Subject: What songs remind you of events/places ?

Written By: FussBudgetVanPelt on 06/27/02 at 08:20 p.m.

Hello

There are songs that when I hear them always remind me of an event or place from a previous time.

I'm sure other people have the same 'flashbacks'.

Here are mine :

Early 70's - Cracklin' Rosie - Neil Diamond

Reminds me of riding in Malcolm Cook's car at the coast on christmas holidays - I asked him what would happen if he didn't change gears, and he told me the car would blow up.  I lived in fear for years after that that Dad would forget to change gears and kill us all !

1974 - You Make Me Feel Brand New - Stylistics

Reminds me of my trip to New Zealand - they played the song over and over while I was there.

1982 - Seven Tears - Goombay Dance Band

When I went to Britain in 1982 it was the big hit at the time, so always reminds me of there.

1985 - I'm On Fire - Bruce Springsteen

Back in New Zealand on holidays again - this time the only record the NZ D.J.'s had was Bruce !

I'd be interested to hear about all of yours...

enya--only time...reminds me of funeral homes because it was playing at both the funerals i had to attend in november.

james--laid...reminds me of my freshman year of college...my party friend and i always pumped ourselves up for frat parties that year by blasting that song.

that's really all i can think of for this topic...smell is a much more effective memory trigger for me personally.

Again don't ask me why:

"Sledgehammer" reminds me of MT. Hood

"Carless Whisper" - reminds me of Mountain Park (an area in the town where I grew up)

"Slide"  reminds me of a bar (any bar actually)

"Desert Rose" reminds me of greece

"Janes Getting Serious" - reminds me of a mountain that has a cross on it outside of Denver.

"Everything Zen" - reminds me of boot camp

The old HAMS beer Jingle - Reminds me of the John Day River in eastern oregon

"One in a Million" by Larry Graham reminds me of Jesse Owens and the Ohio State Marching Band. The band played the song as a tribute to Owens, who had died a week before.
Any Kiss song reminds me of AM radio and Ft. Meade, MD in 1975-76. My dad was stationed there when he was in the Army. And the rock station in Baltimore, WCAO, played a lot of Kiss.

"Love Bites" - a date with a man I let slip through my fingers.

"Crazy for You" - A guy I had a major crush on who barely knew I existed...ahhh high school.

"Fight for the Right to Party, Smokin' in the Boys Room" - Stomps at school with the group of kids I hung out with.

"The Zoo" - The area in the bleachers where we hung out was called The Zoo.

Oooh, good topic!  ;)

Hysteria - (Def Lep) reminds me of when we first bought our house.

West End Girls - (PSBoys) reminds me of when I lived in Michigan.  We had a black and white checkered floor in our basement, and I used to dance to that song whenever it came on.

Just Because/Baby, I love Your Way  - (Will to Power re-makes) reminds me of Jr. High dances.

The Dance - (Garth Brooks) also reminds me of Jr. High dances.

I could go on and on and on and on and on and on and on...but I won't! :)

Oh, certain smells trigger memories for me, too.  The smell of bellpeppers reminds me of Christmastime (mom always makes stuffed bellpeppers for dinner).

I could go on and on and on and on and on and on and
on...but I won't! ;)

I can't believe I forgot this one:

Joanna by Kool & The Gang reminds me of my first crush.  I think I was about 7 yrs. old, and I had to wait at the local high school for my bus to take me to the day care center.  I never minded the wait because at the end of every day, this gorgeous (at least I thought he was gorgeous at the time) guy walked by me as he was leaving class.  I used to pretend my name was JoAnna and that he was singing the song to me.

I guess that's kinda weird!  I wonder where he is now!?!

Hi Fuss...

I actually thought about posting a similar topic a few months back but for some reason never got around to it.  Anyway, this one sounds like fun!

*All songs by Gordon Lightfoot bring back a flood of memories, as that's who my parents mostly played when I was a child.

"Georgy Girl" (The New Seekers) - is my very first music memory.  I was less than a year old when it was popular but I think my mom must have had the record because I remember hearing it a lot!

