Subject: Name something you miss from the 90's

Written By: preston181 on 07/29/16 at 6:55 pm

Name something you miss from the 90's. Could be something that no longer exists today, something obsolete, a specific genre of music, a celebrity that is no longer with us, things along those lines.

For me, it's the joy of renting a video game and reading the instruction manual on the way home. Kind of a trifecta there. Video game rental chains are mostly gone. Games these days don't have manuals or basically just have a warranty and safety warning about seizures. And lastly, finding a physical game nowadays usually requires you buy it. Most games are digital.

Well, there are some Blockbusters in the United States. However, it's not like people care about going to them anymore. If Netflix, Hulu, or any other streaming service didn't exist, then people would still rent stuff from rental stores.

Yes! Electronica isn't near as good now. House is my favorite of all the Dance genres.

Music period was way better back then. Half of my music on my phone is 90's music, and the rest is music that sounds like 90's music or instrumental. I just can't get with what is popular for today's music. It's all either high pitched people shouting "hey" every other word, or crappy auto tuned rap pop.

Not being spoiled thanks to social media, whether it's a movie review, breaking news story, or leakage. I especially miss opening a newspaper worthwhile, since even in the late '90s, information was only updated sporadically. That's the primary contribution to the paranoia of the 21st century, thanks to information spreading so fast, that it gives you the notion that tragedy could happen just seconds later. People made better eye contact, knew how to make a good smile, and were more consistently honest.

Musicwise, I miss real singers that didn't have to rely on autotune the most, along with the proper control of buying music physically. If Napster was blocked, we wouldn't have the mess of shelling out $150 just for seeing a typical band in concert thanks to the redistribution of fees into rampant prices for live gigs. February 3, 1999 (not 1959) was the day the music died. This was the week Britney Spears hit number one with her first single, beginning the chasm of poor "idols" that focus too much on social media, around the time Cher's "Believe" rapidly moved up the charts popularizing the autotune trend, and although it didn't come out until that fall, it was the year Napster was released and file sharing was already starting to become popular online through some earlier websites.

I really don't think they've been very big. I don't see talk about them rarely and haven't in past years.

I haven't paid much attention to WE in recent years really. But I don't think Vince, Stephanie and HHH have had real competition with their company since WCW was still on with Thunder and Nitro. And EW had always seemed unpopular til they took over it.

Ok, a few more things missed from the 90's to get back on topic:

1. The Arch Deluxe sandwich from McDonald's. I loved it. Sadly, it didn't sell very well, and they got rid of it. I've heard rumor of it still being available by request at some McDonald's restaurants in Japan. Haven't had one in the US since late 1999.

2. Being a teenager with very little responsibility. I don't always miss this, I do enjoy the freedom of being an adult, but when I do miss it, it's almost like longing to visit a place you can never return to.

3. The joy of playing Goldeneye 64 with friends.

4. The whole industrial/Matrix-style atmosphere of the late 90's. Nine Inch Nails was in its heyday, the Matrix and the style of fashion that came with it was popular.

The company went out of bussiness in 2011, not 2013. I remember in 11' when all the Blockbuster stores  closed down and the company shut down.

Edit: It may actually be different in Canada and U.S. You're right in the U.S. there were some in 2013. Here in Canada all of them were gone in 2011.

I remember going to Blockbuster to rent games for the SNES and N64. I kind of skipped over the GameCube. By the time I got an Xbox 360, they were on their way out. Hollywood Video and Movie Gallery followed suit a little later. All that remains, at least for the chain stores in my area, is Family Video. They're decent for their "rent one, get one" deals, but even now, it's mostly digital rentals.

I did, however, go really old school this last weekend. Saw Suicide Squad and Jason Bourne at a drive in movie theater.

I miss going to my local video store and renting VHS's for days :D
I miss MTV playing videos late into the night.
I miss playing Sim City 2000 and Sim Tower like it was my job.
Must see TV on NBC (Seinfeld, Frasier and 3rd Rock from the Sun)
People being much nicer in movie theaters than today by a long shot
Looking through a paper card catalog at the library
Cable TV being worth the bill.
Pre-9/11 airports and air travel

It actually kinda sucks that I never really got to see NBC's biggest hits in the 90s, since I was born in 1999.  :(

Everything. Unfortunately, because I only experienced 9.5 months of the 90s, I missed out on the decade for what it was. Even though I grew up with 90s music and I had a very 90s influenced childhood, I never got to experience the vibe of the 90s or the hype surrounding Y2K. In many ways, I feel as though I should have been born a few years earlier.

You should've been born in the early 90s to get the full 90s experience. Being born between 1994-1996 just means that you'll have a little bit of 90s in your life, but not that much compared to the 2000s. Sure, you would be an very late 90s/early-mid 2000s kid, but you would stick more into the 2000s.

Videos must have been cheap to rent too!

The PC games I had
The kidmania fads (ex. Pokémon)
SMCs being huge
All the crazy food/snacks
The hip-hop and R&B definitely

And everything else Eric and Machine said.

