Subject: What is the best city to live in?

Written By: randbfan23 on 05/22/02 at 00:55 a.m.

Population wise, weather, humidity, and cities with clean air.
What city would everyone like to live in full-time, or even visit for a long period of time.  Also what is someone's favorite vacation spot, and if you enjoyed the place enough, would you like to live there.

If I could choose A place It would be Spokane, Washington I have a lot of family in that area(Northern Idaho/Eastern Washington), and the air is clean, But I haven't been there since I was about 5 years old.  Portland or Seatle would be ok two.

Well, I'm partial to my old hometown of Akron, Ohio. The air is really clean there since the 80s when they shut down all the factories. Course, nobody has a job anymore... ;D

I also wouldn't mind living in Tampa, Florida. Right on the gulf of course. Dream on....

I have several cities I still want to visit, but for the reasons Randbfan stated, I wouldn't want to live anywhere but Indianapolis. Plus it's the best sports town in the United States, with apologies to New York and Florida team fans. ;)

Another vote for Spokane.  I've always been partial to the Pacific Northwest.  My husband's from Idaho, which is a really nice area.  It's clean and you've got the mountains all around you.  Maybe one day I'll get back to that part of the world... :-/

Myself I would love to visit Australia, and maybe if I enjoyed visiting there enough, I would like to live there for a long period of time, I love the accents, and I heard the climate is really nice.  And because I would love to be out in the open every once in a while and think about things.

One place I would like to live in other than Colorado is Alaska.
I just love the change every 6 months, from light one half of the year to night the other half, I also love to fish, whenever I would get a chance, that is something I have not done in a while, and that would be a plus.

And New York, because I have heard good things.

That's a nice thought, randbfan23 ....... we would welcome you, accents and all....

A couple of thoughts on what you have written though :

Australia's a big place, although with a lot less people.  Re the space issue, there is a very good reason why 95% of it's population live within 100 kilometres (60 miles) of the coastline.

Which leads me to wonder :

"What, you don't got no 'out in the open' where you are" ?  :)

I was under the impression Colorado was a pretty big state...?

The climate is variable though.  I suspect people tend to think of Australia as a hot place, and in summer, somrtimes the heat and humidity can just about melt you.

But at the moment, some of the southern states have been getting snow, and even where I live, Queensland, which is marketed as the 'Sunshine State', it may be sunny, but it's freakin' freezing !

Where I live right now (Castroville, California). Well, the city that I live in sucks, but where it's located is perfect. The weather is fairly nice, the air is actually clean, the ocean isn't that far from where I live, and we are about 10 miles away from the beautiful Monterey Peninsula.

I've never lived anywhere else but Boston.  There are several other cities (Cambridge, Somerville, & Newton) that are "right next door" that I would also consider, simply because I shop there all the time, or visit friened who already live there.

I'd love to travel more, and I would like to have an extended stay in Toronto.  Friends who have visited have raved about what a cool place it is, and at least one of my favorite tv shows was filmed there, so I have an idea what it looks like.

I'm also dying to visit New Orleans, San Francisco, Seattle and Kuala Lumpur.

Great topic!

Well, this is tough since I haven't traveled much during my lifetime.  As an avid Newhart fan, I'm leaning towards Vermont.  I've never been there, and I've only seen pictures of the place, but from what I've heard it's quite serene and breathtaking.  I'm a city gal, but I appreciate small towns and rural settings.

Kat, I noticed you listed New Orleans as one of the cities where you wanted to travel.  I live close to NO, and I go there all the time.  It's rich in culture and tradition.  I would recommend coming down here for sure.  I would wait until October, though, it gets SO hot down here during the summertime.  The heat makes it hard to enjoy walking around the French Quarter or the Zoo.  I'm not a big partier, so I don't frequent the Quarter at night...it's a lil' too dangerous.

Well, I would definitely be waiting untill fall/winter to travel to the southern USA.  Not only is it cooler (similar to my summer, I'm guessing) but it is also much easier for me to get vacation time in the "off-season".

I'm sure most cities have an area that would be a little too dangerous at night.  I wouldn't be going out "wandering" unless I was with someone who lives there.

Thanks for the recommendation and tip!

