I've never understood that expression.  It's not a monkey.  It doesn't even look like a monkey.  It doesn't even throw poop.  And spanking it?  That certainly doesn't seem like spanking to me.  I was never spanked like that while growing up.  Makes me wish I'd been born a monkey, they get spanked better...
