Subject: Did 1978 die for 1990's sins?
Written By: 90s Guy on 02/21/16 at 12:37 pm
We've all heard from enlightened minds that 1978 and 1990 were no different. That the rest of the 70s, and the whole of the 80s, existed just to get us to 1990 in terms of pop culture. Was 1978 a martyred year, a year that ended to pay for the pop cultural sins of 1990?

Here are some iconic albums that represent the spirit of '90 in all its glory:
Iron Maiden's shining moment! A classic that their 1980 self-titled debut, The Number of the Beast, Piece of Mind, Powerslave, and Seventh Son of a Seventh Son were all building up to:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/00/Iron_Maiden_-_No_Prayer_For_The_Dying.jpg
No, it's not "Hungry Like the Wolf," "New Moon on Monday," "Save a Prayer," "Girls on Film," or even "Notorious" that people remembered about Duran Duran, it was their 1990 studio album! If it wasn't for this release, we wouldn't have the Thank You covers album five years later.
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/13/Duran_Duran_Liberty.jpg
Run-DMC may have popularized rap for a broader audience in 1986, but that was only so that they could release this in 1990:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/f2/Backfromhellrundmc.jpg
He first became popular in 1979, got recognized as more than a one-hit wonder in 1983, and sold millions of copies of Purple Rain in 1984 and 1985. However, Prince Nelson's success during the 1980s was still leading to this album, nothing more, nothing less:

Everybody loves 48 HRS, right? It's a classic Eddie Murphy film! Great humor, good storyline... Well, forget about that one. The success of the first movie was only put in place by Jesus so we could get to 1990. Proof? Look:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/0/00/Another_forty_eight_hours.jpg/220px-Another_forty_eight_hours.jpg
Molly Ringwald, what an actor! I had the hugest crush on her when I was younger. You may think of her as an "80's star" but movies like Sixteen Candles, Pretty in Pink and The Breakfast club were only leading up to this masterpiece of 1990:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/05/Betsy's_Wedding.jpg
In 1990, everyone thought Molly Ringwald would be the star of the 90's. No surprise the Sixteen Candles VHS was released in 1992.

So 1978, a year defined with disco, ABBA, Queen, the late 70s Yankees dynasty, Diff'rent Strokes, early Billy Joel, John Carpenter's Halloween, and the presidency of Jimmy f*cking Carter is somehow related to 1990. May I just remind you that 70s pop culture died in 1981, with the death of disco and the aforementioned things? It was almost 10 years after 1981 passed in 1990. Nobody gave one single f*ck about 1978 being related to '90 back then. NOBODY!
That is all.
EDIT: Sorry about my rant. I thought you were TheEarly90sGuy. Obviously, I don't think 1978 led up to 1990's pop culture.

Aren't you aware, Howard? You may know about the 80's. You know, hi-top sneakers, hair metal, Molly Ringwald, TMNT and the Ghost Busters. When you think of these words, do you think "80's culture"? Well, that is wrong. As you've probably heard from the Early 90's Guy, things that occurred in the 80's are actually meant for the year 1990 (90's pop cultural institutions, as he likes to call it. Most likely because he's institutionalized himself) and there really is no 80's culture. You can learn all about the 80's just by looking at 1990.
Here, read some of his journals on DeviantArt. He deleted them but lucky for us google saved the cache (HAHAHA SUCKER!)

Actually, this is true 80s culture or at least stuff that represented how strong the spirit of '78 was throughout the decade:

London Calling was only released so we could get to Cut the Crap, the best representation of the Clash. Grease 2, Halloween 5 and Super Man IV are also perfect representations of the franchises they're a part of.

Don't forget Staying Alive, which was a critical sequel to the building block that was Saturday Night Fever! It may have ruined John Travolta's career for 11 years, but the 1983 release date remains the same.

You think Smokey and the Bandit was the culmination of Burt Reynold's success? It was all leading up to this:

That groundbreaking, scary as hell AmityVille Horror? It was just leading to this:
http://alienbee.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/amityville-3.jpg
The seeds of the 19780s were being planted way back in the 60s, and came to fruition with this amazing sequel:

Here are some of the really important movies of 1990, to add to Betsy's Wedding and Rocky V, which Jordan already mentioned above:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fe/Robo2poster.png
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/64/Young_guns_ii.jpg

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b5/Predator_two.jpg
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/0/04/TCM3.jpg
As you can see, plenty of so-called "80s franchises" were all still relevant enough in 1990 to have new installments that year. You see, we're always moving forward in time, and so one thing always leads to another. ;)

What ties it together even further is the first script for Godfather III was actually written in 1978. I think TENG is a member of the CIA and he's doing all that he can, risking his life to enlighten us about what goes on behind our backs in dark shadowy rooms where men in suits discuss pop culture trends, and projects which have been in the work since 1978 to bring us to 1990 which brings us to today. You could say TENG's our very own Fox Mulder, uncovering the Byzantine plot which took us directly from 1978 to 1990 in one gigantic leap forward.

1978 was just all about getting to 1990 which was all about getting to 1999 which was all about getting to 2011 which was all about getting to 2020.
1978 was the year that defined the 80s.
1990 was the year that defined the 90s.
1999 was the year that defined the 00s.
2011 was the year that defined the 10s.
2020 will be the year that will define the 2020s.
However, there was some big alteration in the pop culture scene in 1993 and it still somehow effects us today. Nothing really has changed since then.

Thank you guys for giving me a taste of my own medicine that I apparently deserved for being such a contemptibly obnoxious person. I'm sorry for being so difficult with just about everyone on here. I did not know how to make it up to you, so I'm deleting my account.
Goodbye all, it was nice knowing you. :\'(
Wishing you all the best,
The Early 90s Guy
Dude, we were just joking with you. Albeit, I took your posts seriously, but most of us kinda liked you.

Look guy, you don't need to leave. It's just, you know be a little more tolerant of other people. Just cause you were born in 1977, that doesn't make you a higher authority on things than anyone here. You know? Just chill, and stay.

So bad that it has a 0% average on Rotten Tomatoes! But still, the release date remains the same.
I think it was about a guy who was trying to re-live his past.

(like it? I made it myself as a tribute to 1990 ;))
That was a nice tribute to 1990, but there was one small problem with it. We were wearing Generra sportswear for the last time in the year 1990. Hypercolor was first sold in January of '91. It was a very '91 thing, even though some early Yers were still wearing it all the way up to the summer of '98. It's "power" wore off by then after meeting the washing machine. ;D

There was far more incoming '00s culture in the years '93 to '98 than there was in the early '90s and I loved the early '90s for the '90s culture.

I know you're joking, but most people remember the year 1978 for the '80s culture and not the stuff that helped to make up the atmosphere of the year 1990 (like the TV show Dallas).
Here is a greeting card for someone born in '78 that is currently being sold in the UK:

Now, here is the one for 1990:

I'm glad you like it! I missed these kinds of posts from you. I don't remember anyone wearing Hypercolor in 1998, though. In my opinion, the 90's that everyone romanticizes died slowly from 1995 to 1997.
