Subject: Super Mario Bros.

Are you a Super Mario Brothers fan? Do you like the Super Mario Brothers over Link of The Legend of Zelda and Little Mac from Punch-Out? I know “The World of Nintendo” stuff was very 1988 into 1989, but how do you forget about the popularity of Super Mario at the very start of 1990?
https://retrocious.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/title.jpg
This thread is dedicated to all things Super Mario Brothers in the US and abroad from the mid 1980s into the 1990s. Were the earliest games better as arcade games or home console games? What was the best ever Super Mario cartoon? Do you feel Super Mario and Luigi should have made an appearance in Captain N: The Game Master? Did you enjoy the movie over the cartoons? Did you own any Super Mario Brothers collectibles? What was the best food tie-in? The fruit snacks? The cookies? Dare I say it, the soda? Did your parents hate that you stayed inside playing Super Mario Brothers almost all day instead of going outside and playing like them? Should there have been a live action dramedy series for the Super Mario Brothers instead of “The Super Mario Brothers Super Show” in the late 80s and early 90s? Should “Club Mario” be released on DVD or locked in an early 90s time capsule? Please let me know any of your thoughts on all things Super Mario Brothers.

I even like Mario Brothers better
You’re the only person I know who brings up the 1983 arcade game, Mario Brothers. Super Mario Brothers is so much better, in my opinion. I was thinking the other night that it was interesting how close the gameplay of Super Mario Brothers 3 was to Super Mario World. It’s the easiest Mario game to play for about six or seven levels. Super Mario Brothers 1 is the hardest to beat, Super Mario Brothers 2 was the sequel we won’t talk about , and Super Mario Brothers 3 was the light at the end of the tunnel.
I’m not a SNES, 64, Dreamcast, Wii, or Switch fan. Do you think the Super Mario Brothers cartoons of the very late 80s into the early 90s were better than the earliest games?

I like to be Super Mario above ground and not in the sewers. If I wanted to play a NES game set in a sewer, I would take out the first TMNT game.

Yeah, Mario has pretty much always been my favorite video game series. I played Super Mario Bros. originally when I was about 3 years old during the early '90s. My parents got me a SNES for Christmas 1992 with Super Mario World and that was my favorite game for most of my childhood. Years later I got a N64 with Super Mario 64. By the way, I actually like the Mario Bros. movie. It's like the ultimate so bad it's good movie.

I definitely enjoyed The Super Mario Brothers Super Show back in 1989 when you had Lou Albano portraying Mario, it was such a fun time.

I think the writers of the Super Mario Brothers movie were going for a 1990 TMNT movie feel, but you can’t really do that with the Marioverse. The 1993 Super Mario Brothers movie should have been animated like they said it was going to be in that 1991 Comic Scene magazine I read recently. Unfortunately, Xennials and Millennials would compare the 1992 animated Mario movie to the Super Mario World cartoon and possibly the two before it. I don’t think a movie for the Super Mario Brothers should have been made, but, of course, I know people who went gaga for the movie before it came to theaters.

I remember both. Each episode would consist of the live-action segment during the first half, and the animated segment during the second half. The live-action segments starred Lou Albano and Danny Wells as the brothers (Mario and Luigi, respectively); they also voiced the respective characters in the animated segments.
Later on, the live-action segments were replaced by "Club Mario" (as well as the opening sequence), featuring a different motif altogether.

The Super Mario Brothers Super Show was all around cheesy. It’s hard to revisit it as an adult. In the very late 80s and early 90s, Xennials were blown away by there being a Super Mario cartoon, but that was it. I don’t know why Xennials did not see “TSMSS”, “Captain N: TGM”,and the movie “The Wizard” coming down the pipeline for Xers and Xennials in 1989. In hindsight, it seems inevitable that there would be that much advertising for Nintendo products at the end of the 80s. The NES was really taking off in the years 1987 and 1988 (especially 1988). Have you ever tried watching “Super Show” without the sound on?

The 1989 live action segments were the best part of “TSMSS” for me. “Club Mario”, on the other hand, was off the wall! Both “TSMSS” and “Club Mario” are equally dated. Do you think “Club Mario” would have worked under a different title without the Mario cartoons in there?

I agree totally.
Maybe "Club Mario" could have been a spinoff show, rather than replacing an already-established part of an already-established program. It probably would have still met with low ratings. ::)

“Club Mario” was totally early 90s. It had nothing to do with the Marioverse and that is why a lot of Xennials hated it at the time. Did you watch “King Koopa’s Kool Kartoons”?

True that.
Did you watch “King Koopa’s Kool Kartoons”?
No, but I do know that Koopa was a main villain in the animated segments. He was also originally named Bowser. (The character also appeared in live-action form in the 1993 live-action film, played by Dennis Hopper...but his appearance there is more human -- rather than reptilian -- for the most part.)

“King Koopa’s Kool Kartoons” was more like “The Bozo the Clown Show” than “TSMSS”. It was filmed in front of a live audience. “KKKK” was different from anything on TV for children at the time, but it only lasted one season. Xennials preferred “Steampipe Alley” and “The Dr. Fad Show” to “KKKK”. Unfortunately, XYers that weren’t die hard Mario fans were probably too busy actually playing the NES to watch “KKKK” at the time. It’s a shame too, because the only way to catch “KKKK” is on YouTube. The NES can be played anytime in the 2010s, but I doubt “KKKK” will ever be shown on TV again.
Would you have watched reruns of a dramedy version of a Super Mario Brothers program made for Xers and XYers if it were made in the 80s?

