What is the last CD you bought?  I just got "Born in the USA" by Bruce Springsteen for $1.00 at a garage sale. :)

I have not bought anything in a few years I guess...I either burn copies of people's cd's  or I get my music from WinMix...I would not know what to buy right now anyway...who wants a whole album when you can download the songs you want off the net for free! ? !

Mine was Pete Yorn: "Music for the morning after" got it at Circuit City for ten bucks in feb, wouldn't have bought it, but they had it on display and I listened to it, and it was pretty good.  Then I watched the grammys and decided to not buy anymore cd's till the RIAA changes thier position.

Well, I'm getting a copy of the new Everly's Twofer today or tomorrow, but the last one I did get was the other one, "It's Everly Time/A Date With", featuring tracks like "Love Hurts", "Silent Treatment" and "A Change Of Heart", along with "Sleepless Nights", and "What Kind Of Girl Are You", among the best.

My comments would echo Cricket's regarding "who buys anymore".

Having said that, I brought one last Thursday form a guy I used to work with who does music reviews for the local rag here, so he gets tham all supplied by the music companies and then seels them off half price.

It was Gordon Lightfoot's greatest hits

Does it have to be "CD"?  Actually, in this case, it is.

Don't laugh.   :-X  I'm going thru early-mid-life crisis.....I bought "80s Modern Rock" or whatever it's called, a little after I bought a "Monster 80s" CD.

But I swear I haven't bought any others before - nor do I have any regular albums from the '80s!  (Well, I do have older....but we won't get into that - I'm just a music freak who happens not to have had '80s things until now.)

Why do you think we would think this is funny, I have many 80's Cd's including the two you mentioned, I love them, and I'm definately not embaressed to listen two them in public. :)

I hit a flea market Sunday, and I picked up about 20 CDs for around $50 or so.. a lot of Primus and 60s compilations.. and an Eurythmics album.. haven't even had a chance to listen to more than a couple of them..

I download probably 20-30 mp3s every day, but I still buy CDs, because there's a lot of stuff not online, and the quality is still much better than the mp3s you do find online.. while I can think of plenty of artists who have an album with maybe only one good song on them, there's plenty who release good stuff that I wouldn't hear unless I bought the album..

that being said, I'll never pay full price for a new CD, they're almost up to $20, which is a total rip off

OK, I know many wouldn't think it so bad here, but we do have younger and older people on these boards, too, who might have the same kind of view that (too many) people have of '70s stuff! :D

Also, even if you're the right age, you might think exactly what I said - "she's in a retro crisis now, living in the past"!  LOL    ;D  (Actually, in the 80s kids said I lived in the past - I still do, really, I'm a history nut anyway!)

That's an awesome bargain, CG.  I agree, so many CD albums are around $18, it's ridiculous.  I think the cheapest 1s cost $12.  They cost that much when they came out in the '80s!  After all this technological advance over 15 years, you'd think they'd be *cheaper* by now - they should be!

This is 1 of the (several) reasons I never bothered w/CDs until my parents bought me a gift boom box w/CD a few years ago.  But now I have a new car w/CD so I will have to get more used to them!  (<----see that?  living in the past again, dragged kicking&screaming into present.)

I *wanted* to buy an el-cheapo version of "Carmina Burana" from a clearance table in the local shopping centre a few weeks ago but I forgot and someone else must have got it.

I know I've said it before but it does make me smile when you all complain about the price of cd's.In England you pay twice as much as in America hence all the English tourists spending a fortune in Tower Records or Virgin(Orlando)!!The last time I was in Orlando I could hardly lift my hand luggage bag as it was full of cd's! If you get caught at customs they add a tax of 33percent......

Daaaaa-ong. You bought from FYE? Even I wouldn't buy CDs from there. You must have had some serious itch to burn a hole in your wallet. The only way I pay that much is if it's an import or a hard-to-find album, but I'll take on the patience of Job if I know I can find it cheaper somewhere else. I went by one to-day at the Irvine Spectrum and even the "Rite Price" CDs were 4-5 dollars more (all I'm thinking is: "their lease must be an astronomical amount of money to charge this much").

Actually, I bought all three CD's for actually just under $20 total, not $20 apiece for each of them.  That's like a little over $6 for each CD.  Just thought I'd clear that up.  They were in the bargain bin.

Holy crap! You guys don't make that much either (about $6.08 USD)! But I guess we also have to take into account that the cost of living must be less - like healthcare, education, housing, and other public things that Americans usually pay for and the Brits don't, but I'm just guessing now since I can't believe the miserable wages the Brits get (they do get more vacation time though, so that's cool - the Americans get nil in that dept. :-/ ).

How do you expect for all the people who worked on the album to get paid? Besides the artists, there are the accountants, the lawyers, the promoters, the graphic artists, the distributors, the drivers, the studio technicians, et cetera. It's not too far off CD's are already showing up for five dollars at stores like Dollar General.  those Guys would still get paid. here is a breakdown of the costs:

http://www.epinions.com/musc-review-806-D5305E8-3926EB5C-prod3
Anyways, I think instead of fighting MP3s the record companies should be figuring out a way to compete.

Subject: Re: Most recent CD you purchased

Written By: ThunderVamp9 on 12/29/02 at 09:40 p.m.

I agree with Screwball.  The RIAA has screwed themselves out of my money.  They did it when they shut down Napster.  Prior to that shutdown I was buying a CD a month.  Prior to Napster being around, I was buying a CD per YEAR.  That was in increase of 1200% in my purchasing, thanks to Napster.  Since the shutdown of Napster, and the follwing rash of lawsuits on every file-sharing program that they can go after, I have ceased to purchase CD's completely.  The final straw being my Eagles Live CD's.

This set cost me nearly $30.  It came on 2 CD's.  On a whim, I decided to try and see if I could fit them on a single CD for use in my car.  And I COULD.  Every song fit on a single CD, including an accidental 2 second blank gap between each song because I forgot to set it for no gap.  And the record company only offers the album as a 2 CD set, for nearly $30.  THAT is a rip-off, and no lawyers, accountants, promoters, graphic artists, distributors, drivers, studio technicians, et cetera can account for it.  How much more did it cost to produce that second CD?  A quarter?  If that?  And yet they charge nearly twice as much for the set, and they could just put it all on 1 CD instead, offering it at a lower price.  THAT, to me, was the final straw, the ultimate symbol of the greed that has become the Music Industry and the RIAA, and I will never purchase another CD again as a result.

Edited to add:
I will admit to one bout of hypocrisy here.  I did purchase Def Leppard's "X" when it came out, and will always purchase what they put out, for 2 reasons.  They're a known quantity/quality.  What they do is always worth the money, you can listen to each CD from beginning to end without going "that sucks, that sucks, that sucks"  AND I want the original CD and artwork for their material.  But the prices are STILL outrageous, and if it wasn't Def Leppard, I would still not buy it.  That's my addiction at work there.

I just bought the 3-cd set of Classic Alternatives from the 80's on the SPG label for $16.00 USD.  Most tracks are the extended versions.  It contains quite a few tracks I already had on vinyl, and some I didn't have yet (like the 10 minute version of Ultravox's "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes" and Pete Shelley's 9 minute dub/dance mix of "Homosapien").
