Subject: Broadway: Which One Does It For You?
Written By: HawkTheSlayer on 08/09/06 at 3:25 pm
The span of Broadway theatre goes far enough, that a poll on here would be next to impossible!
Therefore, I ask you: Which Broadway show is your ticket?
Are you into the Old School, such as "Porgy & Bess?"
Perhaps you are into the Traditional Actor's Plays, such as "Camelot".
Do you dig the scene that "Hair" produced?
Maybe you like the more experimental stuff, like "The Who's Tommy".
Enlighten us to what your favorite is, and why!

I haven't seen a Broadway show in so long which is really sad since my dad can get free tickets.
Maybe the next time in New York.
I LOVE Godspell and Annie...two that remind me of my childhood.

I saw Annie on Broadway, too-with Allison Smith (from Kate and Allie fame).

I saw it with Andrea McArtle. After seeing it I was convinced I was going to be the next Annie...that didn't happen. LOL!!

I know that there are some people who just can't get enough of that glitz & glamour!
It's so hard to pick just a few, isn't there, considering Broadway isn't in just America.
There's the London scene, the Paris scene, Japan, Australia...
Not to mention the Off-Broadway scenes!
Therefore, here is:
Hawk, the Slayer's Top 10 Favorite Broadway Musicals/Shows
10. The Scarlet Pimpernel (earlier piece, form the '60s, I think)
9. Camelot (I have the vinyl LP, w/Robert Goulet, Roddy McDowell, & Richard Burton
8. Big River (based off of Mark Twain's classic 'Tom Sawyer')
7. Chess (which spawned a classic '80s one-off: 'One Night In Bangkok', by Murray Head)
6. Into the Woods
5. The Who's Tommy
4. Phantom Of the Opera
3. The Rocky Horror Show (Yes, it was Broadway before it was a film)
2. Little Shop Of Horrors
AND! Hawk's Favorite Broadway Feature:
1. Les Miserables

1776
Evita
Cats (of course ;) )
Hair

Funny that you mention "Cats"-
I performed with a dancer in my Performance Show Choir, who later went on to be in "Cats", in NY.
Her name is Joyce Chittick.
The most flexible, and yet shortest dancer I've ever worked with. (Also beat everyone in belching...long story)
Her hair was so long, if she braided it, and you were her dance partner, Heaven help ya when she whipped her head, in a quick turn!
Many's the time I came home, with welts on my face, just from being beaten up by her hair!
BTW, i was also in a "Cats" medley- I was Old Deuteronomy.

Les Miserables the only one on this list I've seen. I took my wife & daughter to see it in San Francisco and it was great. They have both gone to see and totally love Wicked & Rent

I hope to see "Jekyll & Hyde" one of these days.
I have another old friend from my "Best of Broadway" days, who sung on the original soundtrack.
Her name's Grace Hotchkiss.

I love everything from the traditional to the off kilter.
*Rocky Horror was a London production before coming to Broadway where it tanked, unfortunately.*
Here are my faves!
Jesus Christ Superstar
Cabaret
Chicago
Annie
Dreamgirls (I am really hoping that the film adaptation is good!)
Porgy and Bess (ooh, Summertime still gives me chills)
Hair
Cats
Evita
Godspell
Grease
Bye Bye Birdie
and so on and so on and so on

I have not had the delight yet of visiting New York and seeing a broadway show...it is definitely something that I want to do though, very soon.

That's part of the beauty of it, Quirky...
You don't necessarily have to travel to NYC to see Broadway.
If you live in an area where Community Theatre is thriving, most will put on a Broadway or Broadway-styled show on at least once or twice a year.
If you live in a Metropolitan area known for casinos, such as Atlanta, Vegas, Reno, or Chicago, there are usually some sort of similar shows being done on a regular basis.
True, NYC is the cenosure of Broadway, but there is something to be said for off-Broadway, too!

I've seen some great shows in Pittsburgh (Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Joseph & The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat).

In that case I have recently seen;
Saturday Night Fever
We Will Rock You
Taboo
Chicago
Rocky Horror Show
Anything Goes
Crazy for You
Joseph.
Only the first two were in London, the rest were touring productions that came to Oxford.

I like the ones that were out when i was getting into it like Sweeney Todd...Chorus Line.
and I also like some old favorites like West Side Story, State Fair and Annie Get Your Gun
I really really don't like the idea of using a bunch of popular songs by an artist to string a story together..
they are stories themselves to me, anyway.
Cabaret, chicago, all good ones.

In that case, I suggest avoiding:
Working, by Studs Terkel
Runaways- this one appears to be almost all songs strung together
Caught In the Act, by Styx (Yes, this was actually billed as a Broadway-styled show, more than a concert)

funny enough...i LOVE "working" did some in college.
I was in a production of Runaways too.
he he...
now the STYX thing sounds awful.
hey, who am I to judge? I saw and liked Carrie the musical and Doonesbury!

Actually, I myself liked it...
What it did was use the story presented in "Kilroy Was Here", and parlayed it into a plausible story.
If you're not familiar w/KWH-
The story is set in the near future. Rock & roll has been outlawed and banned.
The figure behind this (played by James Young) is Dr. Everett Righteous, leader of the Majority For Musical Morality (MMM).
Together with his chief henchmen- Col. Hyde (the late John Panozzo) and Lt. Vanish (Chuck Panozzo),
they stage a takeover of the Government, and when in power, they sacrifice one of their own followers, by killing them in a rock concert, and framing famed rocker Robert Orin Charles Kilroy (played by Dennis deYoung). This allows them to totally ban R'n'R.
10 years later, society is changed. Human workers are replaced by Robotos- tireless, needing nothing but basic maintenance, and cheaper than human labor. Humans are shipped off to either Righteous's Army, or in cases like musicians, packed off to "Reform Institutes", or prisons.
Dr. Righteous now faces an underground threat- the mysterious Jonathan Chance (played by Tommy Shaw). He and a few pockets of humans who have escaped capture are determined to bring R'n'R back. Jonathan breaks into the main Prison Compound, where Kilroy is held. Chance then hacks into the TV Network, and replaces Righteous Broadcasting with outlawed footage of a rock concert.
Kilroy is inspired, and makes his escape by overpowering a Roboto, then disguising himself as one.
Moving about the city, Kilroy finds graffiti clues which lead him to the Paradise Theatre, now a museum about R'n'R music, and a warning to all who would defy the MMM. Jonathan Chance & Kilroy meet, and Kilroy recounts the story of what happened that fateful night.
At the end, Jonathan is given a special gift by Kilroy, before Kilroy leaves- his old guitar.
Jonathan tries it out, and becomes inspired to be the next voice of Rock Music.
Quite good, if you don't mind it being in semi-concert format.

K and I were in Runaways together. It was more song than dialogue...but the songs were not POP songs. I think that's the different.
CARRIE? Carrie the musical? When did that come and go and I had no idea. And you liked it? I just can't imagine such a thing. Bad enough they make movies out of King novels. (Or is there another "Carrie" that I'm unaware of?)

Nope- you've got it.
I think Ken Hill wrote that musical, just like he wrote the spoof version of "Phantom Of the Opera".
I saw that...apalling!
He took a classic, and turned it into Mad Magazine without the charm!
Dreadful trash!

FYI
I'm not too sure if many know that not only is there a movie database (which I'm sure everyone knows about), there is also a play database.
http://www.theatredb.com/
Unfortunately, it is not complete but it is a good start to doing research on shows.

I have checked out this database, and it's OK....depends on what you look for.
It seems to do better with play titles, rather than playwrights, which is how I usually do it.
