Subject: What's the story behind those shirts that have a stripe across them?

I know they were popular during the Y2K era. I am a member of the YZ cusp microgeneration. With that being said, I was growing up at that time and don't know what caused those shirts to become popular. The reason why I posted this thread in the 1990s forum is because those shirts became popular in 1997 (The year the Y2K era started at.). I know the story behind the plaid/tartan shirt trend of the 90s (They were associated with Grunge music.) but I don't know the story behind those shirts that have a stripe across them. What caused those type of shirts that have a stripe across them to become popular?

On shirts stripes go up and down, and it is hoops that go across them.

I remember them too, but I never owned one. Not sure if there was actually a story behind why they became popular. I'm guessing it was just one of those trends.

I bought a few of those recently. I remember those sweater vests, sweaters and shorts around the y2k era. I’m the same age as you btw. I have a few photos as a kid with those. https://imgur.com/a/t3gXRlX I think the late 90’s early 2000’s was all about futurism, and the hieroglyphic bands across the chest gave off that aesthetic. It was really common on knitted sweaters too.
