Subject: Worst Songs of the 1990s?
Written By: #Infinity on 12/08/16 at 12:29 am
Oftentimes, we discuss how great the 90s were for music or which songs from that decade we loved the most. How about your least favorite 90s songs, the ones that are at least almost as terrible as the more recent ones that drove you to a nostalgia board in the first place?
For this, I'm going to do a top 10 countdown; feel free to lay out your choices however you want.

Gotta love this classic.

It's like "Thong Song," only even dumber, due to a lousily executed Spanish theme.

Somehow a song performed by what sounds like a male Cher impersonator made it to #1 in 1991. RuPaul's "Supermodel (You Better Work)" is no less campy than this, but that works for what it is thanks to its sauciness. This is just painfully schmaltzy singing over a generic house beat.

That voice. :-6.

To be clear, I don't think MC Hammer is all that bad – in fact, I love "2 Legit 2 Quit" – and it's not the video that spoils this track for me. It's just the fact that it's one of the most repetitive new-jack swing/hip hop songs from an artist who clearly was not fit for adapting to mid-90s-style hip hop.

This is just as melodically formulaic as all of the other soulless r&b slow jams that came out in the late 90s, but here, even the lyrics fall flat, especially during the obnoxious chorus. It's a shame how steeply Whitney Houston fell in such a short amount of time.

Believe it or not, Master P and his No Limit Soldiers had their share of really legitimate hip hop tracks that candidly sketched life in the Dirty South ghetto. This is just shouting and has a particularly annoying chorus hook. Try "Mr. Ice Cream Man" and "I Miss My Homies" instead.

Truly a poor man's equivalent to Nate Dogg. This guy's voice is so feeble and the lyrics so pathetic, it's hard to believe this was a top 10 hit around the same time that Snoop Doggy Dogg's "Who Am I (What's My Name)" was making it big. Singing and gangsta rapping aren't an easy combination to pull off, but at least Nate's voice was rugged, slick, and in-tune, unlike this karaoke disaster.

I'm nothing close to a stoner, but I decided to purchase Pot U.S.A.'s self-titled debut after "Lump" and "Peaches" became sort of guilty pleasures of mine and saw that it ranked decently on Best Ever Albums. As soon as this first track turned on, I was certain I really didn't know what I was getting myself into and probably wasted most of the money I used to complete it on iTunes. "Lump" and "Peaches" are great not just because they juggle possible metaphors under such a twee facade, they're also legitimately great compositions. "Kitty," on the other hand, feels like it was simply designed to annoy the crap out of you. I can only stomach so many "mows" in a row without any real direction to guide them.

Not only is this piece of rubbish monotonous, unmusical, crass, and cheaply produced, it's hurt even more by the fact that the singer later came out as a lesbian, which makes her sound like just as much of a filthy liar here as Lesley Gore did in her songs (good as those were...).
Honorable Mention:

Okay, I don't actually truly dislike this song, but it still deserves some special mention here for being one of the absolute biggest clusterf**ks in popular music history. No matter how many times I listen to this monstrosity or how much I think about it, I'll simply never be able to process it. The whole "Justified Ancients of Mu Mu" hubbub that KLF was known for was already crazy enough; I know it has something to do with the Illuminati or something, but it's still so bizarre that not even an awkward little kid (like I was at the turn of the millennium) could make up such a trippy image. But my god, as if that wasn't enough, on this song, they also brought in a country singer from the 60s and 70s to spell out their name over production that haphazardly mixes house, new-jack swing, and hip hop with actual country-esque riffs, and the result is basically several different universes creeping in on the same song. In many cases, fusing several influences into one is a sign of artistic genius, but this here is clearly trying to be a pop song despite making "I Am the Walrus'" lyrics sound like a kindergarten lecture. It's such an awesome train wreck of a creation that it frankly holds a special place in the history of music, much as Steps' "5,6,7,8" is so great because it's so obnoxious.

I absolutely hate this song. 1999 was a pretty ordinary year for Top-40 music in general, but this is the worst out of a bad bunch, in my opinion.
There would be other 90s songs which I dislike as well, however the three songs I listed are the songs I dislike the most (from the decade).

Any mock rap songs of the 90s were mediocre.

Yes, but it's also several years old. You shouldn't have to backtrack and scan down several forum pages just to spark a generic conversation about the 90s each time. Be glad it's not decadeology or generationology.

That's actually kinda funny because I still like Sugar Ray, though I'm more of a "Someday" type of guy than "Every Morning", but still. Maybe it's just the middle school nostalgia talking? ;D
Anyways, I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned this gem yet. Not only is this one of the worst songs of the '90s, it's arguably one of the worst songs in the history of recorded music. 8-P

Sad thing is some of these songs are FAR better than anything in 2016.

Even though they're all overrated, except for Barbie Girl.

Personally, I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to "Someday", but it's definitely more likable than "Every Morning", in my opinion. I can understand though why you would feel nostalgic for both songs. I feel the same way when I listen to certain songs from 2003-2008, even though I generally dislike most of them. :P

I get what you mean. I have sort of a weird relationship with Y2K era music in general. Objectively, I know that most of the mainstream music from that period sucked, but I still have a certain attachment it. "She's So High" by Tal Bachman is a great example of this. It's an indisputably horrible one-hit-wonder from 1999 that is almost universally reviled these days, but I still find myself listening to it sometimes for nostalgic purposes.
I wonder if late '70s babies feel the same way about cheesy late '80s/early '90s acts like NKOTB, Vanilla Ice and Color Me Badd? ;D

I totally agree with the first two. Mambo #5 was awful and it's still played on the radio way too much. And Barbie Girl...it's in a class of bad all it's own...a '90s version of Rebecca Black's Friday.
The Sugar Ray song wasn't bad, it was just way overplayed and by the end of 1999 I was pretty sick of it.

I thought Color Me Badd was kind of cheesy.
