Annie Lennox Didn't like her too much
Grace Jones Yuck!
10. Do you think homosexuality was more accepted in the 1980s than in previous decades? If yes, state why.
Yes, the 80s represented a generation that deviated from the norm with their lifestyles and ways of expression. Teens/young adults in the 80s were more expressive with their individuality - they were more comfortable with their sexuality than previous generations.
11. If you had to choose a role model or idol from the music scene in the 1980s, who would your choice be and why?
I don't idolize anyone - especially from the music scene. I enjoy artists' music, but that's the extent.

Well, perhaps any song by George Michael or that song "I wanna sex you up" ( I forgot who sang that one).

Shoo, about 90% of the music industry

Hmm, I have no idea.
Subject: Re: Questionnare!
1. Are You? (Make your answer bold)
Male
Female
2. How old are you? (Make your answer bold)
16 to 20
21 to 30
31 to 35
36 to 40
41 to 50
3. What do you recall most about the 1980s? The 8 years of the Reagan administration, my graduation, AIDS, my mother getting a donated kidney.
4. What do you think the most prominent feature that sums up the 80s is for you? The music, plus it was the height of the sexual revolution and the advent of condoms as a deterent to AIDS.
5. What do you think characterised these aspects of popular culture in the 80s?
Fashion
Mostly blue jeans, more sexual provocative clothing like shorter minis and tank tops, stocking cut offs, along with experimentation with wildly colored hair and body piercings, though not as much as in later decades.
Music
The peak of the New Wave movement in music. More British artist made the top 40 than America artists. Duran Duran was very popular. Michael Jackson, Madonna, Phil Collins, Lionel Ritchie, Billy Idol, Billy Joel, Whitney Houston, just some of the mega-stars that defined the 80s.
Television and Film
Other than the E.T., the Star Wars films, and the Indiana Jones films, nothing that would be define the 80s. Moviegoers were into a lot of action and suspense like Fatal Attraction, Basic Instinct, and the first 2 Lethal Weapon films. Mel Gibson was very popular then, as were Sally Field, Sigorney Weaver, Melanie Griffith, Robin Williams, Eddie Murphy, Harrison Ford, and Tom Cruise. A collage of young talent with promise, called the Brat Pack, was the catch phrase for the media. As for television, a lot of drek like Alf, The Hogan Family, and T.J. Hooker became hits. Still there was some quality shows like The Cosby Show, Family Ties, and Hill Street Blues, made NBC the Must-See TV network under the late Brandon Tartikoff.
6. What sort of clothes did you wear? Name some specific items. Mostly blue jeans and t-shirts. But I also wore corderoy pants, white jeans, Reebok shoes, and for church ushering, some polyester and cotton suits.
7. What genres of music did you prefer? Name some of your favourite artists from that era. Mostly New Wave or Top 40 music. Like Duran Duran, Def Leppard, Billy Idol, Kim Wilde, Donna Summer, Genesis, And "Thriller" by Michael Jackson.
8. How did you view the androgyny of the decade? Mostly with disdained. I was raised in an environment that rejected things that were "out there" or "daring". In other words, boys should dress like boys and girls should dress like girls. I still haven't got used to the androgynous look, especially now that some look exactly like one from the opposite sex.
9. What do you think about these artists during the 80s?
Boy George
Never liked him or his music. IMHO, he should have been a one-hit wonder. After about 100 plays of "Karma Chameleon", the novelt wore out.
Annie Lennox
Liked her talent a lot. She was bold and outspoken. And I don't think she took her androgyny as seriously as Boy George. I liked her Eurthymics stuff more than her solos.
Grace Jones
The same as Annie Lennox, with a sense of humor. Her voice was so low, she profitted from her androgynous looks. I liked the cover of "Demolition Man".
10. Do you think homosexuality was more accepted in the 1980s than in previous decades? If yes, state why. Yes, because the AIDS tragedies made homosexuals that came out heroes, especially Rock Hudson and Freddie Mercury. But it wasn't a homosexual disease as it was the "sexually active" disease. And brought to light the hypocrisy of big entertainment honchos who tried to hide homosexuality in a effort to "promote the myth" of perfection.
