It's really interesting how different 1999 sounded for the most part compared to 2000 in hip-hop.  I think Dr. Dre's Chronic 2001 album and Eminem's Marshall Mathers LP really helped push hip-hop forward around that time.  In 1999 you still had a small amount of gangsta rap influences that are noticeably absent from a lot of songs that came out in 2000.

I personally think that is a second golden age of hip-hop.  Pretty much 1999 through about 2003ish.  It was the era that was Eminem's peak and rappers like Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Xzibit, Nate Dogg, etc were popular.  It seems like hip-hop was pretty well balanced between regions back then with artists like DMX and Jay-Z representing the east coast and artists like Ludacris and Juvenile representing the South.  As the decade wore on, the South would completely take over the genre.

Busta Rhymes had the best videos (and Missy along with a couple others). I've always LOVED that what's it gonna be video. I doubt we'll get that type of creativity again from Hip-Hop artists.
