Subject: 1990s All Rap/Hip-Hop Thread

I am gonna start this one off with a track that is quite legendary here in Canada...

In 1989, Wesley Williams, better known as Maestro Fresh-Wes, released the single Let Your Backbone Slide .  In March of 1990, it peaked at #10 in Canada, went Gold and was the inspiration for the creation of a rap category at the Canadian Juno Awards.  It remained the best selling rap single in Canada by a Canadian artist until it was beat by Dangerous by Kardinal Offishall and Akon in 2008.

I was never the biggest rap fan, but this song is absolutely fantastic and I've loved it since the day it came out!

Hey DJ was a 1984 dance hit by The World Famous Supreme Team.  It's been famously sampled in the 1997 hit Honey by Mariah Carey and interpolated in the 2022 hit About Damn Time by Lizzo, but here is a 1994 sampled version by the duo A Lighter Shade of Brown.  It peaked at #33 in the UK and #43 in the US, but performed much better in North America on the dance charts where it peaked a #32 in the US and #6 in Canada.

My favourite kind of rap is when it's used against a dance beat and this version does it quite nicely.  I've always loved this one!

One track from the latter part of the 1990s that I can tolerate.. Men In Black by Will Smith (1997). The title song from a movie in which he starred.

It is best known for sampling Patrice Rushen’s signature hit “Forget-Me-Nots.”

^ That's a good one.  Speaking of rappers who went on to be successful actors, here's a famous one from Mark Wahlberg.  This one still holds up today!
