I think it was early 90s fashion, since that was when the show aired.

African American fashion was a little slower out of the "Bush 41 Era." Those eraser tops were still popular well into the decade.

The end of 1999 when "The New Class" aired its final episode. Granted, you would probably had gotten laughs though since there would have been people that said "Whoa, that weird throwback is still on the air?" I was in preschool when the franchise started and was in high school when it ended, and the atmosphere had certainly changed. People often forget all of the clones there were in the mid-to late '90s as part of the TNBC lineup that just don't get the love that most of the children's and even adult shows receive.

Though if you mean the original class and the question, probably during the fall of '93 when The College Years and The New Class showed that the trends had changed. Still, you can't deny what the style was by 1997:

Both yes and no. Those early '90s clothes had actually gone out of style by the Spring of 1993. TV shows typically finish filming their seasons in either February or March, so they finished right before the mid '90s fashions came in.

Maybe 1993-1994 school year.