Some of those snacks they still have. Gushers was hugely popular back in the 90's. As was Doritos 3D, Fruit by the Foot, Dunkaroos, and Bubble Tape. Can't forget drinks like Squeeze It and Mondo either!

Kidmania fads for me was the Turtles and Power Rangers. The Pogs game was around the time Power Rangers was big and I collected several of them with images of those characters.

I've rented games from Blockbuster a time or two, usually it was over school breaks to have something to do. I never had Game Cube either. A blessing if you ask me. When I got an Xbox 360 it was already out for 3 years. Our video stores were Blockbuster, Movie Gallery, and Eye On Video. Family Video is the only one there now too. They have some reasonable deals, but if I really have the urge to see a movie I can just buy a cheap one used or dig through Wal-Mart's bin.

The thing you said about the longing to visit a place you can never return to. There's alot I don't miss about the past, but what I do miss is kind of hard to explain. It's the feeling that even simple things in life had some excitement and memorable quality to them. I never feel this way anymore about doing things, no matter if they're new experiences or not.

The Matrix was a big deal in the 90's! Everything was decorated Matrix themed, like 7-11 cups and there were T-sheeshs and web graphics in black and green. Even a Mt. Dew flavor inspired by the film. Futuristic sci fi stuff was in at the time in general. Kind of like how superhero related things dominate current times.

The way music sounded. I miss Dance music from the 90s, sounded different than today's.

Yes, the music was awesome.  I'm not a fan of today's music because it follows the commercial formula to the letter and makes for a drone-bee type of music culture in my opinion.

I miss everything! Good thing MTV Classic is coming. Now for a 90's movie channel

I watched it a couple of times and caught a rerun of the second Road Rules and The Real World London.  I used to like watching Road Rules, I miss Road Rules.  I miss TRL.

I miss when the mom & pop video stores were still around. Those were the best places to get vhs tapes.

Me too.  We rented games and tapes from a mom & pop place until they closed down and then we went to Blockbuster.

I miss Crystal Pepsi.

Me too.

I remember traveling once in the 90's.  We did not have to show up four hours before the flight.  Bags were run through the x-ray (sorry, I don't know what it's called) machine back then and that was about it, no taking off your shoes, etc.  We were allowed to bring shampoo, liquid soap, dry skin cream in their original full sized bottles in the 90's.

Quite curious on if a 1999 born remembers the early 2000s and the late 1990s leftovers that were still around. By as late as 2003 the years such as 1998 or 1999 were still somewhat relevant as they were only 4-5 years apart in terms of pop culture which isn't all that big of a gap. I'm so most mid 1990s born can remember the leftovers (they were kids in the early 2000s afterall), but I'm wondering what it was like for those born at the end of the decade.

As to speak directly to the topic the things that I miss are mainly just the upbeat/optimistic vibe and bright colorful tone of everything.

Oldies stations that played 50s/60s music
Nick at Nite that played old TV Shows from the 50s-70s
The ability to see classic singers/bands like Frank Sinatra
Movies that still had real meaning and story without special effects and when you still had real "stars" like Julia Roberts, Meg Ryan, Robert Redford, Tom Cruise, and Robin Williams
My grandmother still alive
Ballads (especially by these female "divas") dominant on Top 40 radio, especially to get through the colder months
The "who knows where video games are going next" attitude with much more innovative games despite weaker graphics
Not being distracted by social media and mobile phone requests while watching something
Fewer on-screen displays/monitors wherever you travel (even my local church, bank and office floor has them now!)
Shopping being a much more worthwhile experience without all of the "codes", online exclusives, and false advertising of sales, although I do like today's grocery stores better than the ones in the 90s

Well, as a kid born in the "late" part of a decade myself, I can somewhat answer this. I can certainly remember quite a few '80s "leftovers" from the early '90s. I was a huge TMNT fan back then, I loved Ducktales, and Teddy Ruxpin was perhaps my favorite toy as a preschooler. I also watched a lot of syndicated '80s sitcoms back then, like Family Ties, Growing Pains and Who's the Boss?.

I think it's reasonable to assume that most late '90s babies can probably remember at least some "'90s things" that lingered into the early '00s.

I miss:
My 3 cats Lucky (1980-1993), Myrtle (1976-1996) and Mona (5 June 1982 - 12 June 1992).
'Secret' chocolate bars (briefly popular in Britain).
The good health I enjoyed then (I now have sarcoidosis and hypothyroidism).
Britain not being so Draconian.
Being under 50.

I definitely do NOT miss the music!

The chat rooms were awesome! I miss when malls had good stores and were not like ghost malls. I was never that much into malls or any kind of shopping actually, aside from the CD stores. But still it's sad to see places go. Like Circuit City and Borders. Blockbuster is a big one for me though as I would go there as a kid on Fridays and we would then get Pizza Hut. And they had those little white stands to hold the pizza down. This is something that is very much still needed. But I would use those as Barbie chairs. lmao

I agree that it's sad to see stores close down.  I never imagined that malls would become ghost malls.  Our local mall was pretty empty for a few years, but then a new company bought it and they were able to revive it.
