I love Stephen King. The most recent one I have is The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. Great book! Most of his new stuff is kinda boring...maybe I have desensitized myself to his horror. Then again there is Bag of Bones which still creeps me out. As for Anne Rice. I loved the Vampire series up until Queen of the Damned. I haven't read any of them since...guess I just got bored with it.

The only Steven King novel I've read was Pet Sematary. I enjoyed it quite a bit. I've read some of his older short story collections, and I was a bit disappointed, most of them were not very good, or very scary. I have a couple of other novels, including It hanging around the house, but I just haven't had time to start reading it yet. Most of my friends have assured me that the full-length novels are better than the short stories, so I'm confident I'll like them.
I have read all of Ann Rice's books, including the "naughty" ones she wrote under a pseudonym. I love the vampire series, but I thought The Tale of the Body Thief, which comes right after Queen of the Damned was just....missing....something. The vampire novels that come after that are much better, even the ones that Lestat is not in. The newest one is called Blood and Gold.
I do wish she would do more with the Mayfair Witches, that one scared me more than the vampires did. In fact I found the vampires more sensual than scary.
I do love scary books and scary movies, but most "horror" films these days are just "slasher" films, with too much emphasis on the blood and guts, and not enough on the "horror" stuff. And my apologies to everyone who liked it, but I thought "The Blair Witch Project" was just lame. It did not scare me at all. (Older films, like Psycho, The Birds, and Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte do scare me :o ).

No worries there I don't think. ;)

Wow...if this isn't kismet...I was just thinking about postimg both of these topics!
I have read all of Stephen King's books, with the exception of the "Dark Towers" series...which I will probably start pretty soon. (I work in a library...they are easy for me to come by...)
I just finished his latest short story anthology...pretty good stuff!
I sometimes get a little tired of him, but not really enough for me to actually stop reading him...he has the most creative mind I have ever come across...Stephen King still has the power to hold me spellbound, without cranking out a "formula" type book. James Patterson is guilty of this, IMHO.
As for Anne Rice, ditto. Read everything she has ever writte, as a matter of fact..athough I think she sometimes gets a little bit overzealous in her decriptions of same-gender lovemaking...I think she is a bit obsessed by it. Her son is a very good writer, also...but again, the gay love thing comes shining through...
Not that there is anything wrong with that...just keeps popping out at me, that's all.
I skip over most love scenes in books...I know how it's done!
I agree with the Mayfair Witch saga not going far enough...I want more!

Years ago, I couldn't hardly wait to read the next Stephen King novel but the last couple that I have read have or tried to read (Dreamcatcher and Black House) have been strange, even for him. I couldn't even finish Black House. The only one that ever gave me the creeps was Pet Semetary. That's was one that I wouldn't read again, even now. I've read a couple of Anne Rice's novel but not in quite a while.

i really enjoy stephen king's work, however, the last one i read was 'dreamcatcher' and i really didn't like the ending...it seemed to cop out to me. i love the 'dark tower' series...i've read all of the ones out (so far) twice. i love roland's world. i can't wait for the next ones. i got side tracked when i was reading 'insomnia' and never finished it...it was due to school, not the book itself. the one that scared the pants off of me...'desperation'...i would stay up reading until 4 a.m. just to find a 'safe spot' to stop.
i haven't read much of anne rice's work...only the mayfair series. i did like her writing very much and i, too, wish she would do more with that series.

I read DarkHalf again. very evil. I liked it. again.

Without a doubt, The Shining. Only book I ever read that scared the hell out of me. I remember reading it alone one night, and was at one of the more frightening parts. Midway through it, all tensed up, my mother walks into the room and says "hi." Man, did I scream...

Never read anything by him, but I might this summer, if you guys could tell me what you would suggest by him to a 13 year old? (I dont get too scared by books, just movies).. anything I would enjoy?
Subject: Re: Steven King
My favorite by him is still the books he wrote under the name Richard Bachman, My favorite is "The Running Man" The movie sucked! but I dont think that it can be remade since 9/11... the ending is too close. For some reason his recent stuff just does not scare me like his earlier stories...
Anyone like Kings short stories?
The fog got to me, pretty damn creepy!
