Subject: unusual places lyrics

Written By: Zella on 05/10/02 at 01:10 p.m.

Couldn't put this one "in the 70s" as it spans 3 decades.

The following three unusual places appear in three songs, one from the 60s, one from the 70s and one from the 80s (not neccessarily in that order ;) ) Identify the 3 songs...

1. Baton Rouge

2. Cuyahoga Falls

3. Gatlinburg

I know this is not right, but the first thing I thought of for #1 is the Animaniacs' song about the state capitals.

Sung to the tune of "Turkey In The Straw", it starts out:

"Baton Rouge, Louisiana,
Indianapolis, Indiana,
and Columbus is the Capital of Oh-Hi-O"

If anyone wants the rest just IM me.

You probably didn't have this one in mind, but Baton Rouge is mentioned in "Calling Baton Rouge" by the Oak Ridge Boys.

I don't know what #3 is, but #2 is "My City Was Gone" by the Pretenders.  ;)

I believe Baton Rouge is mentioned in "Me And Bobby McGee"...by Janis Joplin.  However, Lester mentions another song altogether.  It looks like this one is in more than one song!  ;)

For what it's worth, it's one that I had in mind! Or one like I had in mind...is that the same one that Garth Brooks did?  I actually kind of liked that song, so if it's a different one altogether, apparently Baton Rouge is a popular place to sing about!  :D

Yep, same song. Brooks' cover wasn't bad, but I still prefer the original.

You got #2 correct, which takes care of the 80s song. I assume your Oak Ridge Boys was in the 80s? The song I am thinking of with Baton Rouge is from the 70s. It was not a "hit," but it got a fair amount of airplay on AM radio.

I had to play with that one awhile, but you are absolutely right; it starts out "Busted flat in Baton Rouge.." So there is still a third song, as no one has gotten the one I knew. Incidentally, the song I am thinking of also mentions New Orleans, as does "Bobby McGee." Guess it's obligatory to mention New Orleans in a song that also says Baton Rouge! ;)

As for "Gatlinburg," there is a connection between the song that mentions Gatlinburg, and one of the songs in my "unusual lyrics triple play" on the 70s board. Extra points to whoever gets both the song and identifies the connection. (Er...virtual Madeline is tallying the points, eh Fuss?) ;)

Isn't there a song that goes "from Boston to Baton Rouge". Or is that a commercial jingle? :-/

#1- "Wanted Man - Nick Cave and the Seeds
#3-"A Boy Named Sue" - Johnny Cash

I don't know about any your connection, but I find it somewhat amusing that Johnny Cash also did a song called "Wanted Man".

Hmmm... that makes four songs then that mention Baton Rouge. The one I am thinking of is still from the 70s. It didn't get any newer.  :D

Anyone still want to try for the connection? Or shall I answer all and close this thread?

For Baton Rouge, I nominate a 1950's Chuck Berry (hint, hint) song that was recorded by Linda Ronstadt in the 1970's called "Back in the USA."  Detroit, Chicago, Chattanooga, Baton Rouge…

Wow, this thread has become a giant "Baton Rouge" magnet!

Okay, Crazydon, can you come up with a song that names "Charleston?"  :D (I do know one, but it's veeeery obscure) :)

OK, How about #1- "Memory Motel" by the Rolling Stones? Which is somewhat related to the Rolling Stone reference by Dr. Hook?

Hey Banasy, that's clever! I had completely forgotten that Memory Motel mentions Baton Rouge! And I even heard it a week ago on VH1 classic. I guess Baton Rouge was far from an "unusual place lyric" since we've now id'ed four or five songs with the word, and I'm still thinking of yet another one!

The connection I was actually referring to was between "A Boy Named Sue" from this thread, and "Cover of the Rolling Stone" from the 70s thread; both were written by Shel Silverstien.

That still leaves a 70s song that mentions both Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Clue: the song also mentions "stale perfume."

And then there's Charleston.....
Clue: that song also mentions New Mexico.

Lady Marmalade- Patti Labelle?(To #1)

Well, two songs I know offhand that mention Charleston are referring to Charleston, SC.  One is "The Charleston" by Spike Jones.  The opening line is "Charleston, Charleston/Made in Carolina."  The other song is by Hootie & the Blowfish.  I can't think of it offhand, but since Hootie & the Blowfish are from South Carolina, they would sing of Charleston, SC.  And to my knowledge neither mention New Mexico.  Nor does "The Beat Goes On" by Sonny & Chér, of which one of the lines is "The Charleston was once the rage, uh-huh" but it doesn't mention New Mexico either…

Well, I've often wondered if the one I'm thinking of was referring to Charleston, WV, or Charleston, SC also. It's hard to tell when the only other place mentioned in the song is New Mexico! The song mentions a fake note. Now if you were going to leave a fake note, saying you had gone to Charleston, when you hadn't, which Charleston would you pick?  :D

Does that mention Baton Rouge too? Charleston? Cheap perfume? The only thing I can recall about that song was a kid in my junior-high French class going up to the teacher and asking her what "Voulez vous coucher avec moi, ce soir?" meant.  ;)

I just realized that I never did give the remaining answers to this one, and since it was only 4 pages back I know everyone was just dying of curiosity... ::)

Baton Rouge (the one I was thinking of  :-/ ) was "Delta Queen" by Don Fardon.

Charleston was in "Standing in the Rain" by the James Gang.