The best city to live in, for me, is wherever I am living at the moment- in my case, Griffith, Indiana!

Well, I live in NW Washington (about 2 hrs North of Seattle), and I like it here.  Sure, it gets rainy sometimes..(though not as much as people seem to think, IMO!) We lived in Florida for awhile, but I'd never like to stay there.  My in-laws live in St Petersburg/Tampa, and it is pretty, but I couldn't live in that heat and humidity 24-7.  Two weeks in the springtime for a visit is plenty!  (For me, anyway..hubby would greatly disagree!).  I also have family in western Colorado, and that seems like a real nice place.  Also family in Northeastern Ohio...I haven't been there in ages, but I remember really enjoying it as a kid.
Well, I guess now that we've all played "Where's Waldo" with Marci.. ;) I'd have to say I really like it right here.  Is it the best place to live in all the world?  I think that is a totally personal opinion, and everyone has their own version/interpretation of "perfection"--but is it perfect for me?  Yeah, I think so.  :)

Wow. Wow wow wow wow wow. I'm from the Pacific Northwest and if I had to live there again year-round I think I'd shriek and bleed out my eyes. Give me sunshine.

I'm loving Los Angeles right now, but it is dirty. San Diego maybe? Malibu if I had the cash.

Can't afford to live in NY again, but it was nice when I was there.

I think I could stand to live in Colorado if the winters weren't so cold. The blood has thinned, boys and girls. To bad the rest hasn't.

Hey kids, I dug this up from way back and thought we got some newbies here, lets see what they say.
I was surprised to see Spokane, WA. mentioned on here twice, its a nice city in the summer but cold in the winter.  I of course have to say Seattle and I can tell you why.  Mountian ranges on either side, lots of coastline thought here and Lake Washington on the other side of town. Not to hot in the summer or cold in the winter.  The city is beautiful, green trees everywhere.  The poplulation is way more friendly than most major cities.  And we have hills, everywhere.  I'm amazed when I visit other cities and that don't have water front or hill.
Place that I've visited that I'd least like to live in- Oklahoma City. :P

I have heard that about Seattle and that is why I would choose it as #1, Race. I had the opportunity to transfer there for my occupation, but unfortunately it didn't work out. I like that where I live is safer for my children (small town) but I hate the inconvenience of being so far away from everything I like. I miss my hometown of Lawrence Ks. Home of the Hawks...yes it is still Kansas but it is soooo different from where I am now (definitely because KU is located there).

Sorry, guys, Seattle's out for me.  It's beautiful, but...
Too much rain!!!!   :(As I have naturally curly hair that frizzes in the rain, I would look like an electrocuted poodle almost every day.

I would have to say Dallas, TX.  My brother and his wife live down there & I went to college down there my first year.  It gets hot, but it's dry heat.  After living in Chicago, anywhere that is not humid in the summer and sub-arctic in the winter sounds pretty good to me. :D

I have lived many, many places in my day. I have to say that I don't like cities. I don't mind visiting them once in a while because they do have so much to offer in terms of theatre, museams, etc. But for living, I perfer a small town but they have their problems too. Small town, small mind. I have seen it all too often. But it is quiet at night. In the summer you can hear the crickets chirping.

I've been to quite a few places so far.  U.S. cities that I really liked were Boston, San Francisco, and San Diego.  Although, I went to Denver this summer for the first time, and I loved it.

I would say public transportation is a big issue for me.  I lived in London for 3 months and I loved taking the tube.  I was lucky enough to work close enough to walk to my place of employment, so that meant I didn't have to ride it during rush hours.  Nonetheless, it was a BIG change from Phoenix where you have to drive everywhere.  When I left the UK and got home, I realized how much I hated driving and freeway traffic.

European cities that I wanted to go to, but never had the chance yet are Oslo, Stockholm, and Zurich.  Anyone on this board from any of those places?  I've ony heard good things about these cities...

I'd really like to go to Australia and New Zealand too.  In London, I saw a Crowded House cover band, that's as close as I got.  I did meet an Austrailan woman there though that was from Hamilton and we had a cool conversation about Aussie Rules Football.

