Subject: 90's R&B

Written By: Ripley on 02/14/16 at 9:57 am

The nineties were the best decade in R&B.  There were so many great artists releasing music during this time.

In the early part of the decade, LaFace was a great label for several of them.  Babyface was a hit maker.  While he himself has great vocals, he's an amazing producer.

But in the middle of the decade things started to slow for the genre.  Towards the end of the decade though, there were so many releases at once.  98'-99' was a big time for R&B, but the vast majority of radio listeners didn't focus on it.

There were still some good songs throughout different times of the 2000's, in particular 2005 had a lot, but it just wasn't the same.  The 1990's was THE decade for the genre.

Even though I was an Alt-Rock kid myself, I always took notice of this great genre of Rhythm & Blues. I had intended to post some videos in the 90's videos threads,  but there were just so many that came to mind that I decided it needed and very much deserved it's own topic.

So I'm going to start posting these videos, in no particular order.  Not by year or by greatness.  Also, let's talk about some of our favorite artists and memories.

While I Wanna Know was released in late 1999 and very well is a 2000's song, Are You That Somebody was released in June of 1998, so it's definitely a 90's song.

I love mid-90s r&b in particular! That smooth, silky, laid-back, bouncy style is irresistible for all purposes, whether you're trying to cool down or get up and move. Additionally, neo-soul became a minor movement around 1996. Here are a few of my favorite songs of that sound from the mid-90s period:

This was a big genre for me throughout the 90s. I loved the early new jack swing stuff, which then turned into more pop rnb as the 90s progressed. Toni Braxton and Brandy were my top artists overall.

Early 90s : Karyn White, Jodeci, R Kelly, Father MC, Janet Jackson, Hi Five, Pebbles, Shanice, Jody Watley, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant

Mid-late 90s : Brandy, Toni Braxton, Destiny's Child, TLC, The Braxtons, Whitney, Brownstone, SWV

At the end of the third quarter of 1998, Destiny's Child released this song. "Get On The Bus" was made for the Why Do Fools Fall In Love? soundtrack. It was never popular in the USA and was on limited radio stations. My local Urban station played it a lot though. Timbaland's production was amazing in this like in all of his work.

I remember that one quite well.

I've been hearing it regularly on a local radio station, Oldschool 95.9 (as well as other songs posted in this thread).

At least you have Dailymotion to watch his videos.

I have noticed that some of his videos/songs are on Dailymotion, yes... but this clip that I posted the other day had been uploaded to YT four years ago, and was still there on last check.

Aaliyah had so many great songs in her short life and career.  Her voice was so beautiful and she was a fun girl.  She went from dressing hip-hop with baggy clothes to wearing sunglasses and putting her hair over her eye along with just a bra and no shirt.  And she did it in a tasteful way.  As the 90's ended she combined this style with a more glam/nightlife like style.  Wearing dressy pants and halter tops.  As well as dresses, something she wasn't known for before as she was a bit of a tom boy.  She was funky, she was cool and she was the princess of R&B.

Her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing But A Number, was released on May 24, 1994.  Much of the production was by R. Kelly.  With it were the singles, "Back & Forth", At Your Best (You Are Love)", the title track and "Down With The Clique".

Aaliyah released her second album, the majorly successful One In A Million, on August 27, 1996. While working on this she formed a great friendships with Timbaland and Missy Elliot.  The lead single "If Your Girl Only Knew".  It was followed by "Got To Give It Up" and then the title track.  Next was the release of my favorite single of hers "4 Page Letter".  Also released were "Hot Like Fire" and "The One I Gave My Heart To".

Next Aaliyah would release the hit soundtrack single, "Are You That Somebody" from Dr. Dolittle.  She had also released other soundtrack singles before, but this one is most notable.

Aaliyah made various appearances on other artist's albums.  My favorite is "Final Warning" from Ginuwine's 100% Ginuwine.

An early 90's group that had major success was P.M. Dawn. Their first hit was the #1 single, "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" in 1991. In 1992 they released the song, "I'd Die Without You" from the Boomerang soundtrack. It would later be included in their next album. Their next single and hit was "Looking Through Patient Eyes" in 1993.

Oh yes.

"Set Adrift On Memory Bliss", their first hit, of course, contained samplings of Spandau Ballet's 1983 hit "True"; I kinda liked that one.
"Looking Through Patient Eyes" sampled George Michael's "Father Figure"; this one I don't know quite as well, but I'm sure it's good.

Better lock this thread, it contains too many YouTube video links! God forbid if people actually simply reminisce on the things they either loved or hated in the 90s, as opposed to debate for the 100th time whether 1997 was a Gen-Y or Gen-Z birth year!

As long as we don't post a ton of videos in one post it's okay. I try and keep it to two myself. In that post you made that Chucky locked it wasn't because of all the video posts but because a lot were posted in that single post. I hope that doesn't sound rude I was just trying to explain what is okay and what is not. But there is not debating of any kind in this topic. It's just us posting the songs we enjoyed listening to in the 90's with some general talk about it. Trust me I don't want any XYZ arguments in here lmao Anyway, there is no reason to lock this topic :)

I'm not sure if it was ever clarified that you're not allowed to post several YouTube links in one post, but whatever the case, that type of thing has been done numerous times before, not to mention the thread was locked immediately without any advance warning. I could've just changed the links, but whatever, I guess ChuckyG is so worn out by what the rest of this board has become since the In the 80s days that locking anything even remotely questionable satisfies him at this point, even if he doesn't enforce it consistently at all.

The thing is, too many Youtube embeddings can take up a LOT of memory (and many people don't seem to realize it), which is why we've set restrictions on how many to put in one post. (That is, a rule of thumb.) Even I myself have been reluctant to put a Youtube embedding in any one post of mine as of late.

And when I quote a post that has Youtube(s) embedded in it, I always delete the Youtube(s).

In fact, we had an in-depth discussion about the issue on this thread a while back: www.inthe00s.com/index.php?topic=38754.0

I think early to mid '90s R&B had the best songs. Mid to late was not as impressive and honestly kinda soulless. After about the summer of 1995 good urban music became much spottier. That's when the early '90s influence went away, with the fast-paced tempos, swingbeat beats, and the dramatic melodies. What I love about 1989-1995 urban music was that you could dance to it. And man were the Soul Train dancers the best!
