Subject: When did the 90s peak for YOU?
Written By: 90s Guy on 08/24/18 at 1:08 am
I mean, what part of the 90s was the best part for you personally, and why?
For myself, with hindsight, I would say the absolute peak came from roughly the Spring of 1995 through late Summer 1996:
My parents were healthy, working, and our family was prosperous financially. My grandparents were all still alive and my paternal grandparents still lived in NY and I was very close with my paternal cousins. My mom's side, while always dysfunctional, was at its least dysfunctional in this period. My sisters, my parents, and myself were all in close contact in this period (whereas I would not see my sister Nicole from the second half of 1996 until 2002, and my parents do not speak to my other sister anymore since 2014). My godfather was still alive. I was welcome in my grandmother's house. We lived in a great apartment which was pretty much a house. My two favorite dogs were alive and well. In the wider world, a lot of things I loved were still around and prospering. Sierra On-Line was still a company and was the biggest PC game company on the planet; Blizzard was still making cool, highly original games and not playing it safe; Adventure games were still the leading genre in PC gaming; Sega was still in the console business and was still a force to be reckoned with, and Sonic the Hedgehog was still massive while at the same time, Donkey Kong Country was huge so you had the best of both worlds. Batman Forever was out in this period and was a perfect balance of camp and dark for me. Gargoyles, Beavis & Butthead, and Rocko's Modern Life were still airing. The economy was booming. It was a really happy time for me personally, 1995-1996.
What about you?

January of 1990 to August of 1991:
- ‘90s pop culture phenomenons (i.e. Married with Children, Roseanne, and Saved by the Bell) were still enjoyable. At the same time, the best incoming pop culture icons of the ‘90s for the 2000s were being introduced (I.e. - The Simpsons and Sonic the Hedgehog). In other words, the ‘90s were the ‘90s. :)

It's probably kind of ridiculous for me to answer this because I wasn't born until 1999, but in my opinion, the 90's peaked in 1994:
*It was probably the peak of grunge fashion.
*It was the peak of grunge, eurodance, and gangsta rap.
*It was likely the peak year of 90's television shows and movies.
*OJ Simpson's car chase.

Is this accurate?
January 1, 1990 - February 13, 1997: 100 percent 80's
February 14, 1997: 100 percent 90's
February 15, 1997 - December 31, 1999: 100 percent 2000's

This is extremely accurate except for the fact that the 2000s don't have any cultural identity therefore it should be more something like this:
January 1, 1990 - February 13, 1997 = 100% 80s
February 14, 1997 = 100% 90s
February 15, 1997 - December 31, 1999 = 100% 2010s

Lol but, 1997 was actually quite a noticably changeful year unlike 2006.
To answer the original question, I believe the 90s peaked around 1994 - 1995. Adult Contemporary/Ballad music, Britpop, Grunge/Post Grunge, Alternative Rock, Country (such as Hootie and the Blowfish), Reggae (such as Shaggy), Gangsta Rap, Miami Bass, New Jack Swing, Slow R&B and Euro-House music were all very popular during that time frame. Tons of good films came out, 1994 is often referred by many as the greatest year in film history. Shows such as Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Beverly Hills 90210, The Simpsons, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Seinfeld and much more were very popular on Television during this time. The Sega Genesis was still very popular, The SNES was as the height of its popularity, Doom clones were huge for PC gaming and the Gameboy was still popular. Don't forget games such as Donkey Kong Country, Chrono-Trigger, Doom II, Super Metroid, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, The Mega Man X series and much more.

You basically strengthened my argument about 1994 being the peak of the 90's.

1993-1994. I was in kindergarten and had a relatively good time. Lion king was huge here. On TV we had reruns of TMNT's 1987 cartoon, the Gummy bears, Duck tales, Chip and Dale rescue rangers, The Brave Little Toaster, Once Upon A Forest, Rock A Doodle. Troll dolls were everywhere, and we exchanged aromatized sheets of papers from notepads. :D Also those you guns with those rosette-like red munitions, loads of you dinosaurs due to Jurassic park and The Land Before Time.
Maybe 1995 was good as well with Bonkers, Animaniacs, Vampy, Family matters, The Simpsons and Married With Children on German TV and Murder She Wrote on Italian TV Rai Uno (we had a satellite dish in 1995-97).

