Subject: Describe the Mid 1990s
Written By: Slim95 on 01/10/19 at 11:13 pm
It always fascinates me hearing about what a time period was like at a time that I don't remember, specifically the era I was born in. This is the period before I started forming memories in the late 1990s. Someone please describe to me what it was like being a kid in the mid '90s. What was popular around 1995? Was it different from the late 1990s? Was it different from the early 1990s too? What were the popular trends of the mid 1990s? Thanks!

Kindergarden 1st,second grade, summer before 3rd grade. I have vivid memories of this time period so I will chime in.
Everything had sheeshty worn out look to it (think Beavis & Buttheads house) Grunge music, Gangsta rap, the teens older than me were depressed for no reason. Popular video game systems were SNES, Sega Genesis, Game boy, games that were popular, Sonic 3, Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2, Madden, Mortal Kombat 3, Megaman X, Kirbys Dream Land 2, Super Mario Land 2. Fox kids was in it's prime. Most kids watched Power Rangers & X-Men. Nickelodeon was in it's prime. Seinfeld was in it's prime as well as Married with Children. Simpsons again was also in it's prime. Movie theatres did not have stadium seating at the time (everything was flat) TGIF on abc was popular for kids.
I might end up doing an atmosphere thread for 95 to illustrate the vibe

The most boring and forgettable part of the 90s for sure

The mid 90s were a bit dire and grungy. I mean obviously that's a huge generalisation, but they were very safe years. Think of the first few seasons of Friends. Lots of flannel, women wore bright red lipstick and looked very pale. Indie music was big and gangster rap was big. Both those genres of music aren't exactly feelgood.
Saying all that, my favourite 90s movies "Clueless" and "While You Were Sleeping" came out in 1995, so it wasn't all bad.

I remember going to see that at the cinema. Soundtrack was great... "Another Suitcase", "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You" and "You Must Love Me".

But what about Gangsta Rap and Alanis Morissette? The girl bands like TLC tried to make the mid 90s bright as possible, and you had Windows 95 enter the mainstream especially the internet, and Space Jam, who could forget? Hehe, there were fun shows like Friends and Fresh Prince of Bel Air that tried to make the mid 90s happy as possible

Gangsta rap was not colorful, most rappers wore Flannels or shirts with Gunstraps vests on them like Tupac, TLC is the only really exception with their video for Waterfalls (where their outfit is shiny) I think you are confusing early 90s episodes of Prince of Bel Air which the fashion then was Campy and neon Vs 94 95 96 episodes where the color was more muted for clothing. Space Jam was not really neon, also that was a movie with cartoons in it so you can't really count it.
Biggest Example of this is Boy Meets World a show that started in 1993 and ended in 2000

It all depends on what section of the 90's you are looking at wether it will be colorful, muted or bright, as
Alannis & TLC all have videos spanning different sections of the 90's. A song like Red Light District from TLC in 95
is going to look different than NO scrubs which came out in 99. All 3 sections of the 90s felt VERY different't living in
them, It is kind of you kind had to be alive to really have it sink in.

Do you mean 1997, not 1996, for if so, you saw the film while it was still in production? :)

The film debuted Christmas Day 1996.
To quote wiki:
"The film premiered on November 1, 1997, at the Tokyo International Film Festival, where reaction was described as "tepid" by The New York Times. Positive reviews started to appear back in the United States; the official Hollywood premiere occurred on December 14, 1997, where "the big movie stars who attended the opening were enthusiastically gushing about the film to the world media"."

My error,.
Evita is a great film, I had in on DVD, and almost every time it is on television, we watch it.
I still to see on stage, I have seen many of ALW productions.

Speaking of Titanic, the major hit from that could be added to the dreary mid 90s lol. "My Heart Will Go On" droned on and on. Same could be said for Toni Braxton's "Un-break My Heart". Both songs a little too depressing.

Titanic was in the late 90s tho. I don't blame you for thinking it is mid90s.

