Subject: Gimme a snapshot of your 90s childhood
Written By: 90s Guy on 11/29/17 at 1:37 pm
Mine:
Late 1995-late summer 1996. My father kept a small second apartment to see my sister (it was a complicated situation; My sister wasn't supposed to know my parents were still together, so he got a second apartment separate from our main one). Small little dingy place. Not dirty, but 'grungy.' He and I would sit and listen to Zombie and sing it together. He was obsessed with that song. The memories are fading now, but, the period is rich with the smell of incense. I remember seeing him rolling joints in the kitchen using his cigarette machine. My mother and he weren't on the best of terms and he moved more and more stuff over to that apartment and he and I spent more and more time together. It sounds perhaps like a bad time, but it was actually quite happy. My sister was a little teenage dipsh*t who liked to tease me and mock the things I liked; she was 15-16 to my 5. 1996 was the year my father and I both had mullets. We went all over the place together that year. It was a good time. No Need to Argue. Myst. King's Quest V. My dad's Bronco II which he named "Touch of Grey" after the Grateful Dead song.
Yes, I have other memories from the 90s, but the 1995-1996 period was the happiest, even though my memories of it are fading. We had two apartments, got our very first computer in 1995, got a second dog in 1995, my mother got her first new car in 1995, my dad got his Bronco in 1995 as well, just a very contented happy time. The end of 1996 and 1997 would bring a lot of changes - a move to New Jersey, the near-death of my mother, the death of my dog being hit by a car, a lot of darkness. I look at 1996 as the last consistently happy time of my childhood.

You can if you want to, this is a thread to bask in memory and photos are memory's companion.

Myself in the apartment I mentioned, December 1995 or January 1996:

My dad and sister in the apartment's kitchen, probably January or February 1996. I actually took this picture. Not bad photography skills for a 5 year old:

Great to see a post about the 90s. Here's mine Summer 1998:
My mom was having the carpets cleaned by Stanley Steamer and I went outside to play around the neighborhood. As I headed north on the Cul de sac that's west of my house I met a kid named Eric and we became good friends. We played fun outdoor games like Cops and Robbers, we saw Madeline in the movie theaters, we played with Lincoln Logs and we played ball games.

An old photo of myself from 1995 when I was 15. It was from glamour shots, and they dressed me up like I was going to a dinner party. It was the first time I had professional photos taken. Loved my long locks!

I was already a teenager but in the early 90s I went to a boarding school. Used to love weekend mornings as we used to bring our duvets (bedcovers) down to the tv lounge and watch Saturday morning cartoons... Bill & Ted, NKOTB, Tailspin, Chip N Dale.
