Subject: OK,OK, I'll ask...
Will someone explain the penguin stuff please?
Why penguins?
Who are penguins?
How are penguins named?, aged?
Thanks!! Trinity
Subject: Re: OK,OK, I'll ask...
Hi Trinity
A good question - one that had me wondering when I first got here - "What are all these penguins wandering around the place" ?
And BTW - I have no idea in this is an accurate statement - but if you are from Lisbon, that would probably make you the first - perhaps someone else can comment on that if they know otherwise.....
Penguin status is awarded (rewarded..?) based on the nmber of posts you make - the higher the posts, the higher the bird.
Keep posting to 'advance' !

All species of penguin.
Emperor Penguins are so called because they are the largest of the species. They can survive in some of the coldest climates on earth.
The King Penguin is the second largest penguin species.
Adelie penguins were named after the wife of a French explorer in the 1830s.
Gentoo is from gentio, meaning heathen, and from Hindoo, meaning "Hindustan".
Chinstrap penguins got their name from the thin curved line of black feathers running under the chin.
Rockhoppers get their name because they hop over rocks and crevices on the shores where they live.
The Macaroni penguin was named by the early English explorers. In the mid 18th century, a young man who wore flashy feathers in his hat was called a "Macaroni". This is also the origin for the words to "Yankee Doodle" sung during the Revolutionary War to poke fun at the poorly dressed Continental Army.
Subject: Re: OK,OK, I'll ask...
I believe Royals are named the same as Macaroni.
The erect-crested penguins have long, silky feathers that stand straight. This spiky, brush like feathers grow from the base of the bill to the top of the head giving this penguin a distinct look.
Snares Island Penguins nest only on Snares Island, off the southern coast of South Island, New Zealand. They are closely related to the Fiord land penguins.
Fiordland Crested Penguins are so called for obvious reasons, they live in fjordland and they are crested.
The Magellanic Penguin penguin was named after Ferdinand Magellan who first saw them in 1519 on his first voyage around the tip of South America.
The Humboldt penguin is often called the Peruvian penguin, although they are also found in Chile. It is found on the rugged coast and offshore islands of Chile and Peru. The name Humboldt came from the early European explorer that first saw these animals.
The African Penguin can be found in various regions of South Africa.
Galapagos penguins are found on the Galapagos Islands and on Isabela Island just north of the Equator.
The Yellow-Eyed Penguin gets its name from the yellow-orange cat-like eyes. They also have a band of yellow feathers going from the bill and circling the eyes and head.
Little Penguins are the smallest of all the penguins standing only 16 to 17 inches tall (41 to 44 cm) and weighing only about 2 lbs. (1 kilogram). They are sometimes called the "Little Blue penguin", "Fairy penguin", and "Blue penguin"
That covers about all that I can find.

They already have. Just go down to your nearest chocolate biscuit store to check to what extent. Ohh, not THAT kind of Penguin.

After Chucky went to penguins, I switched my avatar to Tennessee Tuxedo, my favorite 1960's cartoon penguin.
Chucky said that there was a penguin invasion. If that is so, then maybe I should have chosen this for my avatar:

If there really were a penguin invasion, then death to penguins!

Why penguins? If you want the truth you should ask Langdon_Hughes....but if you ask me I say it's because they are the cutest damn things to ever walk the planet (with the exception of a few on this board..heheee ;))

Jonman IS crushed. As you can see he loves penguins.
The beginning:
See...
Once upon a time there was a cluster of bad phenomena, a group of beady-little-eyed things that threatedned to take over the messageboards. It had been rumored to be a conspiracy. They did...... they did!!! Penguins!!! they.... did... Beady eyes. :o :o :o
I'm sorry. Flashbacks, you know. I still have traumas.
Langdon Huges should be able to convey the story with a little more structure. ;)
Edited because Jonman reminded me we never really resolved the matter. Was it really penguins? Lang? ? ?

Yes he DOES!! In fact, if you are all scared of penguins and no longer want them...you could send them to MY house!
I'm a collector of all things penguin.....

The only thing that traumatized me were beady-little-eyes. In the dark or in the distance, I couldn't tell they were of penguins. That, the fact that it was penguins, I believe was only suggested. Then came mass hysteria! :o
Subject: Re: OK,OK, I'll ask...
Ok folks! You heard the man. :D All unwanted penguins to Jonman. :)
Subject: Re: OK,OK, I'll ask...
And isn't it also widely rumored that it was a penguin that hacked into the messageboards, almost destroying them, back in April?
Subject: Re: OK,OK, I'll ask...
OK, OK, I'll tell, but then I may have to kill you.
Some forget the Penguin Plague of '84. Some call it a hoax. Some call it an epidemic. Some call it George. We all almost called it quits...
Back in the early eighties, an enterprising young fashion designer was searching for a mascot. He imported several possibilities to his SoHo loft, but was disappointed by all of them. The lions hated plucking. Giraffes ate the dishtowels. Koalas are notorious divas and impossible to work with. The youth nearly dispaired of ever finding an animal who fully expressed the natural formality of his designs when suddenly he thought: Penguins!
Faster than Bob Mackey can string pearls, a dozen of the sweet little tuxedoes clowns were brought in and unleashed on an unsuspecting New York. How could we know that the "natural" state of your average penguin is a cross between a hairdresser, an advertising executive, and those guys from "Deliverance"? They quickly overran the town, forcibly redecorating, reappoltering and occassionally ravaging. They spread through the sewers, unleashing havoc wherever they went.
Our collective unconscious is the only reason we don't remember neon, pumpkin pants and George O'Dowd for the penguin signs of tyrrany they truly were. It was a dark time.
A team of Navy SEALS and polar bears finally returned our country to normalcy.
An interesting side note: while searching for his penguins in the sewers, the designer ran across a crocodile. Things looked grim for a moment, but a deal was struck, an agent was called, and a logo was relaunched...
Admit it. You missed me.
Subject: Re: OK,OK, I'll ask...
I admit it......I missed ya Langdon!!
Sheesh, you never fail to come up with the BEST penguin stories ever!!
And yes Hairspray, if you could direct the penguins to my place I'd be in your debt.....how can they have beady eyes? They're SO CUTE!!

Langdon,
Remember your past recounts of the story in which you too had witnessed "beady eyes"?
Jonman's making me feel sorry for the little things. :-[

Jonman,
Is this true? Do you even realize?
I'm weeping for penguins!!! :'(
Somebody SAVE ME.
Subject: Re: OK,OK, I'll ask...
I don't know if he's a victim. They could just be using his ID. They are smart....
Subject: Re: OK,OK, I'll ask...
Uh-oh. Souds like Jonman's been taken over to the Dark Side.
He's working for the penguins!!! :o ;) ;)
Subject: Re: OK,OK, I'll ask...
Maybe I'm one of YOU and I'm infiltrating them to find out how they tick so WE can take over THEM....
Or maybe I just love the cuddly, cute little buggers :D
Subject: Re: OK,OK, I'll ask...
So, do you all think that explains things? I think I am more confused now than before...
Thanks anyway though... Trinity.