I have to say Atlanta or actually a city just south of Altanta called Peachtree City or also know as the "Golf Cart Capital of the World" with just about everyone who lives there has a golf cart cause you can get anywhere in town using the golf cart.  They even have golf cart parking places at shopping centers and other stores so people can park their golf cart.  Even the High schools have golf cart parking lots.  The weather is great there can get a little humid there sometimes but other than that you cant ask for much better weather than there is there.  Its a great place to raise kids with the tops school system in the state of Georgia and probably one of the top in the country.  Great sports programs not only in little league type sports but high school sports to McIntosh High School in Peachtree City their girls soccer team has been either #1 or #2 ranked in the country for several years.  And its crime rate is extremely low.  In my opinion out of every place i have lived or visited i have yet to find one beat out Peachtree City.

I spent a few months living in Kenai, Alaska.  Pretty amazing up there in many ways, I got there early April and left in June.  The sun would set about 20 minutes later every night to the point where it never quite went down all the way.  At midnight people would be mowing the lawn and kids playing on the swing-sets.  I also met some great people, they were a tough lot but very friendly and it's a real community cause it's part of surviving.  I'm afraid I could never do a winter there thought, they have the long days in the summer, in the winter they have the highest suicide rate in the country.

I didn't bring up New Orleans in my earlier post, but it's a very cool city.  I went there one weekend a few years ago and had a blast.  It wasn't during Mardi Gras, but it was a hell of a good time.

The coolest thing I saw was this jazz band playing, these guys were probably in their 70's and they were rockin out.  There was a huge crowd outside the bar on Bourbon Street. It was awesome.

May I just preface my reply by saying that I hate cities. I reckon that anywhere that the population has to be controlled with three lights coloured red, green and amber is way too big.

I will also add that - for the past two years in a row - some international committee has voted Melbourne, Australia as the world's most liveable city. From someone who lives near there and spends a great deal of time in Melbourne: what were they smoking and where can I get some?

Having gotten that off my chest, there are some places around the globe that I felt very comfortable with for various reasons. They are:

Perth, Western Australia; Launceston, Tasmania; Edinburgh, Scotland; Zurich, Switzerland; Munich, Germany; Flagstaff Arizona; Wellington, NZ and Wheeling, West Virginia.

Like alot of other people in this thread, I too have my sights on New Orleans. I hope to get there whilst I'm still young enough to drink that much bourbon that I won't remember a thing about the place (arrrgghh: flashback to Vienna!).

One thing I have seen from the limited traveling I've done is that there is no place else like Southern California 8) I hated LA though :P , but the southern cities of Orange County are the best places to live if you're middleclass to poor and like clean-looking cities with some of the lowest crime-rates in the country. I really liked it over there. Presently, I  live 1 hour away from it, but here in San Diego it's like Shelbyville. Even the tv channels are screwy and I've still to get used to this locale even though it's 5 miles away from the ocean :( Oh yeah :D ! The rent is kind of restrictive (I'm a student, so anything requiring money is restrictive). It's a very clean area though. No worries about people stealing your stuff - and I've left the doors of my automobile unlocked a bunch of times, not to mention the window of our kitchen is always open (go ahead and brake in! I did two recruiting trips to Las Cruces and it's pretty cool down there.  We looked at some house for the hell of it and nice homes for a third of what they cost in Seattle.  Also you have the drive in liquor store, gas, alcohol, food, tobacco was so much cheaper.  We took a spin up to the mountians and very nice.  The only thing I could't handle there would be lack of water front.  I need water.

Yeah, Las Cruces is really a wonderful place to be.  I like having the mountains close enough to visit but not actually have to live in them.  Unfortunately, my husband also needs to be near the water and he is waging a campaign to get me to move back to Florida.  I just really really didn't like Florida so a move to NC may be in our future but not as long as I can dig my heels in and stay. :D

They did close down the drive-in liquor stores though.  Apparently, there was a big problem with drinking and driving.
Hmmm...imagine that.

Little Las Cruces is going through a growth spurt right now and I'm not sure that I really like the thought of my cozy hometown going metropolitan.  But, growth is progress is it not?

