Subject: The 1992 Thread

Written By: batfan2005 on 01/01/24 at 2:12 pm

I couldn't find any general threads about 1992 so I figured I'd start a new one. It's one of my favorite years of the 90's. What comes to mind when you think about or remember (if you're old enough) about 1992? Here's my data dump without looking it up:

- The Rodney King riots in LA
- The presidential elections which Bill Clinton defeated incumbent George Bush Sr.
- The Summer Olympics in Barcelona
- Movies: Batman Returns, Wayne's World, Alien 3, The Bodyguard, My Cousin Vinny, Aladdin, Encino Man
- Music: Bohemian Rhapsody (because of Wayne's World), En Vogue, TLC debut, Arrested Development, multiple dance/house hits
- TV: Martin, Are You Afraid of the Dark (may have premiered earlier)
- Gaming: Street Fighter II (even though it was released in 1991 it became popular in arcades and home systems in '92), Sonic the Hedgehog 2

1992 was a start of a new life for me. I went back to school. Moved from a cabin on a mountain into an apartment which turned out to be a good place for me. I did a lot of growing there.

It was also the year I met Carlos but he didn't ask me out until '94.

This was the year I graduated High School. :)

And I graduated from elementary school, which at the time still included 6th grade; and began middle school. Incidentally, some junior highs were converting to middle schools (IOW, changing from grades 7-8-9 to 6-7-8).

I still headbang whenever I hear the fast part of the song, which is at 1:48 of this video. Freddie Mercury saw this scene right before he died and approved the song to be used in the movie.

That’s right, you were one year ahead of me in school. O0

Wasn't there going to be another Wayne's World sometime in the near future?

Maybe a sequel? Can't believe Mike Myers and Dana Carvey are 60 and 68, respectively. I was thinking they were in their 50's.

I think they could still do one if they're up to it.

If they’re interested.

They did a Superbowl commercial a few years ago, as their characters.

I just remembered Donald Trump was in the news that year, for filing bankruptcy on at least four of his hotel properties including The Plaza Hotel which he made a cameo in in Home Alone 2 that year.

Didn't he have an affair with her?

Yes, and then she shot his wife so both were busted. She was 17 at the time so Joey was charged with statutory rape.

Then I think Amy Fisher appeared in Playboy?

In spirit of today's opening ceremony, here is the torch lighting of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona:

Did your high school have a 30 year reunion? I'm three years away from it, and if feels like I just went to my 20 year reunion back in 2017.

That is right; I remember he appeared in the hotel, as the protagonist asks him how to get to the lobby.

Speaking of reunions, I went to my 10-year (in 2008), but not my 20-year (it was kinda thrown together so to speak). I hope I can make it to my 30-year reunion in 2028.

No, unfortunately they didn't but if they did I wasn't aware of it.

I'm surprised given the first two posted on this thread that nobody mentioned Batman: The Animated Series.

Most Kellogg's cereals got a fresh look that year, removing the white rectangle with a border styling that had dominated the company for so long.

Remember the stop sign after the end of Bullwinkle's Moose-A-Rama on election night on Nickelodeon after a day of call-in voting for kids who weren't old enough to vote?

Some of the more obscure toys commonly found commercials that year were Fantastic Flowers (remember the "Made By Me" is a scripty yellow at the end of the commercial), along with the Wild Bunch Bitsy Bears, Golden Sound Safari game, California Roller Baby, and Shampoodle.

The Bodyguard, A League of Their Own, and Aladdin were movies I remember that were popular in the later part of the year. Each of them having hit songs with of course Whitney Houston from the first one: "I Will Always Love You" and "I'm Every Woman". From A League of Their Own there was the Madonna song "This Used to Be My Playground", and from Aladdin was "A Whole New World" by Brad Kane and Lea Salonga.

Another thing I remember, at least in the South where I lived was the popularity of the Miami Hurricanes, particularly the NCAA football team as they were in the playoffs led by Heisman Trophy winner Gino Torretta, only to be upset by Alabama on New Years Day 1993 in the Sugar Bowl.