“Super Mario Land” was too frustrating to me. The Gameboy screen too small and dark to see everything happening without a Light Boy attached to the Gameboy. I like the model for Nintendo’s Gameboy, but that’s about it. I thought it was “big stuff” when it was new in the very late 80s and early 90s, but I like the NES better nowadays.

Wario reminds me too much of Odlaw, Waldo’s nemesis, from the Where’s Waldo universe. I wonder if Wario was based off of Odlaw in any way. Odlaw was introduced to book readers one year before Nintendo fans knew of Wario. I never delved too far into the Marioverse in the 90s, because the games for all systems were expensive. In those days, you were lucky if you could get any one Mario game with your NES, SNES, or 64. What did you think when you first saw Wario?

It wasn't too hard for me to see. In fact, I got the Gameboy as a birthday gift in 1991, when I turned 11. I had longed for one after going to a friend's house a month earlier and playing with his Gameboy. I still have it today, but I haven't played with it in several years. Periodically I will, though.

I’ve seen the 1989 Gameboy once at a church flea market. I didn’t purchase that Gameboy from the vendor, but I stayed around the vendor long enough to hear another old-head ask the price for it. The Gameboy would be a collectible to me nowadays.
Do you like the Mario merchandise better than the Gameboy games? I love seeing the Nintendo Power logo on retro clothing. I stopped caring about Mario sweatshirts, pajamas, and shirts after “Super Mario World” came out. The old art for the instruction booklets to the first three games was the best. Do you know what Mario merchandise I’m talking about ?

The Super Mario Brothers 3 Happy Meal toys were at McDonalds in August of 1990. The Super Mario Brothers PVCS were in stores in 1989. One of the Mario PVCs with a spring on the bottom was re-released as Racoon Mario for the 1990 Happy Meal set. Oh yes, that's right. Sorry, I was off by a year. (For some reason I thought they were August '89. That must've been something else.)
No, I did not know about the Squishy Raccoon toy. I turned 10 that year, so I was unaware of the toy possibilities for the little ones.

The art for the Happy Meal box and the toys were made in 1989. The U3 squishy Mario toy was not seen in the display for the SMB3 Happy Meal toy display. Parents of the 90s had to request them for their infants in 1990.

Yes, I did. I played with my family since they are family video games, but no, we did not hold Nintendo parties at all. I don't even think we had the funds for that back then.
As for the games, I can't exactly remember how long each one took to complete. However, I was happy I beat the final bosses of each Mario title I played. Sometimes Bowser (except in the American SMB2) can be a pain, you know?

Every major property was into a cereal. The last Ralston cereal based off a property was Spider-Man Cereal in the mid 90s. Don’t ask how there was a cereal for “Spider-Man Animated Series” and not one for “Batman The Animated Series”, “X-Men”, or “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers”. What a missed opportunity.

Was the “Super Mario Brothers” franchise ruined in the 90s for you?
No, it wasn't ruined for me.

I prefer when Bowser was King Koopa and Princess Peach was Princess Toadstool Peach. I didn’t like everything Mario made after “Super Mario Brothers 3”. “Super Mario Land” was nowhere near as great as the NES games from my point of view. 1985 to 1990 are the best years for “Super Mario Brothers” for me with 1988 to 1990 being peak years for the franchise.

“Super Mario All-Stars” was the biggest letdown for me at the time. The commercial stunk and the original 3 games do not translate well into 16 bit games.

This brings back memories! I use to play Super Mario 64 with my sister in the 90s. We use to buy ice cream, and play this game all day. We we would take turns since it was only a one player game. It was so much fun.

It was Mario Kart that took my interest back then.

I grew up with the old school Super Mario during The 1980's.

I notice there is a lot more Mario merchandise in stores now than there was when I was kid. That stuff was hard to come by in the late ‘90s/Y2K-ish and I would have killed for it. I had some plush characters that came from Nintendo Power magazine and a few Mario Kart 64 figures where you would pull the kart backwards on the floor and it would launch forward and fire a shell and that was about it. When I go shopping for my nephews I see a lot more Mario stuff in toy aisles, plus things like bedding, blankets, etc, but they’re not into Mario sadly :( Hell they even have Mario LEGOs now. Those would have completed my childhood!

I remember the commercial for it. The video is LQ as it's probably from a VHS recording.

I think the cereal would be kinda stale by now (unsuitable for eating). I mean, it's been 32 years!

I'm pretty sure they have a way to keep a cereal like that fresh so it can be good to consume.

No, I do not think 32 year old cereal, even in a sealed box, would be good to consume. There things have expiration dates for a reason!

And it's not like vintage candy that they are still making and selling at select locations. I did however see a Super Mario cereal on eBay.

It wouldn't make sense to sell cereal that is 30-someodd years old. I mean, it would need to be preserved somehow...but by the same token, it wouldn't be safe to eat because it'd be well past the expiration date on the box. Still unsuitable for eating.

I used to be scared of the piano in Big Boo's Haunt. You know which piano I'm talking about.

I don't. I was only 3 then.
However, the character Mario first appeared in the video game Donkey Kong way back in 1981, as a player character (for the player operating the game to be) before he got his own game two years later. And his popularity later flourished. O0

I thought Wario could've been his/their older brother.
When I first saw him (on a TV ad for the video games he was in) I thought he was Mario's evil twin or something. After all, his name only differed from Mario by the initial letter. Apparently he's an archrival to Mario. And the emblem on his hat is a letter "W" that is just like Mario's "M" turned upside down.
You can read all about him on Wiki.

And there's a game for Gameboy it's called Wario's "6 Golden Coins", it must've came out in The early 1990's.
