Subject: How big was Independence Day when it came out?

Written By: 90s Guy on 03/02/18 at 7:05 am

Like...If we take it's popularity in 1996 and then extrapolate it to now...Would it be as popular one of the Marvel movies, or even bigger, now? I'm not sure if I'm phrasing it right but...Would ID4 be comparable in popularity in 1996 to a Marvel movie (big, but not a universal EVENT) or closer to Titanic and The Force Awakens (a global event which almost everyone saw at least once).

Very big, very popular, everyone wanted to see it.

The sequel was a bit of a let down.

From wiki:

"Independence Day was the highest-grossing film of 1996, surpassing both Twister and Mission: Impossible. The film had its preview screenings on July 2, 1996, grossing $11.1 million from 2,433 theaters. At that point, it had the biggest pre-opening of any film, breaking the six-year record held by Die Hard 2. The next day on July 3, the film officially opened to the public with $17.4 million. During its second day of release, it earned $17.3 million, which made it the highest Thursday gross, holding this record for six years until it was taken by Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones in 2002."

Many people wanted to, I'm sure. I for one did NOT wish to view it. I hated all the violence and explosions and stuff. That's not what I care to watch in a movie.

I have the same feeling with "London Has Fallen" (2016), I do not like Seeing London in a state of turmoil.

I'm not into violent movies much myself.

I only watch those type of films it the film has had an Oscar Nomination or has won an Oscar.
