Subject: Anime on Cartoon Network BEFORE Toonami
Written By: TheReignMan99 on 03/15/18 at 5:43 pm
This ad is from 1995 and was the FIRST TIME EVER that anime (known as "Japanimation" or "Japanime" at the time) was aired on Cartoon Network:

This was on January 28, 1995, a full 2 years BEFORE Toonami premiered in March 1997. It's pretty cool 8).
EDIT: G-Force: Guardians of Space, which first aired on January 2nd, 1995, was actually the first anime series to air on CN but the point still stands that January 1995 was essentially the first time EVER that anime was on CN :D.

That's very interesting to know! It's unfortunate though that none of us remember it since most folks didn't either have CN that year or didn't start watching that channel until the Powerhouse era.

Yeah, also anime wasn't popular in the US then anyways.
Toonami IS what made anime popular in the US ;D.

Agreed, it did as well as Dragonball Z, Pokemon and Sailor Moon.

Night of the Vampire Robots. Liz and I watched Vampire Hunter D and Robot Carnival that awesome January night. Who remembers the Ninja Robots? They were anime, too. And of course, we had Speed Racer...

Yeah, they did; however, Dragonball Z and Sailor Moon arrived here prior to Toonami 1 or 2 years earlier.

Is that one of the early anime for CN? I saw it before, but it was much later.

'Course it was. It was on back in 95/96. Was on for a while; I remember seeing it before Toonami would start. Coulda been part of Super Chunk.

Yes, that is true. However, Sailor Moon and DBZ did not become popular in the U.S. UNTIL they were on Toonami.
It was Toonami that made them famous to a legion of kids in the late '90s and early '00s.

If it came on before the Toonami block, then that's when I most likely saw it. However, I didn't see it much anymore after a certain year.

Agreed! Toonami helped with the anime explosion of that time.
Oh, and I just checked out that show. Apparently, G-Force returned sometime on CN in 2000 which means I may have seen it at one point.

It was part of the Toonami Midnight Run: late-night entertainment for bad 11 year olds like me.

Interesting. TBH, I barely remember CN before Toonami. Nickelodeon was at its height at that time and there's never been anything like Nick's peak since.

I would have never known my self if hadn't watched a YouTube upload of a Dragon Ball Z impact on the west or some such. There were clips of them in the video.

Really? I mean you were only 2 and 3 in 1995 & 1996.
Also, just as an FYI, Sailor Moon debuted on Toonami on June 1, 1998. Dragon Ball Z followed on August 31, 1998.
Agreed! Toonami helped with the anime explosion of that time.
Toonami didn't just help, it CAUSED the anime explosion of that time.

That's the exact video I watched as well. I just watched it a couple hours ago and decided to make this thread because I found it to be a cool fact! :D

Interesting post ReignMan. This let's me know the first anime on CN (G-Force: Guardians of Space) and the last anime on CN (Pokemon: XY&Z) aired outside of Toonami's time on CN.

I meant later on in the era. I most likely saw Speed racer sometime in the morning.
Well, that puts everything into perspective considering it would be about 2 or 3 months the time before I started watching toonami.

I think that's how I might have seen it. I watched toonami's midnight run all the time when it was on. Good times with that late night block :)

Speaking of Toonami, I just remember when the Dreamcast was reviewed and one of the featured games was Sonic Adventure! Tom said it looked "really great." I was so mad that Tom didn't care that Amy looked different... :-[