"Joy To The World" (Three Dog Night) - even though the song had come out a few years before, this one always reminds me of 5th grade...when my teacher had the whole class singing it.  She awarded a prize to the student whom she felt did the best job singing.  Can you guess who won?  ;D  Yes, all that for a silly little pack of gum!  ::)

"The Loco-Motion" (Grand Funk Railroad) - I can clearly remember hearing this song during an Easter egg hunt in 1974!  :D

"Rocky Mountain High" (John Denver) - reminds me of our camping trips to Carmel, California when I was a kid.

"Philadelphia Freedom" (Elton John) - I think my brother and I played this one over and over until it was ingrained in my brain!

"Shadow Dancing" (Andy Gibb) - reminds me of a slumber party I went to at a friend's house.  We sure wore out that album with our eyes!!!  ;D

"Funkytown" (Lipps, Inc.) - I remember hanging laundry out on the clothesline and hearing this song playing a couple of miles away at a beach park.  We lived on a cliff and so the music would drift in our direction.  People must have really loved it because it was loud!

"Desire" (Andy Gibb) - whenever I hear this song I am instantly transported back to 1980 and the time I had a huge crush on a guy who wouldn't give me the time of day!

"Freeze Frame" (J. Geils Band) - reminds me of my sophomore year in high school.  I picture a friend of mine walking through the corridors with a goofy smile on his face.

Okay, I guess this is getting long now.  One more:

"Second Chance" (.38 Special) - this one has sentimental meaning for me because it was the first song that me and my future husband ever danced to!  ;)

Journey - In The Beginning album - I had it on the headphones when I was cycling in the 80s, and hearing some of the music still brings back images of roads whizzing by

Janes Addiction - Jane Says/Yello - You Gotta Say Yes To Another Excess - I lived in a serious dope hole for a year, and just listening to the music makes me feel stoned.  Much cheaper!

Beatles - Eight Days a Week Brings back school holiday/first crush memories.  Don't know why that song particularly, but it must have been on at just the right sort of time.

Rod Stewart - any of his Reminds me of my first girlfriend: we didn't have much music in common that we could agree on.

er... I guess that's it

"The Battle of Evermore" by Led Zeppelin reminds me of my first week in college in 1989 when my soon to be first boyfriend in college and my best friend and I walked up to the old abandoned coal mines and laid down in middle of the road and listened to that song as we watched the stars.  It was a magical time.

"Don't Stand So Close To Me"  by The Police.  Oh yeah.  Big crush.  8th grade Algebra teacher.  Older men, yum.  And I was his favorite student, but it was nothing like the song!

"Joy To The World" by Three Dog Night.  I had 7 45s that I would play in college and my best friend and I would sing and dance along to them.  We always started off with this one.

"Closer" by Nine Inch Nails.  Dance clubs and the contest to see which of us could get the most phone numbers offered to us.  This song always guaranteed a few.

"Toxicity" by System of a Down will always remind me of the the robot team and the crazy six weeks we had to design and build a robot before we shipped it off.  This was a song the kids loved to play in the shop and it suited the shop and our lives rather well.

Too many to mention, I'll just name a few.

Erasure - "Stop", FYC - "She Drives Me Crazy (Justin Strauss Mix)"  and N.W.A's "Dope Man" remind me of a teen club in Tempe AZ, Sgt. Pepper's.

Anything of the Grease Soundtrack reminds me of playing this album on my friend's portable turntable with disco lights that would flicker to the music.

Bell Biv Devoe, Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer and a bunch of the cheese hip hop from 1990 remind me of DJing at a teen club called Outland.

Real McCoy - "Another Night"  reminds me of the Newbar in Raleigh NC in '94-'95

Most 80's songs will remind me of the Five-O or growing up in Phoenix.

Motley Crue's "Theatre of Pain" album reminds me of riding the bus to & from school in 8th grade.

Violent Femmes' self titled album, GnR's "Appetite for Destruction", Def Leppard's "Hysteria" and The Cure's "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" albums remind me of the bus ride sophomore year (until I got my driver's license).

Sir Mix-A-Lot's "Swass" Too $hort's "Life Is Too Short" and Eazy E's "Eazy Duz It" remind me of blasting my car stereo cruising around town.

