Subject: 1990s interior design?

Written By: 90s Guy on 09/13/21 at 3:26 pm

Can we get some examples of 1990s interior design from the beginning, middle, and end of the decades please?

I don't have pictures, but...

After her '91 wedding, my girlfriend redid her kitchen, and I remember participating in the update with her and friends.  She picked new cabinets in light pickled oak, very chic at the time.  The color was as seen in the picture.  She added nice blue laminate countertops.  The walls were adorned with pretty wallpaper, white with a pink and blue swirl pattern, including wallpaper borders, which I thought was very chic and "now" looking (at the time).  I don't recall specifically, but most likely the wallpaper was on the backsplash too.  They used stick on vinyl square tile on the floor in a light color.  I believe the appliances were white, as expected (although I purchased a refrigerator in '95 and it was "almond" color - at that time, white was more popular).  The white cafe curtains had little pink and blue flowers.  To me, the kitchen looked delightful and very up-to-date.

I recall ivy as a pattern was very popular.  Brass fixtures were still popular too, although their popularity waned later in the decade.  Brass water fixtures (faucets, etc.) were used a lot.

^ Seeing that second IKEA cover reminds me - it was popular to do paint techniques then such as sponging; stenciling was also popular then in different settings.  Also, it was popular then to get wallpaper that you paint to get a textured appearance.  On that second IKEA cover, the walls look like they have some 90s-ish paint treatment.

When I first saw this topic, my first thought was IKEA too.

About IKEA - they weren't well known in the U.S. at the beginning of the 90's.  The 90's was the decade over which they got big.  At first when IKEA hit the U.S., they were known for weird things like inflatable sofas and paper lamps.  As the years wore on they became more conventional.  At no time during the 1990's were they considered "leading edge" fashion for homes - but they became popular among those with small budgets and/or small spaces and for people who enjoyed putting things together.

Recall that it was during the 1990s that the "McMansion" trend ramped up in earnest.  Builders built behemoth cookie-cutter houses on postage stamp sized lots - that was all the rage toward the mid-/late-1990s.  (We had a good friend couple who used to live in one of those - the house was magnificent, but their lot was small and their neighbors were right on top of them.)

We fitted a new kitchen in our last house in 1997 and did a stencil effect on parts of the walls. We actually cheated and bought some border paper, cut some of it out and glued it above the doorways.

Speaking of borders we decorated several rooms with two different paint colours top and bottom with a co-ordinating border running around the room. Elizabeth’s nursery had red and yellow walls with an animal themed border.

Black ash coloured furniture was also very trendy for living rooms. Our first house had dining table, coffee table and a display cabinet all matching.

My living room in October  and November 1996. This had been the house we had been living in since February 1994, and the set up was mostly the same.

Living room of new house, December 1997. We had moved in there in January 1997

The only piece of furniture held over between the two pictures was the pictured futon, which we'd had since 1994 and still have.

The 1990s washer and dryer. The washers were still wishy-washy, unlike the ones we have today that spin around. We owned ones just these around 1993.

Washers that "spin around" of the type you are referring to, existed in the 90s. They existed in the 60s too.

I like giving people a frame of reference. I feel it is important.

Front load washers have been available a long time, although it wasn't until the last 20ish years they were popular for in-home use.  Commercial front-loaders were seen at laundromats everywhere, maybe even before the 60's.  Until 20ish years ago, top-load washers were the vast majority of home washing machines, though a few people likely did have front loaders at home.

The color on the dryer on the right is "almond".  That appliance color was popular in the 80's and into the 90's but fell out of favor after that.  (We had almond kitchen appliances before we went stainless.)

Of course the washer, white, that color has been popular forever, although custom colors usually make it less so.  Its control panel looks very 80s.

I should point out another popular appliance color in the 90s: black.  Black became the go-to color for appliances in the late 80s/90s, very chic at the time.  Our friend couple who lived in the McMansion had black kitchen appliances.  They looked great in their big kitchen.

Another thing I'm in the extreme minority on......you know those "avocado" and "harvest gold" appliance colors from the 1970s that everybody now hates so much? I really like those. One felt very homey when in a kitchen with those. I can't say the same for the harsh stainless steel appliances of today. They make me feel like I'm in an industrial kitchen of a factory or restaurant.

After owning many an appliance,
New ones, come a time to be,
My choice from the stores and shops,
Has always been white for me.

We lived in the US 2007-10 and bought a top loading washing machine for our rental house. I had never used one before. It feels such and old fashioned machine to me.