Also, another cool thing about the 90s: 2D animation and 3D coexisted in film. I'm a geek for animated films and I miss seeing AAA budget 2D movies.

No, but it was just beginning. You had Toy Story in 95 and a Bug's Life and Antz both in 98. And you still had movie studios churning out 2D. It was unbalanced but today, you have ONLY 3D.

I think the era with the perfect balance of AAA 2D AND 3D Animated films was from circa 1998-2004. Essentially during the era of Dreamworks rising in prominence with its popular array of both 2D & 3D (and even stop motion) films like Antz, The Prince of Egypt, Chicken Run, Shrek 1 & 2, Sprit, among others. You also had the peak of Pixar with its stellar films ranging from the sequel of Toy Story, Monster's Inc, The Incredibles, & (my personal favorite) Finding Nemo. Finally, the last few Disney Renaissance films of Mulan, Tarzan, & Fantasia 2000, and a few of the Post Disney Renaissance films like The Emperor's New Groove, Dinosaurs, & Lilo & Stitch. Among other films you had; The Iron Giant, Scooby Doo & The Cyberchase, and The Rugrats Trilogy in Movies (among other popular Nickelodeon films on the silver screen), to name a few.
After 2004, there was a steep decline in 2D Animated films making it to the theaters, before 1998 you really only had Toy Story to show for it as a 3D Computer animated film, along with the Disney Renaissance still being in full force. Thus, 1998-2004 serves as a good equillibrium when 2D & 3D animated films both did relatively well in the box office & received critical acclaim from critics.

I think that Fantasia 2000 was post-Disney Renaissance; I usually see people say that Tarzan was the last Disney Renaissance film.

I think that Fantasia 2000 was post-Disney Renaissance; I usually see people say that Tarzan was the last Disney Renaissance film.
Fantasia 2000 is a bit controversial. You'd have to ask #infinity that question since she's an expert on the history of Disney Animation. However, I'd probably say it leans more towards the Renaissance, but just barely though.

Doug from Nostalgic Critic did a great review on Fantasia 2000, and I think the sort of hit or miss attitude of the review, while the film still having exceptional animation & music, shows how the film is a bit of both eras intertwined.
Overall, I loved this film when I was a kid. Its the Fantasia that people of my generation grew up with.

I can't watch NC's reviews anymore. There's all these scandals coming out lately about how he treated his employees poorly, as well as how Jewwario may've
assaulted an underage girl and had it covered up before he died

Yeah I agree. A lot of the 2d movies in that era were like cult classics though, because they bombed at the box office compared to the 3d ones, but had many devoted fans.
Examples: Road to El Dorado, Prince of Egypt, Osmosis Jones, Treasure Planet, Atlantis

Well many of those examples are true, with the exception of Prince of Egypt though. But yeah I agree, it was a shame that the 2D animated films didn't make as much money as the 3D films, but I'm glad that these films have garnered cult status over the years. These films aged like 'fine wine'.

Fantasia 2000 kind of started the whole experimentation Disney were trying to do in order to break away from previous movies after people (and themselves) were getting sick of the whole "Renaissance movie tropes" (coming-of-age story + musical). The whole post-Renaissance era was defined by experimentation and modernism, but of course experimentation makes failure a bigger possibility so you also get one of the most "hit-and-miss" periods in Disney's history.
So in short I definitely wouldn't consider it part of the Renaissance.

Fantasia 2000 was a flop at the box office I believe, and had a mixed response from critics, so I can see why some would place it outside the Renaissance. However, having this big "millennium celebration" movie at the end of the Renaissance might just "feel right" for some, so I can also see why others would include it in the Renaissance.
