Subject: 90s Rave Culture

Written By: 90s Guy on 04/03/18 at 11:39 am

Can those who were around tell me what the 90s Rave scene was like (clothes wise, artists that were popular, etc) especially from say 1996-1999?

Those were my prime clubbing years! I don't think I ever slept... or ate.  :D

Well we had our own club in the city which we were fiercely loyal to. But on the odd occasion we used to travel to other big clubs / warehouses in nearby cities.

We went out Friday, Saturdays and Sundays. Sometimes even Thurs and Mondays. The clubs and after-clubs were open til 6am. On public holidays they would extend that to 1pm the next afternoon.

From 1996 to say 1998 the scene was very glamourous. We used to dress up in designer gear (DKNY, Armani, D&G), wear huge platform trainers, combat pants, fur coats, Native american chokers etc. Others used to go way over the top with proper costumes.

After 1998 I started hanging out with a "cooler" crowd. It was all about sports gear then - baseball caps, Adidas tops.

There were no popular music artists. Popular DJs - yes. Our music always became underground club hits - then  as soon as they made the charts, no-one would be seen dead dancing to them lol.

Photo below : Some might say this was typical late 90s rave fashion. A lot of people did wear stuff like this but we always thought they were just jumping on the bandwagon and not serious clubbers.

I could post like 1000 great club anthems. When I first started clubbing the music was very handbag vocal house. As the decade progressed it turned into more bouncy house and also hard house. Tall Paul was always a favourite.

This is an example of the harder bouncy stuff that rounded off the decade.

And this is the more vocal piano house of 1996. The DJ would've sped it up a bit though.
