My dad cut his hair short sometime between August and September 1996 after having a mullet since for the most part 1988. When he cut it short, it was still long compared to today's "short hair.":

He kept the same left sided part that he'd had all throughout the 90s even when he had long hair until early 1998. Our home video of Christmas 1997, he's got the same basic haircut you see in the second photo.

Sometime between Dec 97 and March 98 he gets his hair cut in a very "preppy" buzzcut, which he keeps until around 2000:

My questions are:

1) Was his hair fashionable for 1997, and then for '98-00?

2) Was the "longer, but short" look in in 1996-1997?

3) Was there any particular name for his hairstyle in 96-97, with the fuller body and side parting? I call it a corporate haircut myself

4) Did short hairstyles radically change from 1997 to 1998 from that longer, fuller bodied look, to buzzed short hair for men? Is that the right time? If so what were the inspirations in movies/TV for the radical leap from the 97 style to the late 90s buzzcut?

Your dads hair was pretty typical for that time frame. That hairstyle (1996/1997) was pretty common up until the early 2000’s.
