Subject: 1998 felt like the end of the 90's (anyone else feel this way ?)
Written By: John Titor on 04/11/18 at 3:06 pm
-Michael Jordan retired
- End of Family Matters
-End of Step by Step
- TGIF declining in the ratings
- Music at this point was 70% teen pop
-Grunge was dead (declined in 1997)
- Britney Spears debuts in November
-South park EXPLODES
- Pokemon debuts
- AIM gets very popular
- WWF beats WCW
- Nick starts to decline a little bit
I actually moved in December 1997, when I visited my old town again in 1998 everything felt very dry and drab and dead
in the summer of 1998, things felt WAYYY past their peak and I am kind of glad that the 90's got a y2k upgrade in the second
half of 1998

I don't see how people think Nickelodeon started to get worse by the end of the 90s when it started to get better in the early 2000s.

There was a point in the late 90s where the network was stagnant , relying on reruns of shows that were popular in the mid 90's
and phasing it out around 98/99, was not until like 2003/2004 when Nick got the TEEN NICK block when it was on an upswing.

Definitely not the first half of '98 when people were watching Titanic and Seinfeld and playing GoldenEye 007.

More like Summer 1998, I went back to my hometown area that time for a little bit
and EVERYTHING felt played out, like the 90's (the classic TGIF 90s) went as far as they
could go culturally, I remember still seeing SNES games for rent in the town and being like...... ughhh get
over it we are on ps1 and n64 now.
TGIF at this time was tapped out after giving away Step by Step and Family matters to CBS, the TGIF block
was doing terrible and heavily relying on Sabrina and Boy meets world.

Also summer of 1998 was one of the GREATEST. I went to London and Athens :D
And it was '90s as f*ck. The iconic London Eye wasn't even built yet lol. I remember hailing a taxi with the thumbs up haha. No cellphones or Internet (on vacation) or anything back then. :D Although teen ppp was already huge by then from what I remember.

By end of '98 I'd say we entered the Y2K era as the culture style of the early 00's was kicking in by that time.

Sounds like a fun summer you had lol
For me it just felt like 1998 was the 90s going as far as they could

1997 and most of 1998 felt the same to me, I feel like the 90s ended in 1999. Early 1999 felt pretty 90s still meanwhile, late 1999 looks pretty the same as the very early 2000s (2000 - mid-2001). Grunge was already kinda dead by about early/middle 1997 and bubblegum Pop was already pretty popular with the Spice Girls, Hip Hop was already moving towards the materialistic Bling Bling Era too. Bubblegum and Teen Pop really began taking over the charts in 1999 and most people I know didn't really have the internet until about late 1998.

I agree, but there was still that lingering late 90's bubblegum pop feel in 2000 and early '01. The boy band craze still carried through until at least summer of '01. Sugar Ray, which I associate with the late 90's, also had a hit in the summer of '01. And how do we classify Smash Mouth? Quintessential Y2K?

Decadeology really should be banned.
Well, actually it is on this site but it needs to be enforced more.

Early 1998 was still arguably part of the core 90's.
Late 1998, on the other hand, seemed as if it was part of the Y2K age.
