Subject: 1991 was a special year
Written By: mc98 on 09/27/19 at 10:20 am
While 1990 was still culturally late 80s, 1991 was truly the first year of the 90s to give us the taste of the new decade. 1991 was a building block year that shaped the 90s decade. 1991 was the “2009” of the 90s.

True true! 1991 was definitely the start of the 90s, but still not without some late 80s influence, you can say late 80s influences can go as far as 1993/94.

This might sound a bit on the bizarre ;D, but I've always had a thing for fictional characters haha lol. 1991 was the year I fell in love with Sonic the Hedgehog. I was only 10 or 11 so I didn't know any better lol. I remember being such a fanatic of it! I still am to this day. Mid to late 90s Sonic was perfect.

I seemed to be a fan of various fictional characters that year too, particularly on animated shows. ;D There were one or two live-action programmes that I watched regularly at the time as well, which had characters I liked in one way or another.

The 1980s had been long gone at the time of the year 1991, of which was an ordinary year for me.

i think that would be 1993, however you forget to mention another thing 1991 is famous for and that is that it was the last year the soviet union existed and therefore the "officially" last year of the cold war

So pretty much, 1991, 1993, 1997, and 1998 were the special years of the 90s.

It varies from person to person.

While 1990 was still culturally late 80s...
In terms of music, I actually think 1990 itself was quite a groundbreaking standalone year. I mean Madonna's "Vogue" was something completely new to the masses (note I say masses). Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" was also pretty fresh sounding, as was MC Hammer. Then you had stuff like Snap's "The Power". All songs that were unlike anything in 1989.

Those songs were actually recorded in 1989, but I agree, there was something different about 1990. I do think the fashion of 1990 was still very 80s though, I've seen videos of high schools and stuff and the "mall hair" thing was still very much a thing.
1990 and 1991 weren't really either 80s or 90s in my opinion, same with 1980 regarding the 70s and 80s. They were just kind of a hybrid, and also partly their own thing. Politically too, the Berlin Wall was breached in Nov 89 but the USSR didn't collapse until August 91 so that period is kind of transitional between the Cold War and the current era of American hegemony.

Yes the Bush Sr era was kind of its own thing. It was my favorite time.

Special in what way?
I guess one of the reasons why 1991 was special is because alternative rock became hugely popular with acts like R.E.M., Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. It basically made hair metal obsolete.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik was my favorite of theirs. Lots of high school memories from Under The Bridge.

...a song which still gets ample radio airplay these days, even on "classic hit" stations. O0

When it comes to 1991, there was the earliest half which sides more with the 1989 to 1991 stage of the 80s and 90s and late 1991 of the 1991 to 1993 stage of the 90s.