Tim Allen was America’s favorite dad. Barney merchandise filled up the major clothing stores everywhere. The older teenagers were listening to Nirvana and wearing Nirvana concert shirts. Fox Kids was every child’s favorite weekday afternoon block. The Animaniacs was a must watch cartoon from when it started to 1995 or so. Charlotte Hornets and Orlando Magic merchandise was big. Films based on old TV shows like The Flintstones were doing well in the Box Office. Then, The Brady Bunch came to theaters.
The mid 90s were very laid back if you were a Generation Yer or older Generation Xer. Some Boomers, Xennials, and young Xers enjoyed the mid 90s. Of course, everyone looks at the mid 90s differently.
As someone said on this forum, 1993 was part 2 to the year 1992. The mid 90s really started to unravel from there. At the same time, each year of the mid 90s failed to measure up to 1992. The mid 90s certainly had their moments for pop culture fans of all ages nonetheless. The Lion King, at the time, seemed like the be-all and end-all for 90s Disney movies. Today, I like the Disney Princess films from late 80s and early 90s over everything that came afterward. That’s just me.

Those clothes from the first season episodes of Boy Meets World don’t look like early 90s clothes. Those clothes might have been made in the early 90s. I’m not sure what you mean by early 90s clothes.

A lot more written letters, phone calls, and seeing people in person that's for sure. More time was spent going outside and enjoying life and nature, society wasn't as PC imo and it felt a little more free to me. Of course fashion was terrible, video games were blocks of pixels, and music was more about grunge/alternative. Movies still had a personal feel to them with VHS tapes and a small CRT TV but rewinding them sucked. I had a good time during the 90s but I felt it was fairly dull at times.

Being bookend between the collapse of the Soviet Union and 9/11 gave the 90s a seemingly peaceful feel.
The mid90s had a kind of idyllic but boring feel to it. The mid90s was the most idyllic period in my lifetime. Then again, I was a kid.
If you were a kid, Nickelodeon was HUUUUGEEE...unless you didn't have cable or access to cable.
The mid90s were right before everyone started to really get thirsty over the possibilities of millennium technology.
The knowledge that the digital future was coming still hovered above like dark clouds forming.
The three biggest international crisis I remember during that time was the Rwandan genocide, earthquake in Haiti, and Bosnian Serbian War
My neighbor's father was deployed to Bosnia at some point.
I think this period was where I heard the term NATO the most in my lifetime
Gay marriage and gays in the military became a huge issue.
Homosexuality was still a pretty taboo subject and most people didn't even try to be nice about their bias against it
But while this was true, all the fighting about gay marriage and gay soldiers gave LGBT people an opportunity to reveal themselves
To me, this period up to 97 was the greatest era for sitcoms.
People played outside a lot more and video games hadn't yet taken hold of male youth
If you think the pornography scene is gross now, pornography back then seemed a VHS dumpster fire compared to the digital sleekness of today
The anime scene was also a dumpster fire and very niche

There has never been more Nickelodeon merchandise in stores than what we saw in the mid 90s. There were Rugrats paperback books in Barnes and Nobles. Nicktoons trading cards and Ren and Stimpy candy dispensers at record and video stores. Who can forget about the orange VHS tapes, Nickelodeon Magazine, and GAK? Not to mention, Are You Afraid of the Dark and Clarissa Explains It All board games. Hey Dude and Fifteen chapter books that didn’t sell in the early 90s were even on clearance in some book stores. The mid 90s were a great time to be a Nickelodeon fan in general.
All late 80s kids (Xennials) had were Double Dare yoyos and other Double Dare memorabilia.
The mid 90s were better for Millennials that watched Nickelodeon all weekend long than any other time in 20th century history.

The mid 90s were the new early 70s. Instead of Woodstock, there was Lollapalooza. Children were reading X-Men and collecting troll dolls. The turtleneck trend of the late 80s carried well past the mid 90s.
