Subject: What Celeberties do you respect?

Written By: Screwball54 on 06/10/02 at 08:05 p.m.

O.K we had a Celeberties you hate column. but, what celeberties do you respect and why? A couple of mine are:

Michael J Fox - I don't think theres a movie he's been in that I have not liked. Also He's done a lot to bring awareness for Parkinsons Desiese.

Mel Brooks - Not because He supports a noble cause, but because I enjoy his movies.

George Foreman - Hard to explain, He just gives off the impression of being a fun person.

Arnold Shwartzenager - I Like his movies and respect his political views.

I respect Elton John.  His music is wonderful and he's always changing to keep up with the times.  Also, he's contributed much toward helping us all find a cure for AIDS.

I respect John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson and others who have participated in "Farm Aid" over the past few years.
I also respect Richard Pryor for his struggle with Parkinson's disease. And to a lesser extent, Michael J. Fox, just because his isn't yet full-blown. (I don't wish it on anyone.)

Dennis Leary.  Yes, he can be  very foul-mouthed at times, and most of the characters he plays are "bad guys".  He won my respect when his first movie came out and he had the premier shown, not in Hollywood, like everyone else does, but in his hometown, with a guest list full of the people who supported him before he became famous.  Since then he has done a lot for firefighter's relief funds, even before 9/11 (I think he has a brother or a cousin on the NYFD)

Freddy Mercury, and any other celebrities who have admited publicly they are/were living (and some dying) from AIDS.  It helped prove this disease can strike anyone, not just those targeted by hate.  And with this knowledge, people have learned how to prevent it, while we search for a cure.

Marilyn Monroe- Because she was smarter then everyone thought AND she showed you don't have to be a size 5 just to be beautiful.
2pac-He wrote beautiful poetry AND he wasn't as dumb as everyone thought he was.
and lots more......

So, for you to respect Michael J. Fox to the same degree as Richard Pryor, he has to be to the point of being wheelchair bound? ? ?

I'm sure MJF could definitely do without that kind of respect.  ::)

Also, Parkinson's is not a disease that becomes "full-blown" likes AIDS. Richard Pryor just happens to be older than Michael J. Fox and thus has lived with the disease longer.

Don't get too mad at my reply J.C. ....K  ;)

Oooh! Oooh! LA name drop! Kat, I had the fortune to meet Dennis Leary and he could not have been kinder, more respectful, nor more concerned about making me comfortable. Awesome individual.

I'd like to add Chris Rock, (got cojones and a sense of humor), Parker Posey (she's good and never panders... plus she always recognizes her roots), Harriet Harris, (did ANYONE watch the Tonys?), and Shirley MacLaine, (yes, she's out there, but she's still here.)

Jackie Chan - the fact that he does his own stunts and has great fighting scenes.  He's the Bruce Lee of the 90s/00s

Olivia Newton John for her stand on animal rights.

Shania Twain for starting off with nothing, losing her parents and having to raise her brothers and sisters by herself.  I hate country music but I still respect her.

Audrey Hepburn for UNICEF, helping children in Latin America and Africa.

Charlton Heston. His presidency of the NRA doesn't make him the most popular man in Hollywood, but he still stands up for his beliefs.

George W Bush.  I don't know if he counts as a celebrity, but it is hard for me not to respect a man who has the cojones to come right out and quote the bible on national tv.  He isn't afraid to admit he is a Christian, yet he doesn't push it on the rest of the country.  He also handled the revelation of his drunk driving charge (what 25 years ago ::)) with dignity...he didn't blame anyone for leaking it, he said he did wrong.  You don't find someone who will take the blame in politics very often.

I respect Elizabeth Taylor for her tireless work to help find a cure for Aids and to change people's attitudes about those who suffer from it.

I also respected Audrey Hepburn for her amazing work to help starving and malnourished children around the world for UNICEF. I respect Sally Struthers for the same reason.

Mark King because of his bass-playing skills :) in fact I admire all of level 42 because they worked hard in the 80s and even though they didn't get enough credit as they should have done, they kept making great music :)

Shania Twain because she started out with nothing and lost her parents but became a great country artist

Audrey Hepburn for her work with UNICEF

And some more......

There are a lot of celebs I respect, and I'm just too lazy to write them all (or even just a few) right now. ::)

elton john/bernie taupin...for making some of the most beautiful music ever.

susan sarandon...beautiful, talented, intelligent and i've never seen a movie of hers that i didn't like.

samuel l. jackson...one of my favorite actors because he can play a thug or a jedi easy as cake.  i like versatility in an actor.

tori amos...she's a muse to me--a fount of inspiration in music, poetry and life.  she helped me through some tough times.  and her own tough times have produced awesome music and the RAINN foundation for those who've suffered rape, abuse or incest.

mel brooks...that man just makes me laugh.  reverend!!!

george w. bush...although i may not agree with his policies, or any president's policies, i have to respect anyone brave enough to take on the responsibility of the presidency.

kevyn aucoin...not really a celebrity, but he was a well known hollywood make-up artist and has published some books on his trade.  he found beauty in every person he ever made over and had a vision of making a more beautiful world with kindness and compassion.  in may, he passed from this world.  may he rest in peace.

Right now, I'd say David Beckham: a bit clichéd, but his dedication and workrate for the England team this last couple of years has been outstanding, and his attitude exemplary (especially for a footballer!).  Compare that to four years ago, when his petulant childishness caused ejection from the World Cup - then he'd have been on my "most hated celebrity" list :-)

Truly spoken Philbo - and I'm a Leeds Man, so you can imagine how hard it is for me to say "He's Grown Up"...

I'm a Wycombe Wanderers man, myself - and what I've enjoyed most about Beckham's recent performances is that he seems to have given so much more for England than he did for United ;-)

I respect all celebrities for the pure fact that they can put up with their label of celebrity status. I think that a lot of them manage to keep with it despite their label given to them by the general public.
