m.
I have a question for anyone who knows anything about law.
Here's my problem:
A few weeks ago I put a $200 deposit down on a videographer to reserve a date for my wedding (October 25, 2003). During our consulation she never mentioned anything about the deposit being non-refundable, nor did she have me sign any documentation to that effect. She told me she'd send a contract w/in a week, yet I never received the contract. Since our meeting, my fiance and I have decided not to go w/ her because 1. She's WAY too expensive and 2. there are many other videographers out there who provide more than she does for at least $1,000 less.
Usually I never book anything w/o thoroughly thinking it through, but I didn't know of any other videographers who did nice work like her, until I found another company. Plus, we've re-thought our budget, and she's entirely too expensive.
She told me she wasn't going to be able to refund my deposit. Since I'm letting her know WELL in advance, I never signed a contract or was never informed of the non-refundable deposit, I feel I should receive the deposit back.
I've heard that unless services were rendered, deposits must be refunded. Is this true? Can anyone tell me anything about this or at least point me in the right direction? I hate to resort to legalities, because I'm totally not like that, but I would at least like to have some sort of law to back me up. Please help! :)
