Subject: Favorite Mariah Carey Album Of The 90's

I'm not including the compilation Number 1's or Unplugged since they were mostly old material.

I voted Daydream.

Oooohh that's a tough one. If I have to choose I'd go with which ever album had "One Sweet Day".

A very close call between Butterfly and Mariah's self-titled debut, but Butterfly has an artistic depth that few other contemporary r&b albums came even come close to.

I'm going to say "Emotions". The songs on this album are beautifully written and the music is stunning yet eerie with some tracks...I like that.
The tracks I like:
Can't let go - I will always live this song, it's so eerie and beautiful!
To be around you - perfect song
Till the end of time - another one that's eerie and keeps you guessing,
The wind - This song is so perfect my favorite one.

This is a tough one, I first got into Mariah in 2014. She is my current favorite artist.
Its a tough choice between Music Box, Daydream or Butterfly.
Right now I would say Butterfly because of its depth. I can relate to it. And its songs are one of the best I have seen in her albums. Its sad Tommy Mottola had to get in the way of widely releasing her more personal songs like Butterfly or Breakdown that would have surely have been #1 hits. Close My Eyes and Honey are also great songs. Outside is too, heck almost everyone of her songs on that album I enjoy, so I would say Butterfly.

Daydream is the one, track #3.

I went with Daydream. It's the album of hers I've played back the most. From an early age I was singing and dancing along to this. The "Fantasy" video is awesome. I watched the MTV interview where they rode the roller coaster. I remember it well. Everytime I watch it it makes me want to put on some roller blades and go for a skate. My favorite song of hers is on this, "Looking In".

Indeed, Emotions was a criminally underrated album. All of the singles were awesome, and the album tracks were just as good! She got rid of the gated drums and cheesy '80s Adult Contemporary synths, making it sound a lot more modern than her first album. I just don't get the appeal of her debut. I find all of the songs to be boring.

Honestly, her debut is anything but. It's easily the most melodically original of her works. Mariah Carey wrote most of the songs before being signed to Columbia, and only had them reviewed during production, so there's an inspired rawness to the album that her later material can't match. Daydream and Music Box are both good, but a little too mainstream and watered down, in my opinion. Self-titled, on the other hand, is full of songs with very identifiable melodic progressions, showcasing Carey's vocals to their utmost potential. "Vanishing" is probably my favorite song of her entire career; it's a straightforward piano ballad, but also the most visceral recording she's even done. "Love Takes Time" is not far behind. Honestly, the only somewhat forgettable track off of self-titled is "You Need Me," and even that is still decent thanks to its catchy beat.
I will agree with you, however, that Emotions is extremely underrated. It perfectly balances r&b/house with ballads produced to perfection (the extended intro to "Can't Let Go" reels me in every time!), capped off by two especially endearing soul tracks, one with an exquisite jazz style.

Ugh, I wish I hadn't voted for Daydream. I just listened to all of Music Box and I freaking love it!! A wonderful masterpiece. It may be a bit "mainstream" (as #Infinity put it), but I certainly don't think it's watered down! This era was when the mid '90s truly began. Dreamlover is one of my favorite songs from her. "Hero" is basically the story of my life.

I like Mariah, but no wonder she had a breakdown. She had an album every year, except 1996. But even in 1996 she released Always Be My Baby single. Oh well, at least we had a lot of gems from her in the 1990's.

I haven't heard anything from her beyond 2005 that I actually liked. The 2nd edition of The Emancipation Of Mimi was her last good album. I remember "Don't Forget About Us" was released at the very end of that year.

She also had "Forever" (a big airplay-only hit) and appeared on Babyface's "Every Time I Close My Eyes" (a hit in early 1997, but from a 1996 album).

Her 2014 album Me. I am Mariah... The Elusive Chanteuse is really good impo. I especially love the hit lead single that predates it by a full year, "#Beautiful". It's so original and unique. One of the best songs of her career as well as the 2010's. I also kind of consider it a spiritual successor of sorts to "Dreamlover."

She loves music, and you can tell. Her passion for he music knew no limit. Glad she's not a self-destructive type though.

I think I liked her debut
"Love Takes Time"
"Someday"
"Vision of Love"
"I Don't' Wanna Cry"
...all pretty much take turns getting stuck in my head.
"Can't Let Go" from Emotions might be my favorite Mariah song though.
