Written By: Johnny_D on 08/28/06 at 10:52 am
I've just been invited to audition for a non-speaking role in one or more reenactment scenes in an upcoming PBS historic documentary.
I can't give out any more information at the present time ... stay tuned ... might have more info in September and October.

Excellent, my Thespian friend!
When the details come out, please pass on the info!
I'd love to point you out to my wife.
I'd also like to see what you're up to.
One other small point- if you hear of any auditions in California, let me know!

Amiright in assuming this has something to do with Lexington and Concord, or the Midnight Ride of William Dawes.

My screen-test/audition is scheduled for this afternoon. I don't know yet what type of non-speaking role they might consider me for ... it could be something as minor as a passer-by in a street scene, or something as major as a featured principle. Either way, it'll be non-speaking, in one or more historical reenactment scenes. My guess is that they'll probably have a narrator doing a voice-over, along with incidental music, when they put the documentary together for broadcast.

Either way, it'll be non-speaking, in one or more historical reenactment scenes. My guess is that they'll probably have a narrator doing a voice-over, along with incidental music, when they put the documentary together for broadcast.
The screen test and audition went very well. I sat in a chair at a large dark wood table, in the production room. There was a microphone to my left, and directly in front of me, across the room, sat the director and his production assistant. While the production assistant operated a video camera, the director asked me a few questions (my name, am I union or non-union, am I available on the shooting-dates, would I accept a role as a minor character if they cast other actors for the principles), and then he told me what he wanted to see.
First, they had me read a series of voice-overs. The director liked my first set of voice-overs, so he asked me to go to another page and pick another one, any one, my choice. I read the additional voice-over, and then the director asked me to act out a scene. I had to look angry but resigned, gather up papers scattered on the table, turn to my colleague (who I was to envision as sitting directly to my right), exchange a few words (silent pantomime speech) with him, shake his hand, then turn and walk off, displaying a controlled yet angry demeanor. After the first time I performed that scene, the director asked me to do it again, this time staying at the desk longer and taking more time to gather up the papers. I did the scene again as requested, they thanked me, and the screen test was concluded.
The documentary is scheduled for shooting in the first half of October, so I will find out pretty soon whether or not I've been cast.

I'd like to lead the Board in a Thespian's Prayer, for Johnny D:
***THESPIAN'S PRAYER***
May the Gods of Theatre raise my voice above the din of silence.
May my lines ring accurately, and true to script.
May the audience be spellbound by my portrayal.
May they laugh when I am funny, cry when I am tragic, and emotional when I am.
May the seat of my tights never split open, when I take a bow.
May I never flub a line, or make bodily noises when they aren't asked for.
May the world be filled with raving applause, when I take my bows.
***AMEN***

Thanks, Gis & bookmistress4ever. The director didn't say exactly when he'd let us know his decision, but it will probably be soon, considering his shooting schedule.

Do you know the name of the Senator from New York?
Not sure yet -- it might be New York Senator William W. Armstrong, or one of the other members of his eight-member committee that investigated the life insurance industry in 1905.

Yesterday, Wednesday October 11, Stuart Television Productions took over a section of the Massachusetts State House and shot numerous scenes of the upcoming PBS television documentary, Louis Brandeis: The People's Attorney. Among the scenes shot yesterday were the 4 that yours truly is featured in:
(1) Standing on the front steps of the State House chatting with a young woman as Louis Brandeis walks by;
(2) Escorting a young lady along the sidewalk across the street from the State House;
(3) Portraying New York State Senator William Armstrong (facing the camera!) presiding over Senate hearings investigating allegations of corruption in the insurance industry in 1905;
(4) Portraying New York State Senator William Armstrong (again facing the camera, yay!) gathering up his papers at the close of those Senate hearings in 1905, speaking briefly with Senator Charles Evan Hughes (played by a local professional actor), putting papers into a briefcase, standing up and walking out of the hearing chamber with an angry yet dignified demeanor.
That's it. The documentary will air on the PBS television network in March of 2007.
The director took a cast photo -- if I get a copy, I will post it where folks can see it.
Thanks for your support!
Johnny D / "William Armstrong"
P.S. --- If you click on the following link and then scroll down, you'll find a description of the documentary; however, the description on the following page says that the documentary will air on PBS in late 2006, which is not correct -- it will air in March of 2007:
