Subject: What could kids get away with in the 90s but cannot do now
Written By: d90 on 08/29/17 at 6:09 pm
List stuff that kids were allowed to do In the Nineties
1. Watch anything on tv without the Vchip blocking the show
2. Learn how to add, multiply, subtract and divide number without the Common Core requirements
3. Go places without being tracked by their parents
.

Pirating movies and music, although that would have been very difficult to do nevertheless as almost no one would have had the internet fast enough to achieve that. I do hear it was more commonplace back in those days to download music and videos without DRM restrictions before streaming was invented.

Going to the park by yourself. I hear nowadays, if your kid gets hurt, you get charged with child neglect. >:(

This. When I was a kid in the early-mid 2000's I used to go the nearby park with my neighborhood friends with no adult supervision.

When I was 7/8, my mom used to kick me out of the house if she didn't want to deal with me. Can you imagine that happening today? ;D I would be taken away by child services for sure.

Haha. My mom never really forced me outside the house, I usually voluntarily went outside to do crazy sh!t. Climbing trees, swimming at the local pool, being a wise guy at the corner store (too much Ed, Edd, n Eddy ::)), opening up the nearby fire hydrant and having a 'water day' (not very original don't judge ;D) during the summers. Damn looking back, I was a ass crazy kid.

Schools were much more lax before Columbine. I can even remember kids bringing weapons to school to show off to their buddies and stuff and not even getting suspended or anything. A kid also brought some cigarettes to school during 7th grade and didn't get suspended

Can't do prank phone calls anymore - at least not without getting caught.
(I surmise the incidence of obscene phone calls is probably down from the old days, too. Spoken from a one time victim of such...)

Don't know about the 90's, but hitchhiking isn't wise anymore, unless you're desperate. :P

Yes, Columbine was during the last month of 6th grade. And when people say everything changed, there not exaggerating. We didn't even go to school on the last day because a rumor was started that our school was going to get shot and my mom was too worried.

In the early 2000s, I'd watch softcore porn on Cinemax when no one else was awake.

You know I think 1-800 partylines were around that time too.

IMO hitchhiking didn't really make it to the 90's - I'd say hitchhikers were very rare by the mid 80's...

I sort of "asked" because you talked about 7th grade (for you, this would be the 1999-2000 school year) and about a guy smoking there.

My dad hitchhiked from California to New York back in the 70s. When he came back my grandparents didn't even realize he was gone because they didn't care about him.

Watch Beavis and Butt-Head without any adults turning the channel. And Ren and Stimpy. Those shows were my childhood.
Prank calling too, my neighbor Elizabeth (who I hung around with alot so that's why she's in a lot of my stories of the past) prank called the pizza place claiming to be "a midaged man from Germany" and proceeded to do the classic fridge gag. It was hilarious. :D
