Subject: Do you think it is okay?

Written By: Alicia. on 05/29/02 at 05:54 p.m.

I just wanted to know if you people think it is allright for a girl to be obsessed with the figure of the female body. Because I love to draw (like Marilyn Monroe nude or Bettie Page because they have very good shapes) I really love drawing the female body. Now don't think that I am a you know....because I'm not. But I asked my friends and they think that it is gross when I draw stuff like that. I tell them that it is art but they just don't understand. What do you think? Do you think it is wrong for me to be drawing that stuff?

There is nothing wrong with drawing someone that you idolize naked. But if that obsession draws you into doing something harmful, like O.D.-ing on barbiturates, it's probably time you find a safer hobby. I would hate it if that were to happen to you. :-/

It's just art. There is nothing wrong with it at all.  Tell your friends that.

http://sassy_elj.homestead.com/files/tinyglitter.gifGirl there is absolutley nothing wrong with that. I am the same way, and believe me it doesn't matter what others think. Beauty is something real important not just physically but emotionally too. I always say that everyone has some kind of beauty...I think Marylin Monroe was so beutiful that it was almost too perfect, don't you think? Well, you shouldn't be afraid of what others say about you just as long as you know who you are. And if that makes you happy, then its really okay.

Not only is there nothing wrong with it, it's fabulous. Any good women's fashion designer, makeup artist, stylist etc. begins with a fascination with what is feminine and what constitutes beauty. Once you can identify that, you might start creating art that is not only expressive, but helps other women achieve a certain ideal. Even if you don't go further with it, it's a wonderful thing to affirm your own ideal of beauty instead of conforming to "Cosmo's" model/bullemic of the moment.

Also, good for you for knowing that attraction comes in all forms, not just sexual. Tell your friends that their panties are too tight.

I think Marilyn Monroe did have a nice figure and I can definitely see drawing her being a lot more fun than drawing a stick figure. Darn "Twiggy".  ::) >:( :P ;)

Oh, and nothing wrong with appreciating beauty in all shapes and forms (except "Twiggy" :P).   ;D ;)

I don't think there is anything wrong with it at all.

I think women are just naturally more beautiful than men in general.  There are always exceptions, and what my idea of beautiful is, may not be the same thing for you.

As for drawing them in the nude, don't let that bother you, either.  When my cousin decided he wanted to draw comics for a living, he found it was a lot easier to draw a woman than a man; and easier to draw her nude.  He could never seem to get the blouse to look right, and he could not do shoes at all.

He's older now, and manages a restaurant instead of drawing comics, but he still draws because the act of creating something beautiful relaxes him, and cheers him up after a rough day.

Do you think maybe your friends are just a tiny bit jealous?  That you can draw such beautiful images better than them?  Sometimes people say mean things out of envy, without realizing they may be hurting your feelings.

Just keep on drawing and don't pay attention to what the other kids say. There are a lot of female artists out there and they began just as you did. Plus, should you decide to take formal classes in figure drawing at a University or Arts college, you'll definitely have to get used to the nude figure - male and female.

Not at all.

Just a note of explaination: My original post got deleted when I accidentally hit the "remove" button. I was going to add Alicia's quote to give my response some context... after I read it, it could have been interpreted differently that I meant it.

That's OK, WL! I realized I hadn't even answered the darn-tootin' question. So I modified to add an answer too.  ::)

Heck, your friends are probably jealous because you have talent!  There is nothing wrong with drawing members of the same sex- as a matter of fact, classes are taught all the time that use models-male and female- to help with capturing the anatomy somewhat true-to-life (Unless you are Picasso, of course! Then your MM would be blue, have either one breast or thirty, have one blue eye like Cyclops, and a butt that has a sh*t-eating grin plastered on it, depending on which way the wind blows that day.) I have taken these classes, and believe me- I would rather draw MM than some of the Shreks that they want us to draw. Tell your friends to go bite, and continue to utilize your talent.  Your friends sound like they have way too much time on their hands-maybe getting them a box of Crayolas will help.

Just my opinion, of course! :D

There's absolutely nothing wrong with drawing the female form.  I am completely straight, and I still think some women are absolutely beautiful.  A woman's body is an awesome temple, so it makes perfect sense to me that you would want to capture that beauty on paper.  So, keep on doing what you're doing and tell your friends to zip their lips.

yeah I think it is okay, everyone has said what I wanted to say but I still think it is okay to do that, it is just art.

I say draw what you want to---don't let your talent go to waste.  The female form (and male) has been used for centuries by many famous artist's.  I think it is totally natural.   Hey, if you ever become a famous artist who do you think will come knocking on your door.  LOL

yes, Yes, YES it's o.k. to draw, view and enjoy the naked human form, either gender.  if i could draw, i probably would draw women and men, naked and clothed, etc.  but, alas, i have no such talent and must look at what others have created.  i also think that it's important to discover beauty in nudity because it helps us appreciate our own human form as well as others.  and i'm really glad you asked us...that's what impressed me most about this thread--that you had the courage to ask a question about what some would consider a 'taboo' or 'touchy' subject.  bravo to you, alicia!!  you've grown very much since you first joined us.  :D

It's actually been proven that the female form is the perfect form of the human body. It has something to do with that extra little bit on the chromosomes. Female bodies are beautiful; they also look great in art because they are graceful and curved. Males look blocky and angular. Draw whatever you like. Don't bother what people think. I don't.