I'm sorry to hear about the drive throughs being shut down, I liked it.  I was also amazed to find out that it was the 2nd largest city in NM, cause it ins't that big.  I had a couple of good nights there and wouldn't mind passing through again.

For me, I think Phoenix AZ is a great city to live in.  I lived there for 15 years, and didn't realize how much I missed it until I went back for my high school reunion.  Sunny 300+ days a year, hot but not humid, easy to get around (the city & burbs are laid out on a grid) and the cost of living is affordable.  If you want to see snow, just drive a few hours north to Flagstaff in the winter.  I'm trying to get back there in the next year or so.  Going in a few weeks to visit my brother and friends.  Yay! :D

I knew someone from AZ that had a tee shirt that had two skeletons on lounge chairs in the desert with cocktails next to them. It said, "Yeah, but it is a DRY heat."

It is, Cat.  I was there in July 2000 and it was 110F outside and it felt great!  Sunscreen, lots of water and trips to the pool make it tolerable.  Clear blue skies rule.  And the sunsets are pretty too.

I know, hard to believe that we are the 2nd largest city.  Right now you can drive cross-town in about 10 minutes.  That's why the thought of so much growth is a little disconcerting.  Like I said before, this is a great place and I'll stay as long as I can.  There's something very "grounding" about being here.  I was born in Albuquerque and maybe having the mountains around as a visual point is what makes me feel that way, but get me in the flat open spaces and I'm completely lost!!  I can't tell you East from West when I'm not here.  :)  My husband thinks that's the weirdest thing but it's the truth.

I think that's what does it for me and Phoenix.  I had a mountain in my backyard when I left and I just miss that scenery.  My brother lives less than a mile from our old house, and he has the same mountain behind him.  :)

We have some friends who are going to be moving to Phoenix soon and they can't wait to get there.  They are trying to recruit us too but I just love it here.

If you don't move there you can drive there in a day.  :)

We have some friends who are currently residing in Great Falls MT that may end up in Phoenix as well.  That would be nice, esp. for Mrs. M since she doesn't know very many people there (not that I do anymore)...

3 more weeks!  3 more weeks!   :D :D :D

I've never lived anywhere else but Boston.  There are several other cities (Cambridge, Somerville, & Newton) that are "right next door" that I would also consider, simply because I shop there all the time, or visit friened who already live there.

funny.. if you ask someone like me who grew up in Worcester, anything east of Rt. 128 is Boston.. so I always get a kick out of people who refer to Cambridge as a seperate city.. though I guess with the communist leanings, it's more like a seperate country.. I guess I'm starting to recognize them as seperate places now since I work on the Slumaville/People's Republic of Cambridge town line..

That's what I figure.  It's not a bad trip to make just have to make sure the A/C is working if we go in the
summertime. :)

I've actually had several people mention moving to Phoenix lately.  Must be the new "hot" place to be.  No pun intended. ;D

I live in Phoenix and it is a warm place, almost 80 degrees today, summertime weather most places, but January weather here.  The hottest I remember it getting was 122 one summer.

The population growth here is enormous.  It's a nice play to live with many things to do.  Northern Arizona is beautiful, I'd love to live in Flagstaff, but there's just not a big job market up there.

Now see, that 122 degrees is just not right.  That's way too hot for me.  And as for having 80 degree weather in January, I like having seasons.  I don't like the wind we get here in the spring but I love the fall weather and for it to get cool enough to build a fire in the stove and curling up with a cup of hot tea and a good book on rainy days.  I just don't see that happening in Phoenix.  No seasons is part of the reason I didn't like Florida.  That and the snowbirds. :)

Thats what i like about North Georgia cause in the summer it will be in 80s and 90s and in the winter it will be in the 40s and 50s, and sometimes colder like recently.

I am happiest when the temperature is below 70 degrees F (or ~25 C).  That's why I'm down with Toronto ;)

I spent a couple years back East for school and really liked the season changes.  When I was back there, everyone asked me why I'd want to leave a nice place like Phoenix!  I couldn't win either way.  Arizona has snowbirds galore too, it sometimes turns driving into quite an adventure...

I will stick with Georgia or North Carolina (where i am orginally from) cause the southwest is alittle to warm for me and to dry i like rainy weather.  I know its strange but i do.
