Subject: Lucky dog's got more balls than most
Written By: Philip Eno on 07/30/09 at 2:58 pm
An Essex couple got a shock when they took their dog to the vet after he started to walk strangely.
It turned out poor old Bertie, owned by Mark and Michelle Jewell, had nine golf balls rattling around inside him, which he'd swallowed while out on his walks.
Veterinary worker Emily Nightingale told the Daily Telegraph that staff were "absolutely flabbergasted" when they saw the X-ray, which also revealed a bullet in the fat around Bertie's stomach.
"His stomach could have easily ruptured from the pressure of all the golf balls," she added, "which could have been fatal."
After the discovery, Bertie was rushed into surgery. After a two-hour operation to remove the golf balls and the bullet, he's now making a steady recovery.
It's not known how or when Bertie was shot, although Emily said the "brave little chappie" was very lucky that the bullet had missed his vital organs.
She added that dogs and cats often end up as gunshot victims "as a result of mistaken identity".