11. If you had to choose a role model or idol from the music scene in the 1980s, who would your choice be and why? Billy Joel, because he had contemplated suicide before he was successful, and his songs teach us about second chances in life. Also, Lionel Ritchie and Phil Collins.
12. Can you think of any particular songs which have a specific gender or sexual orientation theme? Johnny, Are You Queer, Boy? (I forget the group), Homo-Sapien by Pete Shelley, and the songs of lesbian folk singer Phranc.
13. Before the 80s, were there any influential artists who challenged the publics’ perceptions on gender representation? Mick Jagger,Elton John, Rod Stewart, David Bowie, Janis Joplin, The Village People, Hall and Oates in their early years.
14. Can you name any artists who were doing this in the 90’s and are doing this in the present day? To name a few: Garbage, The Indigo Girls, Melissa Etheridge, Michelle Shocked, The Cure, Dead or Alive, the Pet Shop Boys.
15. What sort of music interests you today? Alternative, hard rock, Christian Rock, some pop, but not Britney Spears. ;)
16. Is this at all similar to what you listened to in the 1980s? (Make your answer bold)
Yes, somewhat.
No
17. Do you still listen to any music from the 80s? (Make your answer bold)
Yes, on occasion
No
18. If yes, can you name some specific artists and/or songs that you still listen to? No not offhand
19. The title of this research is ‘Gender Representation in 1980s Popular Culture’. What does this mean to you? It means to me that all cultural and sexual groups first started to make noise in the mainstream.
Subject: Re: Questionnare!
Hi Criz
Here ya go... :)
1. Are You?
Male
2. How old are you? (Make your answer bold)
41 to 50
3. What do you recall most about the 1980s?
That everyone under the age of 20 ran down the 60's
4. What do you think the most prominent feature that sums up the 80s is for you?
The insular thinking of the era, particularly regarding how it was 'the best'
5. What do you think characterised these aspects of popular culture in the 80s?
Fashion Anything counted as fashion
Music It had started to go downhill overall, but there was still some really good stuff being done
Television and Film Got better overall
6. What sort of clothes did you wear? Name some specific items.
Have never been fashion conscious, so find it hard to categorise - used to wear jeans but ditched them as could never find a comfortable pair.....
7. What genres of music did you prefer? Name some of your favourite artists from that era.
Icehouse, Split Enz, Hunters & Collectors, etc
8. How did you view the androgyny of the decade?
Found it amusing as a lot of the androgynous types I knew had convinced themselves there were doing it because there were being 'Individual' :D
9. What do you think about these artists during the 80s?
Boy George Was alright, a bit of an eye opener at the time !
Annie Lennox Never did go for the aggressive type
Grace Jones Ditto for above - nice hair - look like it was caught in one of those machines that crushes cars into little cubes !
10. Do you think homosexuality was more accepted in the 1980s than in previous decades? If yes, state why.
Yes - there was more exposure throught the media to it, and generally society seemed to just be more accepting
11. If you had to choose a role model or idol from the music scene in the 1980s, who would your choice be and why?
Iva Davies (lead singer of Icehouse) - got heavily criticised for sounding like David Bowie - he didn''t give a damn. His group produced great music in the 80's style whilst not forgetting that you could still have lyrics that made sense, and harmonise, and actually 'sing'....
12. Can you think of any particular songs which have a specific gender or sexual orientation theme?
No.....
13. Before the 80s, were there any influential artists who challenged the publics’ perceptions on gender representation?
David Bowie
14. Can you name any artists who were doing this in the 90’s and are doing this in the present day?
Ummm, not my scene, but Marilyn Manson ?
15. What sort of music interests you today?
Most - could leave out Jazz, not keen on that. Country doesn't do much for me either (and by Country I mean the "I drove my 84 wheeler down to see my old girlfriend whose dog was dying of termite bites" type country....)