The song Amazing Grace reminds me of the last sceene in Silkwood when Karen is killed in her car. Til this day I can't listen to that song without thinking about her.
This is kind of embarassing in chirch when we have to sing it.

70's

Chicago's "Color My World" reminds me of the summer a guy who had a crush on me sang that song to me thru my bedroom window.  I was 13-14 at the time...made a very big impression on me!  He didn't make it into my BR, however, brownie points were made because of the Lance Romance factor alone!

80's
John Waites' "Missing You" reminds me of the fact that I didn't miss my 1st hub at all!
Journey's "Open Arms" reminds me of a more romantic time that I spent with my ex-fiance...the one who, after we broke up,  went on to marry a very young girl and murder his mother in law in 1994. Toodles!

Late 80's/Early 90's
Journey's "Separate Ways" and "Loving, Touching, Squeezing" and The Manhattans "Kiss And Say Goodbye"*
reminds me of my crazy bartending days, when I was a part of the floor show/entertainment.
* Yes, I know "Kiss" was not of this time period, but this is when I was doing all this crazy stuff, and when I hear the song that's what I think of.

90's
Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy, Nirvana's "Teen Spirit" and Metallica's "Enter Sandman" remind me of my clubbing/dance days at Party Tap in Lansing, IL.  We ruled there- we knew all the bouncers, the owners, etc. Blast!!!
Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" reminds me of the first time my husband and I slow danced together...he sang it in my ear. (We were dating at the time.) I knew he was a keeper!
The Goo-Goo Dolls "Iris" and Garbage's "Only Happy When It Rains" remind me of my late son, Eric. As do most all songs by Korn.

00's
Coldplay's "Trouble" takes me back, again, to Eric. I never meant to cause him harm.

"Just Another Victim" by Helmet & House of Pain, and "Jump Around" by House of Pain remind me of the New Year's Eve I met my best friend at a local nightclub.  We had both won free admission through the radio station, and every Saturday night after that, (until I got married) we would go back to the same club.  Those two songs were always played in that order at the exact same time each week.

"Always and Forever" was always played at the junior high dances.  None of the boys would get up to dance at all until this one was played.

"I Want Candy" Reminds me also of junior high.  There was one boy every girl had a crush on.  We all wanted a photo of him, but he would always duck whenever there was a camera around.  He was even absent on school picture day.  We would always change the song when we sang it, so instead of saying "Candy" we were singing his name.

Journey's "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" always reminds me of this girl I knew in junior high... she tried so hard to hit the same pitch as Steve Perry, but couldn't quite pull it off.  :P

"She's So Cold" by the Stones always makes me think of a night out with my high school friends... we were always blasting that song.

"Another Brick in the Wall" by Pink Floyd takes me back to late Sunday nights listening to the countdown on the radio when I was supposed to already be asleep.

"Turn Me Loose" by Loverboy makes me remember these three girls from high school... Glenda, Susan and Rebecca. I can't remember their last names, but they played the song in the parking lot in the morning before classes started, and there was this little dance they had that went along with it.

My most important song memory ever...."One Sweet Day" from Mariah Carey.  It will always be tied in w/my beloved dog and her death.

This song was just coming out when I took my dog back home, on what would be her last long trip from CT to MD w/me, and I happened across it when we were around NYC.  I thought it sounded nice then noticed some of the lyrics.  Since I only heard part of the song and couldn't make out everything while driving around that screwy beltway, I 1st thought maybe it was sort of praise to Jesus.  Then I heard it later and realized it was about losing someone, which was pretty too.

A month later, my never-to-be-forgotten dog fell apart w/in a couple days, and I had to put her down finally just before Thanksgiving.  By that time this song was a big hit, would remain so for many many weeks, you'd hear it all the time, and I thought it was so odd it should coincide like that.  I was a wreck that Dec.  This song just really struck a chord w/me and I always think of her death and our lives together when I hear it.  And yes, I bought a single of it, and have a hits album w/"One Sweet Day" on it.

I have many other associations w/songs but this is by far the most direct and emotional.
