Subject: New Years - 31st December, 1999 to the year 2000

Written By: temaichi on 08/10/17 at 3:56 pm

I was born in 2000 so i have no clue how it was to celebrate a millenium. How was it celebrating the year 2000? Was it like any other year or was this one clearly special for you guys? Did it feel weird to  go up in a number like that? What were your thoughts at the time and what were you doing in the 31st of December, 1999? I would love to know!  :)

I couldn't tell you, considering that I was only 9.5 months old at the time. :P I wish I could remember it.

One weird thing is that it gave an opportunity to wear those ridiculous glasses.

It was exciting and felt so futuristic! I was 12 1/2 years old. I had a shirt that said "01-01-00". I remember how special that time felt. I remember I couldn't wait until I could write 2000 on my school papers! However if I only knew back then what was to come over the next 17 years, I wouldn't have been anywhere near as excited to enter the new millennium.

Many IT people and others spent that time working feverishly to insure that  computer systems of companies, corporations, the government, etc  kept running the way they were supposed to, due to the feared "Y2K Scare" or "Millennium Bug". It was widely feared that computer systems at the time could not comprehend the digits "00" (possibly interpreting it as 1900 rather than 2000, as most  software at the time represented years with the final two digits only) and that many disasters would ensue, causing worldwide catastrophe. Most of these fears proved to be groundless however, as, except for a few minor glitches here and there, the world went on as usual on January 1, 2000.

Indeed. I'll quote something I posted recently on a similar thread:

My husband was the head of an IT department at a small company, and he felt pressed into service on NYE 1999.  It was looking like an all-nighter for him.  (He and his team had been working feverishly for months to take care of the company's computer programs before D-Day.)  Thus I was alone on that evening.  I do however recall seeing fireworks in Australia on the TV that day - and feeling a sense of relief.  I called him after midnight - the world didn't melt down then, and neither did his company's computers.

There were some little glitches afterward, to be sure.  Just nothing catastrophic, as far as I know.  Here's an example of a funny little glitch (look at the date):

I was eight years old. If I remember correctly, I didn't do anything too special that year. My little cousin came over and we banged pots and pans in the front yard, and I think we made some crafts, too. I don't think I understood the significance of that new year, and if I did, I don't remember my feelings toward it.

Keep scrolling for more interesting stories.  :D

It didn't feel futuristic; it still had that late 90's feel. Euphoric and inflated!

I was almost 7. I was at my cousin's house and having fun there. I was very aware that it was special: in 1999 I had a strong obsession with calendars, I had one in every room of the house. ;D I was really excited to turn my 2000 calendar from December '99 to January 2000!  :D

I was 5 months and 18 days old on December 31st, 1999. According to my mother, we were at a little family get together and I was in a baby walker and I was watching the TV. At some point, she said that I started "singing" and everyone was shocked but also happy that I was singing ;D.

It was a fun and exciting time for many. I was just a measly baby though :P.

Interesting that we used nearly identical language though I had not seen your earlier post on the other thread!  :o

But that whole Y2K scare is what I think of when I think of that particular New Year's. As well as the fact that no one could seem to decide if 2000 or 2001 was the true millennium and arguments raged on in the media.

New Years Eve 1999 was certainly exciting, but I didn't really get to have a good time because I was so worried that planes were gonna start crashing and crap like that on January 1, 2000. Yeah, I totally bought all of the apocalyptic Y2K stuff back then, but you can't blame me too much, though, since I was just a 12 year old kid.

2012 was supposedly another year that all kinds of apocalyptic things were supposed to happen because it was the supposed end of the Mayan calendar. I remember reading about that Mayan calendar business as far back as the 70s when "Chariots of The Gods" and the like were all the rage. I find that stuff fascinating if somewhat pseudo-scientific. As the time got closer it started to get more and more coverage, including a bad disaster movie called "2012" in 2009. Well, 2012 came and went and the world still wags.

I remember watching the ball drop at Time Square, and how excited we all were! I kept asking myself how we would write out the date and didn't realize it was the same as before. The last two numbers of the year.

Of course... it is always conventional to write the numeric date with the last two digits of the year, regardless of what century it is. 01/01/00

However, sometimes I include the first two digits (representing the century) for clarity.

I remember watching Angry Beavers, CatDog, and SpongeBob that night. The latter brought me this:

and I was shaken for a few hours afterwards.

The only other thing I remember aside from that is Jennifer Lopez's "Waiting for Tonight" and my mom bouncing me on her lap when 2000 arrived.