16. Is this at all similar to what you listened to in the 1980s? (Make your answer bold)
Yes
17. Do you still listen to any music from the 80s? (Make your answer bold)
Yes !
18. If yes, can you name some specific artists and/or songs that you still listen to?
Heaps ! Too many to go into
19. The title of this research is ‘Gender Representation in 1980s Popular Culture’. What does this mean to you?
It means how the 80's was influenced by the participants, the personas they portrayed, the songs they sang, the clothes they wore, the things they said, etc etc....
Subject: Re: Questionnare!
1. Are You? (Make your answer bold)
Male
Female
2. How old are you? (Make your answer bold)
16 to 20
21 to 30
31 to 35
36 to 40
41 to 50
3. What do you recall most about the 1980s? The music. And my parents' divorce.
4. What do you think the most prominent feature that sums up the 80s is for you? For me, it would be the music.
5. What do you think characterised these aspects of popular culture in the 80s?
Fashion
Denim, tight fitting clothes, bright colors as well as black, and less material.
Music
Synth Pop was big, as well as the Heavy Metal "hair bands." The onset of rap music began.
Television and Film
For TV, MTV has (and still does) influenced the popular culture of its time. I remember television shows accentuating wealth, as well as what would be considered controversial topics (AIDS, teen pregnancy, child/spousal abuse, etc.)
Films targeted the younger generation. Not that I remember much before the 80's, but it seemed fast food restaurants began selling toys in the kids' meals that were related to current movies. There were a lot of action films, also films about the trials & tribulations of adolescence (sp)
6. What sort of clothes did you wear? Name some specific items. Mainly blue jeans, cuffed and tapered at the ankle, or shorts that came to or a few inches above my knee, t-shirts with surf/skateboard logos, Canvas sneakers like Vans, Converse and Airwalks
7. What genres of music did you prefer? Name some of your favourite artists from that era. I immersed myself into club music and at the time (1986) I was hearing all sorts from r&b, new wave, rap, disco/Hi-NRG, even some house music. Favorite artists from the 80's include (but not limited to) Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Prince, and Madonna.
8. How did you view the androgyny of the decade? I didn't really give it much thought to be honest.
9. What do you think about these artists during the 80s?
Boy George
I think I was confused at first but I liked Culture Club's music.
Annie Lennox
The first video I ever saw was "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" That orange hair, buzzed. I enjoyed her music, and she has a great voice.
Grace Jones
This would probably be the first artist I would associate with the term "androgeny" only because I had seen it in an article about her. Bold, aggressive. I never really got into Grace Jones, but didn't dislike her either.
10. Do you think homosexuality was more accepted in the 1980s than in previous decades? If yes, state why. I believe it was, due to exposure from the media.
11. If you had to choose a role model or idol from the music scene in the 1980s, who would your choice be and why? I don't idolize celebrities.
12. Can you think of any particular songs which have a specific gender or sexual orientation theme? "Boy" and "Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls" by Book of Love, "Sometimes" by Erasure, "Smalltown Boy" by Bronski Beat
13. Before the 80s, were there any influential artists who challenged the publics’ perceptions on gender representation?
David Bowie, Elton John
14. Can you name any artists who were doing this in the 90’s and are doing this in the present day? Pete Burns from Dead or Alive, Marilyn Manson, Boy George
15. What sort of music interests you today? Not much of today's music interests me. Radio seems to limit what I hear as far as today's artists. I'm sure there are plenty of new artists that have some great material, but I don't go out searching for it and the media doesn't turn me on to it. I usually listen to 80's music, or dance music from the 90's (house, techno, some rap).
16. Is this at all similar to what you listened to in the 1980s? (Make your answer bold)
Yes
No
17. Do you still listen to any music from the 80s? (Make your answer bold)
Yes!!!
No
18. If yes, can you name some specific artists and/or songs that you still listen to? See question #7. Also, Yaz, The Cure, The Smiths, Front 242, Dance music from the Oak Lawn Records label.
19. The title of this research is ‘Gender Representation in 1980s Popular Culture’. What does this mean to you? Um, I guess how men and women were portrayed/perceived in the 80's by what they wore and what music they listened to...

17. Do you still listen to any music from the 80s? every now and then I'll catch an 80's flashback weekend on the radio and might buy a CD once in a blue moon but these days music isn't such a big part of my life compared to the way it was in the 80's.
18. If yes, can you name some specific artists and/or songs that you still listen to? I do still love listening to Billy Idol. In fact the radio station I listen to plays him frequently

The decade where men wore makeup and a lot of time wore it better women. The decade when a woman could look "butch" and not be automatically assumed a lesbian. Freedom of expression will never be like it was back in the 80's. The 80's totally ruled, like fer sure ;D.

Music Lots of synthesizers early on, somthing that was never heard before, even though synthesizers were invented many, many years before, according to my older brother. Also, there were a lot of "crossover hits". For example, a song being a hit on both the country and the pop charts.
Television and Film Movies were much more likely to be in touch with real world fashions and slang. My mom would always comment when we were watching older movies that "We never talked like that in the '50's", or "I never knew anyone who would wear something like that"
6. What sort of clothes did you wear? Name some specific items.I wore mostly jeans. For tops, it was a bright or neon color, usually a polo shirt or something with long tails in the back. Shoes were either "elf boots" or "granny boots". I wore a lot of those rubber/jelly bracelets, and I had "big hair". I dyed it in several different colors (all at the same time)
7. What genres of music did you prefer? Name some of your favourite artists from that era.At the time I listened to pop, 'new wave', goth, and some heavy metal. Duran Duran, Adam and the Ants, Siouxie and the Banshees, Lene Lovich, Dio, and Ozzy Osbourne come to mind.
8. How did you view the androgyny of the decade?Personally, I took it as another form of "expressing individuality".
9. What do you think about these artists during the 80s?
Boy GeorgeWaaay too much makeup. Overkill. A nice voice, though.
Annie Lennox Awesome voice. But please stick to one look for at least six months, so I'll know it's you in that picture
Grace Jones Wow. Cool voice, cool look, and great songs.
10. Do you think homosexuality was more accepted in the 1980s than in previous decades? If yes, state why.Yes, starting with the whole androgyny thing. The first few artists who did it, stated publicly that they were not homosexual, that it was just a "fashion thing". That turned out to be not entirely true, but it was a way of pushing the envelope.
11. If you had to choose a role model or idol from the music scene in the 1980s, who would your choice be and why? This would be late 80's Aerosmith. They got back together as a group, went into drug and alcohol detox and recovery and were the first celebrities to talk about it afterwards with a "learn from our mistakes" kind of attitude, instead of trying to hide it from the public.
12. Can you think of any particular songs which have a specific gender or sexual orientation theme?songs, no
13. Before the 80s, were there any influential artists who challenged the publics’ perceptions on gender representation? I grew up with my mother having the biggest crush on Liberace!!!!
14. Can you name any artists who were doing this in the 90’s and are doing this in the present day?In the 90's, I wasn't paying much attention to popular culture. As for today, the only one I can think of is Marilyn Manson, but then he/she/it is also challenging the perception of what is human, too. :P
15. What sort of music interests you today?Mostly World/Ethnic music and Goth. But I will still listen to the stuff from the 80's when I can find it.
16. Is this at all similar to what you listened to in the 1980s? (Make your answer bold)
Yes
No. I'd say about 85% of what I listen to today is radically different from what I listened to in the 80's
17. Do you still listen to any music from the 80s? (Make your answer bold)
Yes, though it's getting harder to find, lately.
No
18. If yes, can you name some specific artists and/or songs that you still listen to?Siouxsie and the Banshees, Alien Sex Fiend, Dio, Ozzy, and a bunch of hometown bands that never made it to the bigtime. Also, I can't say if they've done anything recently, but Flock of Seagulls.
19. The title of this research is ‘Gender Representation in 1980s Popular Culture’. What does this mean to you? How people saw the lines between what is male and what is female and whether or not it was blurred.
